Too bad too many new games force you to download BT to get their demos.

Sad that most don't offer a standard download link.

IMHO (in my humble opinion), If you are going to have BT, there needs to be a standard download link to a public site like File(less) Planet, etc.

DOH!

You misunderstood wanted to get across here.

I develop computer programs and also am an end-user of software.

Many games are downloadable from mirror sites or sites like file(less) planet. (FP)

Don't need or want another download client on my pc.

I'm not debating the "load" issues when people are going to get files from YOUR server. There will be a load on the server site based on demand for files whether or not they use BT.

Surely they could easily had their download available VIA FP etc.

    I'm not against progress.

dont you need to subscribe to fileplanet to get most of the downloads? (i honestly dont know, i tend to try and stay away from ad infested site like that). BT is pretty simple to use, doesnt seem to take up much memory and is free...the only downside i can see is that you have to concede upload bandwidth, but sharing is good, m'kay....

PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...

Internet bandwidth is very expensive. BitTorrent relieves the company from the burden.

    Pretty simple economics.

BT gives developers free download source for players. I like BT cause you can find there almost everything you want to

My only problem with BT is basically if you want a file, and nobody else does, you're stuck to either not being able to download it, or downloading it at sub-56k speeds. I mean, they could help out by having several seeds, but for the most part I've noticed that BT is SLOW compared to a regular download.

BT is awesome, i hate downloding from fileplanet 90% of the time the files were over a gig and when they were done the files didnt even work, fileplanet is stupid, ill take BT any day, its a small file, and it works damn good

On popular files from ftp & such the bandwith is drained away pretty fast & you end up getting download speeds that look like dial-up & not broadband.
With BT its the opposite, more people = more speed. (I guess you know this already)
The stress on server with BT is (only?) on the tracker & thats not a problem, bandwith is.
For less popular files there should be regular (ftp/http) download since BT is just about worthless for that.

Fileplanet I avoid as much as I can.
Right now I use one download manager for http/ftp & one BT client (BitComet), not that bad.

bt as the ONLY method is bad imo.  An ftp download should always be availabe with bt as an alternative that is there for those that want to use it.  I wouldn't mind sharing by providing upload if it didn't affect everything else I'm doing on the net and also everyone else in the house on the network.  Games become unplayable for others while uploads are going on(1.5mb connection).  Games publishers should stop being cheap and pay for their own bandwidth.

Bit Torrent is just better than nothing. You are TOO MUCH dependent of other people. BT for WoW beta was ok => many, many people trying to download it. But if you ever want to get some very exotic software, you'll find yourself with 0 sources and wont be able to download that piece of software. I would prefer slow ftp or whatever source in this case with a download manager. They should always propose an alternate way with a BT download imo.

BT will increasing become the distribution method of choice, as file sizes get bigger the bandwidth for distributing a game client will be a major obsticle to developers.  BT solves that problem. If the only option was BT then the file download would be even faster, since BT is the only fair P2P protocall I know, everyone leeching is also sharing.

I don't like fileplanet because unless you're a paying member, you have to wait forever for your place in line and then you gotta press the start download button. And I gotta DL the whole thing in one shot or else it restarts from scatch. Forget it.

At least with BT you can just DL a free client and voila. How is that worse then getting an FTP client?

As mentioned by others BT is the way of the future and having a good BT client will be as importnat as an FTP client. Someday it'll probably be standard equipment on an OS (as long as the RIAA doesn't pull some more stupid lawsuits).

I work for 2 ISPs at the moment, and thus have a nice insight into what internet bandwidth can cost you.

Take Blizzard, in example. If they would offer WoW on FTP, hardly anyone would download it using BT .
But the bandwidth consumption would be humongous. But, imagine for a second they do have this bandwidth.

In the first few days after a game release, loads of people will download it (and hey, more and more people actually get broadband so more and more people download big files.) After a while however, their bandwidth will be hardly used.
Then when they patch their game and people need to download the patch, they will have this huge bandwidth demand again, which will mostly be gone after a few days.
So, this set up is not very ideal. It will cost a lot, and you'll pay for more than you need. (and then I haven't discussed the security implications, the server hardware necessary, loadbalancing issues..)

Hosting your file with a webspace provider, in example FilePlanet, is a sollution to this problem, but a very costly one. And many people (me included) don't like FilePlanet and sites alike.

Hosting a TorrentTracker and a few seeds, you can controle your donwload quite easely, using little hardware. The bandwidth necessity is lower by a lot, and load balancing across your seeds is automatic.
The disadvantages are mainly for the users, in terms that they need to set up their firewall/network for P2P.

I think hosting a Torrent is a great idea for companies. Only I wish that Blizzard would stop using their download client and just post the .torrent file. I need to reconfigure my firewall for their client, and I can't limit the bandwidth usage on it. If they just give me the torrent link I can use my current torrent client which is already running perfectly...

Anyway, 3 hurrays for hosting Torrents instead of having overfilled FTP servers (been to CreativeLabs FTP servers for a driver lately?)

    Cheers,
    Nash

lol. I payed 180 for 3 years of fileplanet and love it.

Hmmm lots of betas....swat4 and a NUMBER of MMORPG are on fileplanet. I think the 180 is worth 3 years for all my betas and not waiting in line and getting a almost 6Mbps download rate.

If ya cant afford fileplanet well yeah it must suck. BT is ass.....id never get close to 5Mbps with that POS.
