Well i dont know about you lot but i actively play the game in the EU on the Crom server and the server is far from empty, if anyhting it is growing, numerous areas require more than one zone to accomdate the number of players. And i have chars ranging from 40 to 75, all areas from low to high have decent amount of players. "well known level 20ish quest barrier " Never ever heard of this so called "well known" quest barrier lol, maybe you are talking about when you leave Tortage, where there are 3 X times the number of quests required to lvl from 20 to 30, so i am at a complete dead loss as to why anyone would use the above phrase!!
Correction: The barrier was 30, not 20. I forgot tortage ended at 10 not 20 and that I hit 30 before bailing. Sadly, the game never really changed much at all from 20-30. But everyone knows that between 30 and 60 there were essentially no more quests. They had a beginning to the game, and an end game for the grinders, but you would be hard pressed to find anything to do but grind from around lvl24 to lvl46. I was 32 when I took off the first time, when I discovered I had to grind rhinos for the better part of forever because there was only one other quest available and it was at level 35. So yes, it was a well known quest barrier. Dredge up the launch posts if you like, I'm not doing it.
The point still remains that the world still felt linear and uninspiring even after all the patching and the quests were disappointing and a pain to manage.
Edit: Why would lack of auto attack bother me? I was a caster, and have always been a caster. Auto attack to a caster is a mere plink of 4 damage every few minutes. The skill set itself was somewhat interesting as there was a variety of pets and I play pet classes, but it became apparent pretty early on that only one or two would ever be used from the five or so you were given.
When I say it wasn't engaging I mean there was nothing pulling me into the game. Never been fond of the overly machismo lore behind conan so the setting didn't really appeal, and even after traveling to the questing areas for the two other races, they both felt very linear and dull. Not just the quests, I honestly don't expect a ton from quests, but just the areas they were in just felt very thrown together and chaotic. Combat was by the numbers and every creature you fought felt like every other creature you have ever fought be it a man or a giant elephant. The skill system I barely even bothered with except for the "must haves" because honestly, it's poorly implemented and tacked on. Tons of useless skills, and the whole thing just feels out of place.
Don't get me wrong, the plans they had for PvP ( the sieges I mean, if they ever worked properly) looked interesting, and the end game zones they added looked more lively, but I wasn't about to tredge through 50+ levels of miserable to get to them. The night time quests were a good idea though, fully enjoyed those.
Even if I made a habit of running Xfire I (as a returning customer) would shut it off to play this game because I remember it taking 3+ minutes to start up and actually get in the game, and a lot of sloppy hitching once I was actually playing. I imagine it runs better now than it did a year ago, but you can't seriously expect Xfire to mean anything with this game.
I just took them up on their 14 day offer a couple hours ago and the patcher has already crashed four times. (Make that five.) Each time this happens it warns me that the database might be corrupted and it wants to do a scan of the files even though the patcher begins work with a full scan. This is getting pretty frustrating.
Frustrating because I had hoped Gaute Godager leaving would mean good things for this game, and I've said several times that by this summer I thought it would be in pretty good shape. I feel bad for Sirillion. I wonder if he has much to work with.
Anarchy Online is in pretty good form. Lots of people, game runs smoothly, the vibe there is very positive. Last night I did a head count in Borealis and saw at least 70 people in the streets. I still have faith that with Gaute gone AoC will someday be like that, but right now it would just be nice if I could get in the game at all.

Did the last patch drive away that many people? Age of conan is 46 up from 47 yesterday!. At rock bottom it was 44 a few months ago. The X fire contest and free trials wore off and it looks as if this game is DOA again. Correct me where I'm wrong. up from #47 yesterday
Let me just throw this out there. I never liked AoC. Never bought into the hype, not a fan of Conan, and picked it up and played through the free month until I hit the well known level 20ish quest barrier and then left. It was somewhat enjoyable. About two months ago I decided "hey, it's been a while, maybe its kinda neat now." I didn't even play more than two days out of the month I paid for before dropping it again. There is absolutely nothing engaging about the game that I could find. I don't know what it is, but the game has no soul.
"well known 20ish barrier?" LOL, what lvl20 barrier, the quests begin at lvl20 after you leave tortage. Get your facts straight pal.

I guess mabey i just dont care if theres 30 highly populated servers or if theres just one highly populated server. I know theres a few populated aoc servers left, even if they go merged a while back. Doesnt increase my fun knowing theres an assload of other servers with a lot of people.

as I recall when they were up you guys ( the fans) seemed to think they meant a lot

I use xfire and only for chatting with friends who are in different games, no more no less. I also use Raptr which I know is not as known as xfire so I'm sure the AoC numbers are way lower there.

Xfire is not always 100% correct but it's pretty close to that. I also have never used it but it doesn't matter as long as some players do. The data they give is enough to make the calculations. It's the same principle they use to estimate TV-ratings.

