Just wanted to say hi and I am new to the forums. I also wanted to say I have been playing video games since the first pong paddles were released for your tv way back in the day.
I have played several MMO's from Vanguard to Hellgate to UO to EQ and play WoW currently. After 5 year's of WoW I am fed up. I think Blizzard has lost its "mojo". I hate the way they release their games. I hate the ads on the forums. I hate the balance. I hate arena. I hate the way they treat players.
I love the warhammer universe and play the RTS. But the MMO does have some nice things (WoW stole them now) but there is just still to much wrong with WAR for me to want to stay.
I was almost settled on playing Lineage 2 but decided to check out the forums and 2 things really shocked me and stopped me from playing. On the forums on eof the Devs posted some advice for new players. 1. If you are getting griefed by a high level player then bascially to bad, try and call out for help and see if another player can come help. 2. If you get scammed then yet again oh well, your fault and nothing we can do.
Now I do enjoy a limited amount of PVP when it is somewhat balanced (lolarena) and I really enjoy PVE and I love having a solo aspect. I was thinking about maybe trying AION, Fallen Earth, LOTRO. Any suggestions would be very appreciated!

try red war edems curse man i have just started playing i a week ago and it seems fun so far. The red war tournaments r extreme pvp and the game play is fun so far. There is alot i am still learning about the game but so far i enjoy it and its free.
Go ahead and try AION but go into it with open eyes and the mindset that it will be like EverQuest before any expansions were released. Also be aware since it was initially produced overseas that the amount of Gold Sellers, and bots will make your skin crawl. Same thing with Lineage II, there they actually have bot teams, with an "enforcer" that would kill you if you killed off a bot hunting in any given area.
That being said, remember that the folks who manage Lineage II are the very same folks that are going to be managing AION. So far they are a bit more agressive against gold spammers/sellers. However, I haven't seen them do anything about the bots yet.
I really don't know what to recommend to you as I am playing both AION and EQ2 currently.
If you do find something interesting drop me a line!

If you fancy sci-fi, give Fallen Earth a try. The player rating (not the official mmorpg rating) should give you hint why.

i was thinking about trying lotro first then maybe fallen earth? my buddy is playing aion and likes it but does agree its do full of gold spammers its almost miserable to play
currently playing Atlantica Online, you can give it a try for a change of combat mechanics (its turn-based, like traditional console RPGs). first fifty or so levels are easy to go through., and its PvP is alright. most importantly tho, strategy matters, so you have fair chance against others even if you're equipment isnt too great. oh and its free to play.
i've played L2 before and i suggest you steer clear of it.although i found the graphics nice (dark elf robe wearers FTW!), but the grind really gets difficult past 50. especially so with the griefers, PKing you out of boredom and destroying a whole days worth of exp (or even a weeks worth if your near the cap). if you can find a good clan, that'll help you out greatly.
I think you may like The Chronicles of Spellborn, it has turned f2p and is a great game. That has cool combat system and awesome graphics. If you have fast download speed you should really try it and you'll lose nothing!
spellborn failed my expectations.
Right now I'm in the middle of Underlight, Knights of Dream City and trying Wizard 101.
Underlight is a great community game, Knights of Dream City is a cool, kinda dungeon-crawler style MMO and Wizard 101...well I'm sure you know what it is. I'm trying it due to the turn-based combat. Looked kinda cool and accessible for players of all ages.
Check out the MUD I'm making!
Came in to post this exact thing. Are you playing currently?
