General: AGDC: Making the Grade Guild Panel Video

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

One of the best panels at Austin GDC this year was the Guild panel. Chris Mancil of Trion Networks moderated five of the top player guilds on stage and gave them an open forum to discuss MMOs.

John (Deyth) Shkolnik (Guild Master, The Combine), Dan (Bonedancer) Moore (Guild Master, Sinister), Rick (K’dahbruh) Fields (Guild Master, Shadowclan), Robert (Hades) Hiett (Guild Master, Lords of the Dead) all spoke about their likes and dislikes of MMO game play. Some games take a beating in this panel, but the pure thoughts of the player shine through.

If you missed the panel here is your chance to listen to open player feedback at a developer conference. Many of these guilds are hardcore and PvP focused. Still they give voice to the MMO community as a whole. The panel is definitely worth a listen, especially if you are a game developer.

View the panel here.

Thanks for the mention.  We had a great time attending AGDC and were very grateful to Chris Mancil and Trion World Network for making it happen.  It was certainly a first but hopefully more of the same will happen for other guilds and other game companies at future conferences.  We have a valid and useful viewpoint which we're only too happy to share.

Is this a joke?  These massive guilds do not represent MMO players in the slightest!

What a laugh, the opinions of these 5 people are just chaff in the wind and about as important.

What's with the unnecessary hate?  We don't represent everyone but we do represent a segment.

I agree with Ozmodan because although I don't think the organisers were looking for a panel that was representative of the MMO community these people certainly aren't.

Anyway why didn't they ask for my opinion look:

I'm the king of Roundhall, but it takes effort to be taken seriously, look at the link above; I'm the king of Roundhall.

Oh now you have to have other people involved, well that's just adding extras.

No single panel can represent the entire MMO community...or did you mean no panel could possibly qualify unless you and/or Ozmodan are on it?

First  of all, although there's some confusion because this could be an U.S. American site, you joined this site twenty second of May 2009 or twenty second of September 2005 and I was born 22/05/1978.  Secondly what if the entire community was respresented on a very large panel?  Your second statement would be wrong; and thirdly what I said was that I'm the King of Roundhall.

If you want to know why these contrived gatherings give rise to resentment I'll tell you, and I will because that's what I think you're asking, people who organise these rings that give rise to insecurities in the community, paticularly younger players who are aware they will not succeed unless they're part of a guild, are like kiddy snatchers.  They've stolen the innocence from games so that they never need to accept that their gaming time is over, over...over.  No longer will childern plays games because the covers look good and enjoy them without sight of death, un-death and slaughter, play them without expectation and find some unique sense of empowerment within them.  What they might gain is contrived and statistised, and that is determined by adult gamers who find power in games.  This sort of thing, guilds that is that take funding from players or charge fees, that exist outside of games to uber max destroy all releases, incorporate the worst aspects of gamer nature and exploit their members by using those aspects to motivate them by placing them under obligation and by rewarding sacrifice.

I don't think it's realistically possible to represent the entire community on a panel and more than few people make for a very inefficient panel.  It would be boring and no one would really have time to talk.

I understand why people hate or resent, and I also know why little children cry, but I would hope at some point people will grow up.  There are many ways to play MMO's and hopefully there will be enough MMO's to cover all those playstyles.  What we want is for the makers of these games to know that almost every audience will have an experienced pool of players they can tap into before the design is set in stone.

I think it was a positive step for the guild and player community that gaming companies wanted to hear from us in the first place.  For this panel the AGDC organizers specifically asked for "Legacy Guilds" that had been around 10+ years with a track record of success in games.

We've pretty much seen it all, we've played a lot of games, and we have a lot of insight from an organized perspective.

That isn't to say that we know it all or represent everyone, but we heard a lot of positive feedback about our panel.  Perhaps we helped to pave the way for the industry to want to hear from their customers a little more frequently, and open the doors for others to have this type of opportunity in the future.
