Just curious - why is the game losing players do you think?
I ask because;
I haven't been following the game since release
At the end of the beta I made a prediction here - that players wouldn't stay with this game because they would play it and 'finish'.
It's not a bad game (or at least it wasn't in beta) but it just played like a single player game. And games like that you tend to play... finish the plot and then leave.

Pretty much as far as I found. The game is/was fun, for about a week or two, then it felt like doing the same thing over and over again. I could make an alt, but then it really was doing the same thing again.

I quit because at around 31 I ran out of quests and had to do quests several levels above me. The final straw was getting stuck on a Nemisis mission that was bugged in multiple was so as to be more challenging to thread your way past of the bugs then actually playing the game. Add to this there are like 6+ cutscenes you can't bypass and after doing this mission like 8-9 times I was just so pissed I said forget it.
I was also disappointed with the character power development systems. Seems like at low lvl you play with a lot of different builds but ultimately you end up with a jack of all trades build almost inevitably similar to every other build.

*sigh* I had expected that. I said it in the beta SO often, that with those nerfs and the imbalance of powers ALL will have the same built in the end. Oh well... :%
Actually I must say I still saw plenty of variety in PVE. I even saw people making great use of their offensive passives. So in regards to PVE I disagree about this 'same build' stuff.
Now, the game has plenty of other issues. but lack of variety in PVE is not one of them
PVP on the other hand is broken but if you played city of heroes you already expected that. It's in PVP where the broken powers are overused like Teleport, Swallowtail cut, MR, shadow embrace + advantage, Circle of primal domination, chainsaw, etc. Theres a serious lack of creativity in PVP as one would expect since the players are just cherry picking the most effective, broken powers
But since they balance for PVE, its interesting these exact same abilities in most cases are not really that bad. Thus it creates even more tension between PVE / PVP crowd.
I still might recommend the game for people that love alts and superheroes if you got nothing else to play. But if you want to stick with just 1 hero hardcore then bypass. PVP features are bare bones in its current form and UNITY looks like a grind from what I'm hearing. I expect just the folks that ar ehooked on making alts will love the game.
for instance I ever return I'd purchase additional slots from the store so I can make more heroes. So this is why I say theres mad variety

Holy, this sounds incredibly familiar, same exact thing happened to me in Tabula Rasa, when I reached the flats zone, there were no quests left and the difference between level 30 and level 50 in Tabula Rasa was very tiny (you only gained points every 2-3 levels for upgrading your current abilities).

I would just like to point out that the game dropped to $40.
I'd say they're hurting for players if they drop the game's price in a month and a half.

Nothing says irony like spelling ideot wrong.

The game just got boring and repetitive too fast.
