Do you think this would play games such as Aion and/or EvE online?

Aion has a good engine so it might play it good, you will have lag on cities, but almost any system has that problem, everywhere else you should be fine.

For Eve is ok as well.

But it will have some problem playing games like AoC for example and every recent MMORPG (except Aion)

That's a $900 laptop on bestbuy.com and if you ask me, way over priced.  You can get a Windows based laptop that will be much better for gaming at a lower price.  Also, the videocard on that laptop isn't that great past playing something like wow.  Will it run Aion?  It should, but don't expect to crank the graphics and resolution up very high.  Last, if you are looking to play Aion you will need to buy a copy of XP and run bootcamp (or Windows 7 if you wanna bother with their new OS).  Aion does not support Mac OS X currently.

Not chose a Mac for any particular reason. I've run a lot of Window desktop PC's for years and fancied a change.

Thanks for your advice on that.  I wasn't aware that you were not able to play Aion on a Mac so might re-think my decision.  I think it might be wise to shop around as you are suggesting.

NB: I'm quite new to this forum and have been really impressed with the responses and site so far. Thanks all for your responses!

For anyone else trying to value it, £900 GBP is about $1475 USD, drop off the VAT and you're around $1225 USD. That exact laptop retails at Best Buy for $900.

The Mac surcharge is significant, you can save money (re: get better hardware) by using a Windows laptop but the Macs do get better battery life and look a little sleeker.

So, how important is Mac OS, screen size, and total price?

My suggestion would be to take a look at:
    http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/laptop/range/x65.html
Roughly the same speed processor, quite a bit faster graphics in the Geforce 130M (just above the 9650M in performance), 17" display and costs £658 with Win7 (cheaper if you pick XP).

They also have a 15.6" laptop with a Geforce 105M for £543 w/Win7. This one is very equivalent in speed to the Mac you were looking at as the 105M just slightly faster than a 9400M, but has a larger screen:

If there is a brand new computer that can't play WoW then their is something wrong. Just wondering why you're going Mac........... It not really notorious as a gaming machine, they are more expensive than their PC counterparts. The only thing that is really different between Mac and PC is the OS, and if your smart you won't get viruses on a PC.  I havent had one on my PC in years.

If I were to spend that much money on a Laptop at bestbuy id get this any day over an Mac. www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp

Don't buy a MAC if gaming is your focus, stick with Windows for most compatibilitiy.

    This.

If you plan on using games and applications - then consider if the applications work identical on both the Mac and the PC. Most do. If you still must have the Mac OS - you are going to need a much larger hard drive and pick up a copy of Windows 7 for use with boot camp. Otherwise, your going to have a laptop dedicated to wow and a handful of applications that you use on a regular basis.

Also, something to keep in mind, the Core 2 Duo for laptops (just like PCs) come in many, many different flavors. Generally, the larger the CPU cache, the more expensive the laptop will be. A larger cache may be more responsive than a simular CPU clocked slightly faster. Also, settle for no less than 4 gigs of RAM today. The prices are RAM are so cheap these days that manufacturers tend to throw in the extra memory for free as an incentive.

One last tip, you may want to wait until the end of November to buy (at least here in the states, I have no clue about overseas). It's the time when stores reduce prices to bring in the end of year sales for christmas and such.
