The Plane of Knowledge isn't Everquest

Billius8Billius8 Member Posts: 574
Everquest was Freeport, Qeynos, Kelethin, Fironia Vie, and boat rides and druid teleports.  It wasn't this POK crap that's ruined the game for the past two years.  Glad EQ2 is coming out.  Sony killed EQLive for me.

OH, and by the way, the music for the past two years sucked as well.  Nothing will replace the feeling you got from the earlier music.

Violent retching and a sudden urge to reach for the volume control? The music in EQ always sucked, that was the first thing I turned off after install, it was awful. Midi music is the worst kind.

I do agree with you about the whole Plane of Knowledge thing - having ports so available like that just destroyed the feeling of being in a massive world, because there was no, "Start at Kelethin, go to docks, take boat to Freeport, cross the Karanas to reach Qeynos.", anymore, it was.. "Kelethin, Port up to PoK, Qeynos.". No feeling of vastness at all.

I think the whole game got sort of dumbed down when PoK came along, and a lot of interaction quickly vanished. No druid/wizard ports needed anymore, no need to ask for a rez because a guild cleric could get to your position in under 2 minutes, the only thing that people seemed to be 'begging' for was KEI.

Sad way for the game to go.

Dude i couldnt agree with you more. (except the music lol ) but i think the down fall started with the bazaar. the game is no longer about the community or questing its all about the bazaar. i remember the great feeling i got when i completed my very first quest befor even kunark came out..(bloodforge hammer with my shammy) now days why even bother when you can buy something 100 times betterfor 2pp in the bazzy? i think the bazzar was the start of eq's downfall and pop finished it off.

Was truly a sad day when PoP was released! But have to agree with the above post Luclin was the begining of the end of old EQ. The bazaar distroyed the comunity and helped some and ruined others cash flow. Turned EQ into the afk selling world it is now. I wish the damn bazaar was never made/fixed sure I have bought stuff and it did drop prices, but game compleatly changed. You no longer have the haggling or talking to sellers I truly miss that. The when board at nite find some CougarClaw earings for cheep to sell the next day for 2x profit. Or you favoret Tradeskiller was out of a item he would have it for you the next day. As for EQ2 I dont think that will give you what you hope it will Billius8, you have to rember the game you fell in love with in EQ was killed by the same people who made EQ2. Look to Vangard if you want that old feal back or to a diff company then $oE.

I agree completely!  PoK was made to appeal to the "every-man" player, as opposed to the hard-core types.  For those of you opposed to using PoK because it "destroys the vastness of the game".  I have a solution for you: DON'T USE IT!  You can still travel through the zones on your own if you want, but for myself, I don't have the time to be spending 30-40 mins running through one zone to the other.  No one is forcing you to use it, but Sony gives you the option of using it, isn't that what a good MMORPG offers you?  Choices?  EQ2 does it, Asheron's Call does it, Dark Age of Camelot does it and even World of Warcraft does it!  (feel free to disagree with me about this).  Meeting people can also be done in any other number of ways, groups, LDON's, raids, guilds, real life meet and greets, etc.

The same thing with the bazaar.  I've used it many many times to sell off unneeded items.  I've also done the quests if I chose to.  If you're opposed to the bazaar, simply DON'T USE IT!  You can sell off your items on your own.  The bazaar and PoK can be safely ignored if you chose to.

Sony is by no means forcing you to accept both PoK and the bazaar.  They are not holding your kids hostage at knifepoint, making you use PoK and the bazaar.  If you disagree with using them, but still do, that's not Sony's fault.  They offered them in a beta test and apparently it was popular (so the myth goes) and they implemented it.  An analogy can be made with smoking cigarettes, if you don't like them don't use them!  The point of this post is:  If you don't like what is offered then DON'T USE IT!

Just as a final thought, if World of Warcraft put in a PoK-like zone and a bazaar-like zone, would you be as opposed to it as you are with EQ?

Hardly comparable. So you don't use it. Just how authentic and exciting is it going to be when you know everyone else is still flitting around in an MMO. The whole point of an MMO is interaction. I can only speak for myself on this but I can say that if I did choose to ignore the Plain of Knowledge and Luclin I would gain very little out of my choice of harder travels and such still. Firstly, you can CHOOSE not to use bazaar, goodluck finding someone at the commons still selling the old way. Or even answering auction requests for an item, he is gonna tell ya just go to his trader, I guarentee it. As for the travel, ok, so you decide to rough it because thats what you like, which I do. What about the OTHER people that are in the group, so now I am morale officer as well? I don't think so. It changes the entire scope of it. Wether you chose to use it or not it still effects you in many ways. And for those that did enjoy the older aspects of EQ, part of that is lost, regardless of what their current choice of playstyle is. They still want to be with their friends and guildmates. I could just see me telling my guild that I am gonna be late because I am running from qeynos to the wizard spires to get up to to luclin so I can catch the spires there to wherever before I can make it for the event.

I am sorry, but the just don't use it does not wash with me. Its abit more complex then that.

It is more complex than that, as you have described.  If you are so vehemently opposed to PoK and the bazaar, there are consequences you'll have to live with.  If you choose not to use those features, then, yes you'll slow down the enjoyment for those others involved.  The majority of players (at least on my server) enjoy using PoK and the bazaar, ifyou don't that's not thier issue, it's yours.

For those who prefer to rough it, form a guild that only does that, and avoids PoK and the bazaar.  EQ has been around for a while and you're sure to find "old-timers" who will appreciate how things were in the old days.  Face it, progess and new things aren't for everyone.

why didn't you just say "deal with it" and save yourself some typing, because thats what your telling me. And now your just trying to pawn me off, coining me as vehemently opposed to it. I never complained about it, I merely retorted your comment on don't use it. I gave you argument points on how I felt your concept doesn't work. I never once stated that I in any way have major problems with it. So now you have personally addressed me about it instead of addressing my points. And then tried suggesting I am an old timer that is against "progress".

A lot of people feel Everquest was better pre-PoP, myself included, but then all the talent left after Luclin to form Vanguard.

It feels like the folks left in SOE just dont have a clue anymore.

Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS)
Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve

Boat rides and travel was the bane of EQ, come on. Its good they came out with PoK, but bad they came out with expansions that have focused solely on the uber guilds.

You were right about EQ2 not being what I expected.  Guess I will have to wait for Vanguard.

i played EQ 3yrs, started about a while after Junark come out, and i loved it. The boat thing was a pain to travel but exciting in someway. You actually had zones that some levels could not reach. i played a wizard and i was so happy to finally reach the level to use my first portal. "now i could really make some money" i thought to myself. Velious came out and added a whole new world for me to explore--i love exploring and discovering rare locations. After luchlin came out the zones i used to grind in from the orginal and expansions up to velious started to drastically dcrop in population. Planes of Power pretty much emptied whole zones of the orginal came and turned once populated towns into ghost towns. I no longer had a source of income with the teleports because PoP took that advantage away furthing my disirability in groups. I really wished that they had stopped at velious with the expansions and just added to what they have. Sorry for the long post just miss the game but cant find any reason to go back and everytime i feel the urge i just rember where i will end up, equipment monster; not satisfied until i have the best of the best. i know EQ has always been about the equipment but at least you had other content filling for the lack there of.

I actually feel kunark was the good work that was put out, verrant was still trying then and it was very well done. Velious, even though they added some amount of content to the game I thought was handled very shoddy and not done well. I actually prefered the game before Velious came out.
