-People's professions were deleted.  They played the game, and enjoyed it, because of those professions.
-People enjoyed the skill system.  It was deleted.
-People enjoyed finding, taming, raising and training pets.  This was deleted, and non-existant for about 2 years.  Then it was eventually replaced by an apparent WoW rip-off, beast-master system.
-People spent months or years, literally, unlocking and completing a jedi character with mutiple skill boxes to choose from and mix and match.  SOE deleted all of this.
-Crafters spent a lot of time and energy building up businesses that were an integral part of the ingame economy.  This was replaced or watered down first by superior loot drops and then by the Sony online store.  Crafters who lost much of their business, lost their joy for the game.  Crafting now plays a much less significant role in the game with all the loot drops and trading card game loot items.
-People enjoyed the combat system with all of the numerous professions, skills, animations and real-time strategy.  This was erased and replaced by a psuedo fps combat system.  Entire combat classes were wiped out of the game.  Those who enjoyed a range of skills and animations lost these.
-People had built up massive ingame communities, guilds, cities, and when all of the above (and much more) was taken away from them, they lost their communities, guilds, cities, and now many will lose their servers.
You say that people who claim the game was ruined for them are blind and out of touch with reality?  You compare them to delusional, religious zealots?
I think I've listed far too much reality that has led thousands to walk away from this MMO with a very bad feeling.   This is an abbreviated list btw.
I respectfully disagree with your premise.  I think there is ample evidence to suggest that people have a long list of very legitimate reasons for leaving and not returning to SWG.
P.S. Just because people don't agree with your point of view, doesn't make them religious zealots or grumpy old men who are stuck in the past.  (You seem to have an interesting way of trying to invalidate anyone who doesn't agree with you.)  They simply may not have liked what was done to their MMO, and they may not like what it has become.  They also may not like the way SOE seems to treat their players, and they may continue to talk about it as long as they like.

Nicely put and it reminded me of some elements of the game that in fact were a joy and as you said some things not mentioned I hardly ever hear mention of the actual bait and switch (the half truths about how long Jedi was unlockable in game and the mysteries about what we had to do to unlock it).  It was good to read a comment that for once really did make me think back in a positive way about the good things that Galaxies once had because I have for quite some time been of the mind that it wasnt all that good to begin with which still holds true but again some of the things of the game as you mentioned were very unique and much fun.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

The OP clearly is trying to peddle some SOE love drugs on us, because it would take some serious drugs for me to even consider coming back and playing that POS iteration that SOE tried to shove down our throats.   Personally this is one game I wish would just die and go away for good.   To the OP - please take your game and go play it and stop peddling your BS on these boards.

The game is destroyed.. I belived that myself. Untill I returned and actually gave the game a chance and I  love it.
And belive me, I was as hardcore PRE  SWG  as you can get. It took me more than 3 years to get over it.. and I  am glad I  waited that long.. becuase they have fixed lots of things.
Also reading SWG  forums.. proves that people are happy. Lots of returning people on their forums saying that they really like the game now. To be honest. all this SWG  bashing is just silly. Many of you people sound like old frustrated men that cant move on from the past. Why all this anger towards the game ?

I will just counter your theories with a few short comments.

    • Do you really want to point to the official forums as proof of happy players?  Seriously you should reconsider that or at least read a few posts there.  Almost no one has faith in the soe team to do anything right.
    • People of a forum can't stop a great game from attracting people.  If it is as good as you claim, then people who do try it and find out that the "anger" is ill informed would stick around and play the game.

I just want to say this again.  If the game was so great, more people would play it.  SWG would sell itself to anyone who played the trial and nothing former players say could stop that.  There are millions of new mmo players who have no idea what the NGE is or what happened.  If the game was so great, more people would play it.

Oddly enough this seems to be the mantra of soe players these days "Why don't more people play swg/eq2/vanguard...."  and the excuses range anywhere from lack of advertising to blaming former players for not singing the praises of games run by a company that treats people like shit.

