I've been looking on the game's website and all I see are stuff about "power set" (whatever that is) and how the game is not boring and requires a brain (?). I'm coming from WoW and I'm looking for something a little more interesting and less time-consuming. I saw a youtube video on the gameplay and it looks pretty fun, but I'm really only interested in three things. Does this game have:
. instances/dungeons? (like 5-mans in wow; not raids)
. a crafting system? (if so how does it compare to wow's?)
. fun pvp? (is it instanced or are there villains for world pvp?)
I think wow pvp is very fun for reference - especially arena and gank-fests on a rogue
Thanks in advance for the help!

Power sets are groups of powers that have a similiar attack type like munitions. All the abilities are primarily gun related. You can jump around in any power set you want but you have to be careful stretching yourself to much or with incompatible trees and depending on what you make your super stats (the main stats that determine your attack power) you can gimp yourself. So it takes some thought and you probably will restart several times (an upcoming patch will allow you to skip the tutorial zone aka first 5 levels of the game if you get atleast one character out of the zone).
If you plan to play make sure you read all the help dialogs that the tutorial zone and trainer npc's have (you'll see a trainer at the end of the tutorial zone in the Crisis zone). They'll explain alot to you about stats, perks, etc etc. Also take note that the game is an instanced zone game like Everquest 2, if a zone gets to full of players a new one opens up and you can swap to it. The zone change screen will tell you if you have friends etc in that area so you can easily meet up with people.
You won't see any 5 man dungeons until around lvl 25 the game is fairly soloable through out but by grouping you get more xp, more loot, and a bigger aggro range making it rather crazy. Its somewhat of a contention at the moment that there's not enough group content but depending on how you build your character the game may require more people with you at times where others can easily solo it. There's not a very bid if at all dungeon focus for the time being, that being said they plan on adding an additional 10 levels to the game so its end game is essentially unfinished. Right now its alot of dailies etc etc. THe game is ment for altaholics more than raid / game aholics.
The crafting system is entirely different from WoW's atleast in useability. You can make some nice gear and break down gear for parts etc but really its not a huge focus of the game, you won't make money by crafting. Of course the game does not have much of an economic focus at all at this time ...really makes no sense for everyone to be Tony Stark. Really the only reason to craft is if you ra weapons user since crafting will open up more looks for your weapons that you can access at the costume tailor and at lvl 40 more costume peices in general. You can also make custom stat items which are pretty damn nice (however not as nice as the Purples you can save up for through the Nemesis and Unity token systems at end game).
PvP is basically just some instances for Heros to test themselves against other heros..but honestly unless your in a premade group or you forgo character concept for a pvp concept..your going to get burned alot. Its really not worth the aggrevation most of the time, though the Apocalypse maps towards end game are more entertaining since they're atleast objective based compared to kill based.
There is no world open pvp. It makes no sense to have it seeing as everyone is the good guy (you can Duel of course). There is of course a halloween even that will feature world pvp. A fight between hunters and werewolves (you can choose sides or get bitten as a hunter and die and change sides). It makes more sense since in a comic book sense its a limited special event. If they ever introduce a Villian Side that players can take they probably will have some open pvp somewhere.
The game is really casual, they've been erfing and beefing it up to make it still casual friendly but more group friendly. They've been introducing more solo content the last couple of patches so its only a matter of time before we see more group content.
Basically when it comes right down to it...this game is very very very very very far from a WoW type game. Other than quests and being pve based (primarily) it has nothing in common with it. Its a classless system that lets you design everything right down to your character's shoes and gear while its important to have isn't Set based carrot on a stick run like WoW (one of the things I hate most about WoW).
wow that's a lot of really good info lol. Thanks! I think I might be checking this out then sometime next month.
If you can find a life time member that has keys left (they gave out buddy keys to life time member ships) you should try it around the end of the month during the Halloween event. Try before you buy if you can because its pretty subjective on if you'll like it or not. Some hate it some love it, some expected more from it *shrug*
Yeah there is no world pvp and the arenas CO have ------ yeah the pvp is in a bad state right now. You can be fighting a guy and then poof, he teleports away. So you'll find yourself picking up Holds and such so you can prevent escape. However theres lots of broken powers right now.
I just came from a match where someone exploited this broken STC (shallowtail cut). I managed to avoid dying to this guy but many people screamed at this guy that he was cheap. The community is full of guys like this ofc that will use these broken powers all the time.
It's fun sometimes I admit but really incomplete.
Doesn't look like the devs will ever add good world pvp or open zones. And when you go to arenas just same faces over and over.
I think Pvp is gonna be really small like it was in CoH and devs will just focus on PVE.
Crafting, meh..... Not gonna comment haha
Just as a note...do not buy this game. They will be offereing Free Monthly subs very soon to try it out. The way they instance their servers, you can tell how many people are playing. They couldn't even retain 1/2 the players from the first month. I'm not trolling. The game really is dying. Just don't want you to waste your money. Oh, don't buy Aion either. Save the $100. I wish I had.
Link please or this is just a lie, so stop spreading lies around.
P.S. It's not because you try to convince yourself by saying you're not trolling, that you're not trolling.
Get a life you freaking Gamer.....no no, you don't understand, I'm a Gamer, I have many lives!!

CO is NOT focused on PvP... enough said on that. If you came to this game looking for PvP, then:
Oh, and the crafting is a good system. Better than most MMORPG's out there (WoW) and actually adds some customizability too (some tier 3 (21-30) craftable enhancements can be customized with specific stats... couldn't do that with WoW... or LoTRO... or EQ2... etc...).

I don't need to do that, I have a lifetime sub and I am still playing. We started an SG at the Headstart and we are still growing. Yes some left within the first month, like in every single MMO launch, but saying more than half the player base left is just a lie. Just for exemple, the first month during prime time, there was 30-35 shards of Millenium City and now there is still 25-30 shards, but also, people are now higher lvl so they spend more time in higher zone.

I played CoH which had horrible pvp too for yrs. So I knew CO would have poor pvp.
And I was in beta so yeah, I knew what I was buying. Guess you wasnt paying attention in all those threads where I posted bout beta
Never did I imagine the game would have so many balance issues right out the gate. Game was rushed out 6 months too early.
I'm not disgruntled I already expected a poor launch cause from what I saw in beta I could tell they made no attempt to balance anything. Good thinking on their part to wait til Launch day to start. That really made a lot of people happy when their avatars were broken. Luckily I picked weak powersets for all of my chars. But I do expect them to ruin my Electric avatar sooner or later. Slowly but surely i see more and more nerfs coming down the pipe
So just enjpoying the ride til subscription runs out like a lot of others
I disagree the crafting is better than other MMOs. EVE Online in particular is superior to any other crafting system I've pretty much seen with a strong economy to boot.
CO crafting is not meant to be deep or complex. Just something interesting to d that doesnt involve the usual fair
I vastly prefer CoH method where auras were just available at the tailor personally. I do not like this gear acquisition for stuff like that. It gets in the way major for me
