i started playing Aion in CB, and found that i liked it, i preordered, and played since launch. Slowly, but certainly, some feeling of "sigh...ive done that already, so many times before, dont let this game be another flush in the toilet please" so i continued... Today, i dont log in anymore, i even found myself installing AOC and Lotro to see which of the 2 i would resub too..if any. the felling i get, and now asking if any shares is this: soo much of the same, wings/nowings flying mounts or not..it just doesnt matter anymore...it all seems like taking a deep breath and just trying.. I love gaming, really really love gaming, but im using my pc less and less for gaming, spending more time lurking here, in the vaque hope something shows up. Before Aion, i was sure a new 1-2 maybe 3 year mmo would be here...instead it gave me the feeling of this: Am i getting too old...or is the industry getting too self complacent? i dont know.. but i know i dont like the feeling of having to quit mmo´s Just my thought, Best regards, Martin Etlar oh, and on a side note..am downloading Vanguard trial...another vague hope
Let's be honest.
How many No-WoW clones MMORPG there are on the market at the moment?
Darkfall, Fallen Earth, EvE, EQ, UO, maybe few more (ES: Ryzon).
2 of them are as ancient as the dinosaurs (EQ and UO) the others are made by Indies.
Anybody else, in particular AAA developers are going for the casual WoW crowd.
Now if this is not complacency, I do not know what is...........................

It seems at some point we will hit saturation.
There will be so many WoW clones, that it will not make much economic sense to release yet one more and compete with the hundreds that already exist.
But we arent' there yet. More WoW clones to come I'm afraid.

Deffinitly know what ya mean.
My last hope is FFXIV, I might check out SW:TOR but i'm not holding my breath.
And if FFXIV lets me down I'll probably quite MMO's for awhile....

Never tried an FF game, except offcourse for the ps ones, (final fantasy 7 !!:)
best of luck in ff14 or what its called, and i hope they introduce something new..havent been following aqare for some time
Its like people listening to junk culture music, and suddently waking up bathed in sweat, realizing that there is more to this world, than mass media junk.
Dig alittle and you will find games created out of passion, and a world of new and fresh gameplay will come to you.
Users decide what games are made, not companies, they simply react to market demand.
Support those who take a chance. Fallen earth could be a good choice right now, but there are many more.. if you want soemthing more polished try EVE online. Or go back to Planetside, awsome gameplay. GL
Aion sucked me in too I even played beta and was bored but figured why not, only $60 and if nothing else add to the MMO collection. Anyway it is polished and I like the art direction but it is also on rails, very little MOB variation early on and frankly invisible walls, no floating if not moving and a death penalty is a bad combo
I've also got my eye on what the folks over at Trion World Network are going to have their hands in next, as they've worked on, shipped, and help develop some titles you may have heard of like, Heroes of Might and Magic, EverQuest, World of Warcraft, Lineage, Star Wars, LoTR, and the sims.
The artwork for Heroes of Telara reminds me of EverQuest sooo much! I definately have these folks bookmarked and check them often to see what they are up to.

Well besides the fact that there last MMO rocked.
They are not doing a standard level system, it will be based off of wepon levels like in UO.
And from everything we've seen now crafting will be a big part (like 50%) of the game.
And they've actually said that you can "level" cap in the game without fighting one bit. Which will be a first for a large dev.
anyways so yeah...there's always the chance that it will bomb, but its the only one that has my hopes up right now.
I would look into it more, there is deffinitly some cool stuff they are doing.
Wow its weird to read someone else say exactly how I feel
seems we are not alone
Ashreal ill be sure to check out Trion World Network, some of the games you mentioned are my absolute favourite lan games for the really late nighters when people are asleep, or we just had a beer or funny smoke/very rare though) the game im thinking of is ofcourse Heroes of Might & Magic
Nice to see people post their thoughts about this!
and Dewm i havent really looked into ff14, most likely because im kinda scared of getting dissappointed in yet another mmo, and its eastern (no offence,)