I'm sorry more people don't play swg, eq2, planetside, mxo, vanguard or any other soe title.  Angry players are the result of the situation, not the cause.  Look elsewhere for the failures of swg or whatever other soe game the next soe fan tries to start yet another grass roots "lets save this dying game since soe isn't doing anything to save it".

I think you are incorrect when you state the hate can never change.  Honestly I think a lot of people would love nothing more than to see some drastic changes at soe so they get back into the business of making games and not what they are currently doing.  There are some very serious problems with soe and the amount of people who are no longer customers only reinforces that.

I would personally love to see the leadership at soe get fired and replaced by people passionate about making games.   I would be tickled pink if that happened and they put a real effort behind something like vanguard.

Yeah, despite all the craziness, one thing that keeps me talking about this game is that it was an unforgettable experience in the early days.  Living in the StarWars universe with hundreds of thousands of other fans was pretty mind-blowing.  The communities we built, the early GCW, discovering things for the first time right out of the movies etc. were all amazing.

Some of the early content was also really fun.  I loved the corvette missions, all three variations.  Finding the passkey to enter the missions was cool, talking to the various contacts to get the mission was cool, doing the missions was cool, finding the contacts to pick up the various rewards was cool.  The missions for Nym were also fun, and his hideout was excellent.  I also enjoyed Jabba's palace.

Speaking of that, compare some of that early content to the post NGE legacy quest.  Uggh.  If that doesn't tell you the game has gone steeply downhill, I don't know what will.  I played SWG post-NGE twice, despite all the negative feedback to do just what the O.P. suggests: see for myself.

What I saw was a boring, rushed, buggy, repetative legacy quest, missing professions, missing skills, missing animations, missing crafters, lost levels, unrealisticly fast movement, a crappy UI compared to what we had, empty ghost towns, and very, very few people.  Was this a positive MMO experience?  Hell no.

Since then SOE has introduced the TCG and its "buy a pack of cards for a random chance at SWG loot" campaign, flying ewoks, and zombies.

No, no, I think I'll pass on that.  I'm very content to reflect on fun times I had with some excellent people that remain good friends of mine.  If SOE is rebuilt from the top down and rediscovers a passion for great games and basic respect for gamers, I'd take another look at them for sure, but I haven't seen that yet.  I keep looking for it, but I'm still waiting.

I wonder when you had a look at those forums last? I read them every day and the general atmosphere is better than any forum in any game that I  have played. The amount of trolls and negative minded posters are less than I have experienced in any MMO that I have played recently. Community WAS  and IS  better in SWG  than most games. People are actually helpful and if you ask a question on SWG  boards.. you will instantly get 2-3 answers. And no silly L2P like most other games.

A few threads from general SWG  forum (about the last patch):

    * I Have To Hand It To The Devs...*thumbs up*

    http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/posts/list.m?topic_id=1008945

"On the new content that you released yesterday. It was fun, challenging, rewarding, and most of all, it made me want to leave work early and sit down in front of my computer for 14 hours to beat it and get that crystal, which I did!"

    * My friend and I would like to say: (what a great update devs!)

    http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/posts/list.m?topic_id=1008975

And just a little post about PVP  from a galaxy forum.. there are lots of them all around galaxy forums. I  am not interested in PVP myself, but its interesting to play a game where people actually talk in positive words about pvp and have fun. I think this could have lots to do with the server merges that have helped the population and made things  a lot better on the current servers. Lots of people = more fun :)

    * Great PVP Last night

    http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/posts/list.m?topic_id=1007345

"Nice to see the Imperials pulling out numbers when necessary. Great fighting everyone."

The amount of  "angry teenagers", forum trolls, and "not playing any MMOS  just complinging about them" players are a minority on those boards. People are commenting bugs, talking about things they wish would be there, but in a constructive way and they do it because a game they like, they want to see it even better.

People on the forums are busy playing their game. They buy and trade ingame items. They post pictures of their decorated houses (amazing), they recruit players for their guilds, they laugh and talk.

    AND  SERIOUSLY ?

What other games have community and events like this ?

