Very exciting.  Im not sure what they are saying about the disciplines.  I think they are implying that you can focus on one discipline or all of them but if you skillup in all disciplines you wont be as good at any of them.  Im not sure if thats a good thing.  I think the point of allowing you to switch jobs at will is to make grouping easier, so whats the point of making you take a penalty for it?

I hope that's not the case.  And I don't think it will be.

I'm assuming you are saying that because the website says this:

"Players may opt to specialize in one discipline, excelling in a single skill, or they may take a more general approach, making free use of the Armoury.  The choice is yours."

My guess is they are saying a player can excel in a single skill because they will dedicate 100% of their time to that skill thus improve it faster than someone who dedicates their time to four different disciplines.  However, I do not think that means they will cap your Archer abilities just because you want to be a crafter and harvester as well.  S-E is too smart to do something stupid like that... (I hope!!!)

Edit: However, I would not necessarily have an issue with such a system within the same discipline.  In other words, maybe a Disciple of War gets (X) amount of skill points.  They can spend all of those skill points in Archer to get the best Archer abilities or divide those skill points up among different classes within the Disciple of War category and be a Jack of all trades if they like.  Of course, if this is the case, I bet it will be interchangeable and not permanent.

I am just very confident that they are not going to limit anyone's fighting abilities just because they want to be a crafter as well.

The Disciples of War are: Archer, Lancer, Gladiator, Marauder, and Pugilist ... and thus the one thing I am not digging so far in this FFXIV experience. Why not just name them Ranger, Dragoon, Paladin, Warrior, and Monk .. ya know base it on the mythos that the previous games have created and FFXI was built upon (although I know later tactics games used these job names). Even though a Pugilist would probably play the same as a Monk it just wouldn't feel right. While it is okay to break tradition and try new things there are some deep rooted aspects that shouldn't be played with. I don't think I could play as a  "Sorcerer " over a "Black Mage" and still feel like I'm playing a Final Fantasy.

[edit :and just to point out ... the Lancer is dressed like a Red Mage and is waring an eye patch (arh?) ]

Heh I'm having a hard time excepting Pugilist to.  If they didn't want to use Monk they could have use Black Belt.

Ya pugilist seems funny.  To me pugilist means strictly boxer, not monk.   But the picture shows hand weapons.  Maybe error from translator?

Yeah! That would have been cool! A nice homage to the original.

I'm not a fan of Pugilist either.

It's not Monk or Black Belt for a reason. In japanese it translates to "hand-to-hand user" which is basically a Pugilist. The players can't simply put the class into one category like they could do to Monk. That's what SE's aim is. While the class uses hand to hand weapons, it doesn't mean it will work like Monk did in XI. Same goes for Gladiator (in Japanese "sword user") and Lancer ("lance user") for example.

Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

How would calling it Black Belt be putting it in one category any more than calling it Pugilist?

Personally, I think Pugilist is a bad name.  A bad translation.  Technically, it means someone who fights with fists.

I guess we will see... if he throws a single kick in the game then he, technically, would not be a pugilist.  I guess I just felt Black Belt would be a better name not just because of its roots to FF1 but because it would make sense for a class that uses hand to hand only as well as hand to hand plus kicks, etc.

Look, I 'm not one of these guys who is trying to get S-E to change the name at this point, just stating there could have been better choices.  Obviously that is all personal preference and maybe some people like Pugilist (although it doesn't really look like it).

I agree it shouldn't be called Monk, though, since they seem to be avoiding the class names from FFXI (alhough I will certainly miss the age-old black mage and white mage titles...)