Makes me want to go through my little bookshelf in the spare room and find that disk and re-install Heroes of Might and Magic again. Good times!
I'll agree, its a whole lot of "more of the same" and I'm playing it very casually (like 2 days a week) Consider playing EVE, Ryzom or even Darkfall and try something really different. Should cure some of the burnout you're feeling.
QFE
would also like to add Fallen Earth too that list of games.
Playing: EVE Online Favorite MMOs: WoW, SWG Pre-cu, Lineage 2, UO, EQ, EVE online Looking forward to: Archeage, Kingdom Under Fire 2 KUF2's Official Website - http://www.kufii.com/ENG/ -
Lol, you guys are late. Today, if you want something different, its either Eve or Darkfall. If its none of that, keep playing what you played since 2005(And i talk about wow and games that play like it lol)
Somehow developers think its all about lvl grinding on easy to beat unoriginal enemies with the same AI used 15 years ago, to gain a slightly better piece of equipment.
They know how to add the carrot and string, yet forget the other aspects that make a good mmorpg.
Myself i like to be immersed into the world, get a feeling for my character, a good community where one can belong/have fun/socialise, I like to explore and discover and finaly take a stand and take on other characters alone and in groups.
Ok i admit i like playerhousing too.
Warhammer online was the last mmorpg i bought and played. That has been one dissapointment. I no longer buy new mmorpgs, unless i still hear good things from the forums months after and the playerbase is stable or growing.
That big warhammer online CE edition box staring at me reminds me to wait for something worth to play.
yeah. all MMOs are the same now I just started playing them again and it's like hey that game looks like.. that game.. and that one.. that one too?.. WTH!.. it kinda sucks. BUT they have different story lines -.-' However sandbox mmorpgs sound pretty cool (have not played one yet ]: ).. Unless Luminary counts. That is actually a very unique mmo. you should try that one. Its a grindfest but cool skill system imo.. just try it.. I think i might play it now lmao
The only way to survive the MMO blues is to stretch out your twitch reflex muscles. Back in the days when I played EQ classic, I got some "R&R" so to speak by playing Unreal Tournament... you know, the GOOD one, the first one. But you know... any FPS works so long as it's "fun" to you...
Seriously if you only play MMORPG's I think part of your desire to live slowly atrophies and dies if you let it go for too long.
"There is only one thing of which I am certain, and that's nothing is certain."
OP: I feel exactly the same. I pre ordered played Aion for 4 days and then knew I was in for hundreds of hours of boredom. Since then I have installed different trials. I played Lotro to level 7, then figured what was the point.
I think Aion burnt me out. I haven't subscribed seriously to an MMO since EQ 6 years ago and have been a very active reader of mmorpg.com ever since! Been looking for that experience...and nothing has even come close.
I think the majority of gamers not playing WoW are burnt out from the games they have played. It is definetly time for the genre to evolveinto a polished innovative fun game.
Take a break, no MMO’s for 6 months, then have a look and see what’s around. MMO’s are a time hogging, obsessive hobby, sometimes you just need a break from them.
Having been a fairly "dedicated" MMO player since UO beta I thought the same thing as the OP with Aion. As is the norm these days with the heavy hyping on new big MMO titles I was really looking forward to Aion. It didnt take long for the "I've done this all before somewhere" feeling to take over which is a shame as it started to make me wonder if my MMO days are over. I dont believe I'm done with the genre because I am playing around in FE and enjoying the change of scenery...and while it can be argued that FE is more of the same with a different wrapper there is enough in FE for me to know I still enjoy MMO's.
I think Indie titles might be the way of the future, the big companies seem to be too tightly wound in the massive money making potential of a game like WOW...its a business after all eh. My wife and I have unsubcribed to Aion which suprised me as she liked the look of Aion (I didnt), but even she who has boundless patience and understanding, cant bring herself to log in. About the only fantasy type MMO that would draw me back to that style is something along the lines of a new DAOC or a Lord of the Rings theme superimposed over something like a pre-cu SWG game mechanic. Any Indie dev's reading this?
UO beta, etc etc ---> present day. Currently in LOTRO while waiting for another DAOC to arrive!.
I'll agree, its a whole lot of "more of the same" and I'm playing it very casually (like 2 days a week) Consider playing EVE, Ryzom or even Darkfall and try something really different. Should cure some of the burnout you're feeling.
Same here, pretty much.
I definitely agree with the Ryzom recommendation. It is just what I needed. Finally a sandbox that I'm compatible with. It's the perfect cure for the "Ho-Hums".
To anyone else - if you haven't tried it, or haven't tried it lately.. Try it - give it an honest shot. Learn how to create your own custom abilities. It's gravy from there. I had tried it before, and quit after about 10 minutes. Big mistake. I wish I had given it a decent shot before. I was about to give up MMOs for a while, after playing them for almost 10 years. I don't know how long i'll be with Ryzom - quite a long time i suspect, but it sure perked me up at the very least.
And another one here... bought Aion which at least cured me from WOW making me realize how much I had fallen in a routine of jumping from dungeon to dungeon and from raid to raid, spending the time trying to learn silly steps to avoid snow falling or a lava wave... doh!
But after a while Aion 's shortcomings made me quit it too. So now I'm not playin anything.

Aion certainly is a WoW clone but it is very well polished , stable and does has bits of new content.
If a WoW type MMO doesn't hold your interest very long then Aion may be a nice MMO vacation for a a couple weeks but you wouldn't want to live there.