I am sure you can dig up a few negative post, but any person with a bit of social intelligence will notice that the atmosphere is good at SWG game play discussion and SWG  galaxies forums.

And it impressed me that you can respec as often as you want, and that the game never forget your level so that when you have leveled a crafter a combat and a entertainer, you can respec between all of those classes without having to grind again!  :)

+ Entertainers have more than just one buff now. They are actually fun to play. (Combat entertainer is amazing, that is if you spend expertise points in combat).

    lots and lots of things.

I  higly  recommend everyone that played SWG  before and loved it to reset their minds a little bit. Log back into your characters on one of the remaining serves and give it a chance. It will not cost you more than renting 2 movies and you get hours of fun back and I  am  SURE.. that quite a few of you will be staying and thanking Blueshadow for giving you that advice :)

Seriously.. just try it. I am sure that a high number of Vets that have not played it since NGE  was launched and left it in anger and frustration and are bitter would see that things are not as bad as they are fooled to think. Get out of that negative spiral and instead of reading this forum and listen to other negative thinking persons go and make up your mind for real!

And if you don't bother about this game at all.. why even read the SWG forums?

It was like that, 4 years ago after NGE. Today.. all theese years later. Those that hate SWG so much as some people claim here are not having an active SWG  account and play nor post at those forums.

What I  am saying.. is not that everyone loves every pixel of it. But what I  am saying is that there are actually a really good atmosphere both at forums and in the game. And its really refreshing to be in such an environment after having played various MMORPGS for the last 4 years where I  am surrounded by "angry teenagers" and "WTF!!1!!" comments all the time.

And you know what.. While I  am typing this on my laptop. My character has been dancing (using afk macro) in her house (something I  always liked about swg, that you can legaly make neat macros in certain situations).. and I  heard a sound from a speeder outside and saw another character run to my vendor building, buying an item that I  had offered at the trade boards.

Bleep I  got a mail that I  had sold it from my vendor. and I  invited that person into my house in the game. And we are now chatting :)  what other MMORPG has such a complex social environment?

People have to pay for an account to post on those forums.

Do you really think that after all these years from NGE, that will  pay for a game if they felt so bad about again as some suggests here at these forums?

So I  do not belive that people that pay for playing SWG hate it so much.. they simply would not pay for it then. Its just logical. Those that hate it so much.. they post here on this forum :P

I've reactivated my account a couple of times since the NGE, mostly to see if anything had changed back for the better. Nothing changed though, its still the same piece of crap it's been since they butchered it. I am certain many Vets have reactivated a time or two themselves and like me I am sure they posted their appraisal on the SOE forums only to have them deleted. Not deleted for inappropriate language or anything like that, simply because of the term pre-NGE was included in our posts.

We didn't pay to play post-NGE, we payed to re-evaluate the game itself. And as paying customers we posted our findings and the jackboots stomped down on us. But of course, I'm sure you'll try to spin that into something positive regarding the game. It's not as if anyone here already thinks you're on the SOE dime to round people up to play their abomination.

I am not going to post more in this tread now as I  feel that the blind hate it too strong. But I  will end by saying that no matter what people feel about SWG. Just look at every feature of that game today and compare it with other  games currently on the marked and tell me witch other games that have all these features and that can compare.

I am saying positive things.. you negative.

I  just have to ask, because I  am curious.

What is the point of using so much energy to just have to point out how bad and crap yout think this game is? And to try to make fools out of people who actually enjoy it.

I mean, if you love something then its natural that you talk about it. But if you hate it. Why use energy on it at all? I just don't get it. There must be a huge load of frustration over something.

Is so bad if someone actually enjoy the game? Its almost like we are insulting someone.  And is it so bad that we just want to tell on a SWG forum that we really enjoy the game. Why do we always have to be swamped by negativity from someone.. lots that havent actually played it for years or at all?

I don't have a problem with the fact that thousands of players today enjoy the game as it is now, in fact I envy them. I wish I hadn't had the game I loved torn away and butchered into a WoW clone because money mattered more to them than what they had created to begin with.

