HDTV as a PC Monitor - Good Idea?

Would an HDTV with 1920x1080 resolution make a good computer monitor? Lets say a 32 or a 37 incher, would the screen be too big and look blocky and pixelated because each pixel is just too large? Or would it have the same 'sharpness' as a legit monitor?
Would anyone out there using an HDTV as a PC monitor chime in and give your two cents on your experience with this?
My specs: Intel QX9650 chip, 8g DDR2 800 ram, GTX295 vid card.

You'd be fine. Just have to make sure you're sitting far enough away. If you're too close to a monitor, no matter what the resolution is, it can look blocky.

I say go for it, i have hooked up one to a 27 inch HDTV and it looked good, so i don't think you will have any problems.
judging by the rest of your kit you'll be playing at high frame rates so find a 100hz tv to avoid screen tearing
i used to pc game on a 37" 720p lg tv that was quite cheap and i had no problems with sharpness at all so i say go for it
i was looking into getting a LG 32LH5000 and it seems like quite a solid purchase as far as i can tell, gonna have to wait a while to get it though

A friend of mine uses his 46" as a second monitor, and it works great. Picture is really crisp.
When a buddy of mine and I used to goof on EvE before our evening at the nightclub started, we used to throw up the images on to the club's large 50 inch HD projection screens. They looked awesome. Highly detailed and no blocky images or anything like that. If this holds true to 32in+ HDTVs, I do not know for certain but I would assume they too would have similar results.

I personally use a Samsung 40" HDTV using HDMI to DVI from Monitor to PC, my video card is a Geforce 9800 GTX and i can tell you for the past 3 years i have owned this setup i have never had any problems or issues with the following exception:
HEAT
The screen generates allot of heat! the space between the monitor and myself sits around 3 feet and i still feel the heat at time, i had to purchase a stand up fan just to circulate and reduce the heat generated by the screen.
Otherwise, no issues and i play just about every MMO that comes out, i also have my PS3 on the 2nd HDMI for console games and blueray movies.
One side benefit is the PiP (Picture in Picture) if you connect cable to the HDTV you can watch normal cable TV PiP while playing your favorite games!

Computer monitors are much better for this use.
Yup if you have a system capable of running at that resolution well, go for it. As Monkey said the only thing you really want to watch for is make sure to buy a good quality one with a 100Mhz refresh rate. I run a 40" which IMO is about the biggest you want to go unless you are sitting six feet back with a cordless keyboard and mouse. 8)

How far away do yall think I'd have to sit away from the monitor if I got a 32 or a 37? I'm have 2.5 feet (.76 meters) of space, but have room to move it back another foot (.3 meters). Think that will be enough space?
Would anyone have any suggesstions on a HDTV? An LG was mentioned...
This one is a bit expensive, but would this one suffice?

Have fun, I have just upgraded from an 37 inch monitor to a 60 inch Mitsubishi DPL TV for 3d work on my computer and I love it.
Only thing I might suggest is to wait till next year when the new 3d ready TVs hit the market so you can both watch TV and game in 3d.
i was 3.5ft away with my 37 and it was awesome
yeah that tv looks quite good decent contrast ratio etc, 120hz refresh rate
i would recommend doing an internet search on it for reviews just to check to see if it has any problems though

using a 32" HDTV as my primary monitor. don't get the highest resolution on it, but it still looks great.
depending on how you connect it to your computer, it may be difficult to get it setup just right. NVIDIA control panel is very useful when setting up an HDTV

I have the Westinghouse 42" LCD Monitor model # VM-42F140S which is essentially a 1080P HDTV/Monitor without a built-in tuner. It sits on my desk about 18 inches from my face and I love gaming with this thing.
Of course, I now glow in the dark but you have to sometimes make little sacrifices for good gaming.
Optimal viewing distance is 1 meter per 10 inches.
Just go for normal monitor, every technology freak knows that tvs suck for computer use.

Yeah maybe like 3-5 yrs ago! HDTVs make excellent monitors now, don't cost much more and are quite larger for the value. You can get a 40" Proscan from various locations for $500....I use that as my monitor now and it works great. I also only sit like 2 maybe 3 feet when reclined from it and it looks great and doesn't hurt my eyes after hours playing games either!

Do you have any facts to cover your opinion? I already gave mine. The quality is just crap compared to real computer monitors.
