New Sandbox game on the Horizon

Yes that's right. Another indie dev in Denmark going after the Sandbox dream. Except this time there is NO  NDA what so ever for beta participants, AND you get to discuss the game in irc and on the forums with the testers and the DEVS themselves. I found this game 2 days ago. So far it is quite playable state from what i gather from the current testers. Yes there are plenty of bugs etc but this is an early beta phase. NO where near a Release candidate. The devs know and understand this and from what i gather there is no rush for a release.

the devs are all open minded about different ideas the pros and cons of both. they so far are very interested in getting input from the community at large. They welcome constructive crits of this mechanic or that. So far i like it. I don't know how it'll turn out but this game has so far stood under the radar. If your interested just click my sig. Sign up on a forum acct and hop in IRC. Hope to see you there

I hope it all works out for them, but from what I saw in the 30 minutes I tried it, they are a long way from launching and the graphics and combat system already feel extremely dated.

Agree, has a VERY early EQ feel to it. It is a LONG LONG way from release.

The thing i find interesting is i dont think ive saw a game that tends to be Pay to play  with no NDA where i can be involved in every step untill i choose to stop. i find this interesting

You were thinking the same thing? There are two detergent brands here, one is called dawn, the other is called tide.

Why isn't this game in the list? Or am I blind?

Looks promising, and the devs seem to have a good attitude - which makes a BIG difference.

played: WoW / AoC / AO

Define "playable state". It's nowhere near my definition of that term. It is looking promising though. We'll see what it looks like in several months or so.

    Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN

give it a break with dawntide already, the Darkfall forums is flooded with this monster game

just give it a few years, all im saying.....

  • exestenz69exestenz69 Member Posts: 121

Playable state as in, you are able to log in do some basic combat, some basic crafting etc.

And to the other guy asking about the loot yes it is a full loot system.

Yes the game is playable, I just dont see how they plan on making any money with it. As I said before, the graphics are extremely dated, like playing EQ in 2002-2003 dated. I know graphics arent everything, but how do you lure in potential subscribers with a game that looks like something made 6 years ago? There are already a ton of games out there that look much nicer that are struggling to exist.

As far as i can tell so far. If you are an avid sandbox fan, and unhappy with whats came of the market lately. Here is a chance to have your ideas actualy heard and discussed , AND considered by the devs.

For the past week ive been following this game ive saw more dev interaction with the community and actual debate of the pros/ cons of different ideas than any other game released. Dont get me wrong t his is still an early game build right now. Itll be at least a couple of more years b4 its an actual release candidate, BUT unless they change the way theve been operating you will have a chance to imput ideas in the hole process.

By struggling you mean what? They havent hit the 1mil sub mark? Everyone said DF would sink. All reports says its still going. It still has a loyal playerbase, and is still doing well. Most forget that just a few short years ago b4 WoW a successful game was considered 100k subs.  I am not affiliated with the devs what so ever but i think if they got that many subs they would be overjoyed!!

A more realistic prediction would b 10, 20k to them maby not that much. Not every company starts with the BIG BUCK!! lookout to game development.

From what I've seen about this game, they have visions of likely unattainable grandeur.

I would urge the developers to read the history of Horizons/Istaria before they get too far ahead of themselves. You CAN take on too much and in the MMO world you can't be all things to all people.

Any western MMO hitting the million subscriber mark these days would be a huge success. I dont even know if Aion can hit those numbers and they have top notch graphics, solid game play and an extremely polished world, with one of the best MMO launches in many years.

I really hope the devs can pull it off, but I dont believe they will even sell 10k units by releasing a game that looks worse than MMOs that launched 6-7 years ago.

"what? omg no giant pretty flashy things with wings and bright lights and other useless nonsense ? RAAAAAAAAAGE!!!!"

Ok yeah sure the graphics are a bit dated, but not horrible, certainly wouldnt say theyre as bad/dated as EQ. but hell, to most fans of sandbox games, graphics are pretty low on the list of priorities anyway, and the graphics arent really what make it fun, its the freedom and overall sense of adventure and accomplishment. besides, just look at all the "omg so pretty!" highly graphical games that have come out in the past couple years.... nearly every one of them complete garbage in every way BUT the graphics. looks to be a pretty good game whenever they finish it up, will keep an eye on it

Honestly from looking at the screens and stuff I'm excited to actually play this game.

Still really rough in all aspects. But seems to have great goals set.

I've only looked at screenshots and it looks okay.

They use the same graphics engine as Oblivion and FO3. That being said, they may have the game locked on lower graphics settings in this stage in beta. It is not uncommon to force low quality graphics so that you can test the game without graphical problems. WAR, for example, did not implement the "high" or "very high" settings until launch.

As other posters have said - graphics don't make a game. Aion has phenomenal graphics. Lots of games have a good deal of eye candy ... That doesn't make them good.

    ------
Played - UO, FFXI, WAR, WoW, EVE
    Currently - Bored.

I agree to some degree.  While looking at this game it seems to be far from complete even though they have a playable demo/beta.

I haven't played the game at all yet but everything they talk about is so general you can't tell what they are actually going to do.  While Horizons had a focus they just weren't able to complete it, but that was over 5 years ago.  Doesn't mean it isn't possible.  Plus the multiple transfers of ownership of Horizons kept hurting its development.  Dawntide probably won't have that problem but you can never tell.

Make games you want to play.

This sounds so cool! I'm going to go play it right now. && as for "the graphics are bad" so? Gameplay makes a game great. If you don't think that you're not a gamer in my book. (I do have a book)

It actually looks quite nice and the goals seem very interesting (seagoing vessels!). I like seeing games that aren't all about rushing to MAX LVL and then sitting around in epic gears talking poo poo and occasionally dueling.

Looking forward to it, hopefully I won't have to wait 4-5 years.