You talk of the thousands that play it today. I post for the 350,000 that were betrayed and left the game as victims of SOE's blind greed and close-minded pursuit of the fatter wallet.

I still post with such venom because there was never any closure on this issue. SOE never admitted to any of the blatant and transparent wrongs they did to the SWG community, were never the least bit apologetic or remorseful (publicly) and to this day still stubbornly refuse to admit that the Combat Upgrade and New Game Experience were flat out the wrong direction to take the game in. Yes, hindsight is 20-20 but it's not as if they weren't told this would happen. We in the focus group they asked screamed it at them.

Many wonder why we can't just let it go and move on. We have long since moved on. We just cannot abide those that tout the company's PR garbage in front of us any more than we could abide someone defending the actions of a child molester.

Wrong is wrong and we don't put up with it.

People of a forum can't stop a great game from attracting people.  If it is as good as you claim, then people who do try it and find out that the "anger" is ill informed would stick around and play the game.

    * Great PVP Last night

    http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/posts/list.m?topic_id=1007345

What other games have community and events like this ?

    http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/posts/list.m?topic_id=997827

+ Look at the effort players are making to welcome other players to their servers:

Starsider  Welcome pack (from Starsider Galaxy forum).

    http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/posts/list.m?topic_id=525709

Cherry picking a few positive posts from the GPD forum and server forums is hardly proof of a good forum atmosphere. The O-board has proven time and time again that it is a poorly moderated cesspool of anger and hostility. The antagonism there isn't just reserved for the occasional disappointed vet that gets repeatedly flamed by the usual trolls that do so with impunity, but the venom displayed between the current players is mind boggling. They really do eat their own over there. There have been countless links, quotes and references to how toxic the GPD O-board is made here, not to mention the posts that do get deleted or locked there.

In all fairness I will admit the server forums seem much less caustic. Some players bend over backwards to help their own communities and post positive topics/responses without the usual GPD garbage.

I am always amazed how some players come here and complain about vets and their 'blind hatred' for SWG and/or all things $OE when they ought to take a good look at their own backyard. Nothing beats the rancor there.

God I want this game to die so, so much! People keep talking about how the game has improved from the place it was right after the CU. "Oh, just give it another go. It's really quite good now!" I don't care if SWG is the craptastic game of the century now because you know what? No is not what we were promised THEN. It is not what the game was created AS, it is what the game has BECOME. And this game has become a shining beacon of disdain in my heart. Pretty strong words? You betch’ya!

I could give my drug abusing, alcoholic brother a second chance. Why? Because he is family and I expect him to change.

I could give the t.v. show “24” a second chance. Why? Because it costs me nothing.

I could give a politician another chance. Why? Because I expect them to break promises.

But I cannot and I will not give SWG another chance. It is not family, it will charge me a monthly fee and although game developers can and do break promises, they should NOT scrap a game which is fun and working well for a poor attempt at a money cow. It is shameful.

This. If he really thinks that the O-board is all about helping and togetherness, he is living in the Matrix. I go there everyday and the anger, hate and shit talking to people is astounding. And don't be a player on the profession boards asking for advice on something. You'll get flamed all to hell for not using the guides or the search feature. Your assessment is spot on, Kazara.

Amen, sums pretty much my feelings too.

    And for the OP:

SWG is not the second, it is the best product in the market for deceiving its player base, whit half baked updates that enable exploits(*cough*GU12*cough*), RMT that requires a player a decent amount of patience or money to gamble, content that does not resemble Starwars(*cough* Zombies*cough*).

I mean who doesn't want to play Galaxies...

Oh yeah, welcome back Wildcat84, guess now whit Shayde and you here the vet forums are back on track.

    and yes not to yield.

    Exactly what this person said.

Well I really start thinking you are right.. :/

But I  was one of those vets. And I  went back and I just enjoy the game now for what it is. And what it is.. IS  more sandbox than anything else. I wish there were more options on sandbox marked.. but there is not.

So untill that game comes.. and its probably not.  I am happy I  went back.