No.
That's a pretty strong counter-argument.
Whether some people admit it or not, Xfire works just fine. When trials are introduced, Xfire numbers go up. When a game starts to lose subscriptions, Xfire numbers go down. While you cannot use it to calculate exact subscription numbers, It's a very effective tool in showing gaming trends.
If you go look at Age of Conan in Xfire, you will see that it has went down a lot during the last 6 months. Now Funcom has dropped subscription prices. Do you think this is A) a coincidence.. or age of Conan is loosing subscriptions so they need to drop prices?
Actually Xfire is a very good tool for seeing trends in MMOs (OMG I DONT USE XFIRE SO ITS USELESS!)
Look at the AoC stats and you see that last week wen the Free trial was reactivated the xfire had a noticeable increase so there were indeed alot of people cheking out the trial. Sadly this week its seems like the numbers have decreased to lower than before the trial were activated. This say nothng about the total numbers of subscribers. It just says something about the trend for AoC, and its not very positive.
If xfire is so pointless how come Funcom wants you to install it when you start the trial?
If WoW = The Beatles and WAR = Led Zeppelin Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

Most players (and Funcom) know how accurate Xfire is. It's just a handful of players that don't like it because they don't understand it. Statistics can be quite difficult to understand if you are below average intelligence and non-educated.
my friend statistics 101 - for a sample to be representative it has to match certain criterions. Google it ... and my answer; "no"+1

Terms like "sample size" and "sample quality" might sound cool in academic circles but in real life Xfire is an awesome tool for measuring gaming trends.
It's one of those things that shouldn't work, but somehow it does.
WAIT! so you are not the educated one? Given you do not know the terms that are as common as representative sample. Lemme give you a clue - for a sample to be representative it has to be random (Xfire is not random, IMHO) and it has to include at least 1000 people - speccialy to monitor trends ... with 500 people monitored even for example Norway national holiday could be seen here.

it just doesn't show true number it does however depict trends perfectly. If a game drops on xfire somethings up
if Xfire is completely wrong all the time. then why the hell is WOW #1 every single day of the week? and that is exactly dead on. if it sucked so bad WOW wouldnt be #1 every single day. why did AOC go really high near release and now its a lot lower? well not as many subs. no its not a 100% exact but its pretty good. stats are not based off every single person in society but sample sizes and this is exactly that. so its very close but not exact.
LOL such poor arguments I don't even hear in my class (and it is full of idiots) - WoW? Dude WoW has n00 % more players than anything else. What are you trying to prove exactly? Every program that is from time of digital should be able to show WoW has few mil wombies

read this part will ya: " Another criticism of the measuring system itself is that it fails the most important criteria of a sample: it is not random in the statistical sense of the word. Only a small fraction of the population is selected and only those that actually accept are used as the sample size. There are only 25,000 total American households that participate in the Nielsen daily metered system.[8] The resident population of the United States as of 2009 is about 307 million people.[9] Compounding matters is the fact that of the sample data that is collected, advertisers will not pay for time shifted (recorded for replay at a different time) programs [10] rendering the 'raw' numbers useless. In many local areas, the difference between a rating that keeps a show on the air and one that will cancel it is so small as to be statistically insignificant, and yet the show that just happens to get the higher rating will survive.[11] As the possible choices increase so does the margin of error resulting in the sampling sizes being too small"
so yeah xfire gets it wrong.

I agree with you in that based on looking at it from a stats point of view xfire is not very good. Just way too many people that have decided not to use it. I personally have not used xfire in 6 years.
I also am looking forward to the secret world, and really like some of the game ideas they have. AoC not doing well shouldn't hurt that TSW too much I don't think, after all they have quite a few differences from the description. I also think that the setting for AoC might not have been the best to bring in a lot of players. That is the main reason why I never tried it. I just wasn't interested in the world itself, so the game could have been perfect and I wouldn't try it. TSW seems like it may be able to get a broader player base though.
Edit: never got to type anything before posting, touchpad clicked post before i wrote anything.

it just doesn't show true number it does however depict trends perfectly.
Every program that is from time of digital should be able to show WoW has few mil wombies
whats xfire?? lol, I do not know any one playing mmo's who uses it... so we don't count as having played the game?
Xfire is not always 100% correct but it's pretty close to that. I also have never used it but it doesn't matter as long as some players do. The data they give is enough to make the calculations. It's the same principle they use to estimate TV-ratings.
hmm for the sake of it...

read this part will ya: " Another criticism of the measuring system itself is that it fails the most important criteria of a sample: it is not random in the statistical sense of the word. In many local areas, the difference between a rating that keeps a show on the air and one that will cancel it is so small as to be statistically insignificant, and yet the show that just happens to get the higher rating will survive.[11] As the possible choices increase so does the margin of error resulting in the sampling sizes being too small"
so yeah xfire gets it wrong.
on the topic. aoic is far from "dying", but as i see it it will also never be packed again, the game lacks some certain elements, at least for me as a pvp player.
anyhow the secret world looks good enough so im pretty sure that funcom will be just fine and dandy.
btw ive dl Ao the other day, after 12 years the world is still alive and kicking. its a beautiful idea to think about that a mmorpg has been around for 12 years, existing over the www. think about it.
cheers. helios.
