I for one am seriously hoping they design a robust crafting system. What better way to get players living in true heroic fashion then to allow them to custom design their own equipment. Be renown for the finest arms "modifiers".
Everyone needs a more stable rifle, a sturdier pistol, and killer boots.
But most of all i want my initials on those bad boys

im looking forward to a great crafting system also, and hopefully a housing system too, i want a penthouse on every planet......
Something pretty neat about the Bounty Hunter description if you guys havn't noticed.
This very well could just be a "description" and nothing more, but I kidna feel it has more meaning.
"Preparation is the Bounty Hunter’s best defense, and cutting-edge protective gear is standard equipment for most Bounty Hunters. Artisans spend months and even years hand-crafting the Bounty Hunters’ heavy armor to ensure it offers superior resistance to all manner of weaponry, and that each suit will still allow maximum flexibility and versatility. Offense is just as critical as defense, however, and powerful weaponry is necessary for any Bounty Hunter who might have to shoot his way out of a messy situation. It’s not unheard of for a Bounty Hunter to spend as many credits on an advanced blaster as others might spend to purchase an entire starship."
This makes me speculate a few things, player bounties are possibility considering "The hunt" will require lots and lots of fire power. Spending more credits on a weapon could mean they were obtained via Auction and/or Crafters. Also, "Entire Starships" leads me to believe Ships will be purchasable with the same method, and this highers the speculation on the possibility of space.
That description also says that "Artisans spend months and even years hand-crafting the Bounty Hunters’ heavy armor". If Bioware is aiming at the WoW crowd then I dont really see them giving much to crafters. They will most likely have a token system in place like WoW that allows everyone to buy raid quality gear without actually raiding or crafting.

Nice didn't see that one either I'll highlight that to.
I actually don't think BioWare is aiming for any specific crowd. Based on a few articles I think they are aiming for anybody and everybody, no matter the play style. I'm not sure how you see the token system, but that system is there for people that do group, that will run dungeons. Crafter's in WoW can make some of the BiS gear, some of the belts are amazing. They are also an option for the solo players, credits (or in WoWs case gold) for gear.
judging from the games it was derived from, you could stand at your work bench and make a lightsaber, or upgrade armour or weapons, so if there was this type of crafting in the rpg, youd like to think/hope there would be an extension of this in the mmorpg.
Depending on whether crafting will be a rich and rewarding system will play a significant part in keeping the community engrossed in the game.
I for one believe that crafting is an integral component of an MMO and depending on how sophisticated the system is can lend to a more integrated community.
At the end of the day or this game. What matters most how many different way interaction between players can occur. I am very excited about the amount of effort being put into the story of the gameplay, but it also scares me a bit because it might be too much of a focus point.
Bioware can only give us SO much story. Once the story ends (End Game content) what is left for the player?
This is an mmo and at the end of the day human interaction will be one of the key factors in this game being a hit or fail.

I just hope its a good one and not "hit one button and *poof* you're done".
I have a feeling that crafting will be minimal. Bioware want your characters to be heroic and I'm pretty sure they'll see nothing heroic about making armor.
I think Crafting in SWtoR is important. I remember Going all ofer hell and back to find the best gems in Kotor II.
Expanding on that could lead to a nice crafting community.
Yea on the tor website, I am pretty sure they said, either it wont have a true crafting system at start or it will be minimal. Hope they do put one in tho since I find crafting one of my most enjoyable things especially when I played SWG.
I think it should be incredibly indepth... or nonexistant. I don't know anyone who craves simple crafting. People either don't care about it, or they want to have tons of depth, unlimited options.
Let those who want to craft have tons of fun with it, making stuff for the rest of us who couldn't care less
Economy and crafting are both devices that can make a pattern grow in mmorpg's. When it's right. A shame to waste it.
Who knows what they will do though. They've said the game is loot based, crafting wont interfere with your feeling heroic (what?), and it will have an economy like WOW. Maybe something like legendary items in lotro, or reverse engineering in swg? Both pretty damn cool. But I prefer the real thing, as deep and complex as you can get. Thats just me though, right? Making them large mini-games could also make them playable through different devices for fee's if they're thinking about the future in terms of growth rather than retention. In depth mini games are good like that. Possiblities to make shitloads of extra money too in many different ways without disrupting the main game (and feeling heroic) Relying on Marketing is a waste after a certain point from what Ive seen.
Hope for something good is all we can do.
All opinion, all wrong more than likely.
See you in the dream..
The Fires from heaven, now as cold as ice. A rapid ascension tolls a heavy price.
I've often wondered why there hasn't been an attempt to having crafting (and other aspects of an MMO) have varying depth. In crafting, for example, why isn't there are just a button somewhere that says "Make X" ... but if you WANT to go to a crafting station and start up a craft, you can. Have the "Make" command create a product that is like a 75% or 80% of what the maximum a "serious" crafter can make. So, if the possible range for a crafting session is 80-100, then "make it" would generate a 95. That's pretty darn good and would be worth it ... BUT ... that elusive 98 or 99 is still out there. The key would be to make the 95 great, the 97 noticeably better and the 99 AWESOME.
Personally, I think they should do that in all things MMO. Don't care? Click on "Level as Bounty Hunter" and you'll be 95% effective in 100% of the situations. But what if you REALLY despise the jedi, why can't you click on "Advanced Leveling" and delve right down into specific stats that, with tweaking, learning and understanding, you become 100% effective in 5% of the situations (jedi in this case) and 90% effective in 95% of the situations.
More complex? Of course. But designed that way from the ground up, then players could choose when they wanted the game to become more complex ... if ever. And you could WoW it up to max level or bury yourself in spreadsheets ala EVE.
everyone should be pushing for a fully player driven economy that is driven by crafters and not by loot
Loot drives subscriptions though ... and unfortunately, the publishers have figured that out.
Loot that becomes raw materials for crafters to create the base of the player driven economy is what everyone should root for.
I wouldn't mind having both actually.
I hope it is in some ways similar to SWG.... the crafting in that game was fun.