Why even reply to him if you aren't interested? Just admit it, you wanna play that BS game deep down inside xD Just go play it, and like it for once, all the other vets seem to.

Was this an attempt at irony?

Ah yes, anyone who doesn't subscribe to the "SWG is teh devil" theory is an SOE employee.

haha, so true. I don't think we'll see a preNGE or preCU swg ever again. For people that played it because it's star wars, will flock to TOR. The people who loved SWG's leveling system, player controlled economy, space combat, and so forth, are out of luck. Pray to the MMO gods a company comes along  that followed what SWG did right, and builds off it.

Played - M59, EQOA, EQ, EQ2, PS, SWG[Favorite], DAoC, UO, RS, MXO, CoH/CoV, TR, FFXI, FoM, WoW, Eve, Rift, SWTOR, TSW.
    Playing - PS2, AoW, GW2

While I appreciate your viewpoint and maybe it's true that the game has become amazing...

I still wouldn't give it another try

2 years ago, if they made a pre-nge server I would have come back...

    Now I won't.

The big reason for me is Vanguard

Why you ask should Vanguard make me not want to play SWG?

Very simple SOE screwed me when they stealthed in the NGE and I swore I would never ever play another SOE game.

I buckle for VG, even though I was pretty sure SOE would buy it out, because it looked like a good game.

VG became a game I now also loath because SOE handled it wrong (not all their fault as the game wasn't in a good place when they got it).

SOE doesn't listen to player concerns

SOE is just in it for the cash (all buisinesses like cash but SOE whores itself out)

So even if they released a SWG Perfect Version (tm) which is Pre-CU/NGE (don't really care as I was a crafter) with all fthe bugs gone and a lot of new fun content I would not play.

Because SOE as a company has proven itself on multiple occasions that they will eventually find a way to screw me.

Also SWG will probably, even though SOE denies it, die shortly after SWTOR comes out.

So sorry for the negativity and the SOE hate

But at this point SOE can't really do anything to make me want to play ANY of their games.

Second best SWG to pre-NGE, huh?  Unfortunately a non-contextual comparison like that doesn't actually convey that the game is good.  All it conveys is that in your opinion, the current ver. of the game is the least worst since NGE.

If Star Wars Galaxies taught us anything, it is that nerd rage has a very long half-life.

Then The Old Republic will launch and these same people will scream for it not being pre-NGE SWG, even though the developers never said it would be.

    QFE

I agree with the OP - the game has changed into something worth a sub - I wouldnt rate it up as high as he does but sure its not half bad - its not half good either.

All the haters - alot of them are also cool kids who think its "cool" to flame and attack SOE - it was years ago people - let it go - SOE are a business plain and simple - your being conned out of your cash by companies you currently play just in a different way.

The SOE that made that all time classic mistake are not the same bunch anymore - half of em got the boot - and the ones that are still around are doing nothing more than simply trying to make games and run a business.

On swg all it takes is one minor mishap - ie server down for 5 mins extra and the nerd rage fires up and they drag this issue back into the spotlight - yes it was bad but like Hamarni - I grew up.

They simply tread on eggshells around their community now and if theres ever a time to go back to any of SOE games then its now - they have to compete in the bigger market and they have to keep everyone happy.

For me SWG is still a bit too buggy and all about collecting nowdays for my liking but as the OP says "its got a bit of its charm back" and is worth a look see.

Hate it or not - its not doing too bad.

Im not picking on you directly Darkbladed as your post had a constructed point of view but this line Ive left is alot of peoples gospel according to SOE

And if you look on SOE Mission statement point 5a - "Find various ways to screw customers, after all we dont need em!"

See the sense in that statement you made?

That REALLY worries me. As much as I loved the potential SWG had, I have no expectations of ToR. If anything, I expect it to be little more than another KotoR style game...Mass Effect style, Mass Effect 2 style...Bioware has a track record of making games I almost liked but hated because of the continual dialog and slow gameplay.

Going in with LOW expectations is probably advisable.
