Having graphics problems help?

ShasoShaso Member Posts: 7

hey everyone just need a hand with my computer.

my computer is having really really bad graphics problems now its hard to describe but i will try my best. ok so lets take a tree for example now it looks like a normal tree but after a few mintues it starts to Stretch out (thats the only way i can describe it) and it does it with characters too so say their nose will again stretch out and its like a big rectangle of skin colour that moves with the character.

Now that's just the start of it so after this happens but graphics card apparently fails and had to be rebooted its very annoying because after it happens about 3 times it wants to restart the computer.

so that's my problem, now i don't want suggestions like just go buy another computer because i don't have the cash for that.

also a note i had asked people at computer shops and one guy said that i needed a new power supply and the other said i needed more fans on my power supply so any takes on that?

Thanks

I know the problem you're having I've had it happen in LotRO before. Generally I just needed to dust out the heatsink on my GPU to get it running cool enough but you should also make sure you have the newest drivers and dust out the CPU/PSU/case while you're at it and see if those steps help.

ah thanks i will try that and let you know how it goes. im gald im not the only person who has had this problem lol

It's probably one of two things. First your graphics card fan if you have one, is it spinning? If not, replace it, card is over heating. If it is spinning, how old is your card, may be it's just time for new one. No fan on the graphics card go get a new card. Second, as the computer tech said, it may be your power supply, dust it out. Again how old is it? In my experience hardly any graphics card, power supply or hard drive, lasts more than 5 years, if your lucky.

Sounds like your GPU is overheating. Probably time for a new graphics card.

In my experience they last a few years at best, and alot of times if they overheat one time then they never work the same again.

What video card do you have in there?

This is normally a sign that your graphics card is slowly dying of heat-problems This will almost always happen on gfx cards when they reach a certain age no matter how clean  u have kept r computer

well my graphics card is a ATi Radeon X1600 PRO 512mb

and yeah my computer wasn't kept clean very well when i cleaned it last night you should have seen the amount of dust in there

It sounds like you are describing something similar to that link, maybe not as bad.

I'm gonna agree with everyone else and say it's a heat issue with your GPU.  If things aren't working properly still now that you've cleaned it I suggest getting a new one.  Good news is that your card is kinda old and you can get a cheap, newer one that can easliy perform just as good as the one you had.

Make games you want to play.

yes that link that's exactly how it is for me, well that's really good news that i can pick one up for cheap i was getting worried i would have to spend a lot just to get a new one

Also what is a good card to upgrade too? it would be prefered if i didn't have to spend a lot of money on it

It sorta depends on the rest of your computer and what games you are looking to play but I'm guessing it's altogether an older system, probably around an Athlon 64 3500+ so I wouldn't bother with much more than an ATI 4670 for $70 and has a $30 mail in rebate:

Or you can get a 4850 for $100 which is still a good buy even with the new DX11 cards out:

The Nvidia 9600GT is the other budget card but can't really compete with a 4670 for $40 or a 4850 for just ~$15 more.

Also that rebate on the 4670 is a weekend only deal but there are other 4670's on there with rebates just as good going on.
