MMO vs MMORPG

Is there any real difference between the two?

I've decided as a pretty casual gamer who has played a few games that I'd look around for another game to play. I was reading through some articles here and browsing the web, and I noticed some websites say MMO and some say MMORPG.

What's the difference?

Ya I am a casual gamer as well and usually I refer to the games I play as MMOs for short. I *think* MMO is just a short form for MMORPG but I could be wrong. I've often wondered that myself :P

This sight has 396 "MMO's" on it... of those probably 10 Honestly Deserve to have the RPG on the end.

If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude; greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.

MMO stands for Massive Multiplayer Online. This isn't limited to RPGs only.

For instance, World War 2 Online is an MMOFPS.

I suppose if that's the definition, MMO should be the generic term while MMORPG, MMOFPS, etc. are all subcategories of MMO. Sounds good, IMO. As for actual differentiation, the previous posts kinda made it pretty clear. MMO covers online rhythm games while MMORPGs strictly have to be of the RPG genre.
