I want to like this game, but everyone seems to be a mime

I've tried this game several times, never making it past level 15 on 1 class, and I really like this game, but it's almost a 1 player game. I've seen players running around in the lower level areas, but everytime I try to talk to them they just run by. It's a very hard game to understand and get into, and I really want to, but the community of this game makes it very hard. Not to mention linkshells seem to be the only global chat or new help, but without knowing how to get one or how they work, it defeats the purpose of being a place to go for help.

If I were to try 1 more time.... any servers out there that are newbie friendly and will help a new player learn how to play?

If you happen to start on Kujata, let me know. I'll get you a linkshell.

    You don't have to try.

    It is very simple.

Book mark 2-3 site into your brain or your browser.

    www.FFxiah.com

    http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

    and finally.

    www.ffxionline.com

If you don't mind getting hack ... try google FFXI altas.

Bluegaytr and ifirit is more for experts. I never like alakazam.

First of all, there are tons of people around. type /sea all

It will pop up the list of 2000+ people.

Secondly, the world is VERY big compare to other game. It is like trying to meet an unexpected friend in the jungle.

and thirdly, like every game, no one come back to beginning area. But FFXI is different since everyone need to level another job @ level 1, you will see new players.

    none

The community is terrible in the game I'd say. I usualy wound up soloing jobs to about 20.

I really think alot of the thing's SquareEnix had designed, had been changed by the players. For example, linkshells are supposed to be used to help other players out. I've been in alot of them and very rarely can you ever get help. There's really just a few types of linkshells.

Social Linkshell - The ones that everyone joins to just chat.

End Game Linkshell - The ones that people join to do "End game" for obtaining gear. Some may use you to get what they want then screw you over by either kicking you, or just scamming you. (This has happened to me before. I wasted my whole summer with a sky linkshell for this to happen.)

Starting a new game, yeah you'll probaly have a hard time meeting people and such. When you start doing parties and such, you'll start to meet more people, may get invited to a linkshell and it'll help alot.

Five years ago the starting areas were hoppin'. I remember first starting out in West Ronfaure and people everywhere. I didn't even know how to equip my weapon so I beat this Wild Rabbit to death with my fists. Some dudes cheered me on. It felt great (this was also my very first fight ever in an MMO!).

A few days later I was resting on the side of a trail in Konschtat Highlands and this super high level RDM approached me and /checked me (I was also a red mage). He then offered me to join his Linkshell and that turned out to be the coolest group of people I've ever met in a game (still unmatched). They were all mainly playing RDM, dabbling in other jobs. They'd help anyone if they could. It was a great Linkshell.

It's sad that today the game's pretty much nothing but high level players all hanging out at Whitegate or wherever (I wouldn't know, since I never made it past 30 - mostly because I just couldn't stand the grind anymore, not because of the community, mind you). And pretty much the only people you'll see in low level areas are either new gilsellers getting powerleveled as quick as possible or you may see an actual person, but chances are they're not there to socialize with anyone and probably know some people in game that they chat with solely.

FFXI a half decade ago was a wonderful place where you couldn't go 10 feet without seeing people -- friendly people -- having a good time, learning the ropes and teaching each other. I've played several MMOs since and have never encountered such a feeling of comradery amongst the players as I've felt in FFXI. I'm sure its still there but, well, the game's old so everyone's in the high areas.

So, yeah, you're gonna need to read up to learn your way these days. There's plenty of info out there and Square Enix has made leveling up early on much, much faster than the old days.

I've tried returning a few times but just felt way too behind and everyone I once knew was gone so I was all alone. It will be an uphill battle for any new person starting. Best bet is to make friends on a message board and get into a Linkshell that values fun over leetness.

Man, 2004 was a magical time for this game.

Well that was years ago. Now the community is trash, and everywhere I went. Yeah it was no knew people, alot of assholes, and nobody helped anyone. I was kind enough to help people because i ran out of things to do. The high level players everywhere in whitegate part. Sometimes I'd run around on my samurai and show off. I had some pretty nice gear. I worked for all of it, and i had alot of pride in what i worked for. And nothing could get to me more, than some punk coming up to you, thinking they know everything about the job, and just trash your gear. The biggest problem was nobody could accept anyone for who they were and what they had. I played alot of MMOs and I have NEVER seen people like this.

Just makes you wish you could go back in time to when the game was a happier place huh?

There are SOME nice people, but they are just hard to find. It's gone from that to, Selfishness, Judgemental players, Dictators, and more. It's just sad..

So sad to see what this game has become. I blame Square Enix.

I hope FFXIV doesn't end up like this. Who am I kidding? Of course it will. Well, I suppose we can expect a few good years from FFXIV before it turns into nothing but bitter players who treat the game like a fulltime job.

  • SatimasuSatimasu Member UncommonPosts: 900

You can't blame SE for what people have turned the game into. I do disagree with the whole "You must be this job combo or don't play the job..." mentality. Since there are more ways to do things without parties or at least less people than a full party setup, you do have more freedom than before to do things how you want. There are some job combos that are just bad and aren't helpful in any way, and you should be free to do that as long as you are not detrimental to a party.

A lot of people are into efficiency in a party to get the most possible exp in the shortest amount of time. You can't blame them for that. But, there has to be more than just one sub to be able to use on a job for different situations, which there are.

The thing is, people always say "you won't get a party if you don't play this way". That's when you make your own.

Well I decided to give it another try. I log on... and find my account is banned. Why? I don't know. I was a member for 3 months, cancelled my sub cause I got bored soloing, come back 2 mo. later, and it's banned. Ok, whatever, I didn't lose much I was only level 12 in 2 jobs. So I go to try to start a new account...says I can't with my code. Fine, I'll get a trial account and then subscribe. Nope, won't let me do that either, says my email is already associated with an account.

So... I guess FFXI isn't the game for me.

Well it's sad that this is how the community has turned out. I can understand though, this is a pretty freakin old game by MMO standards. I was thinking about starting back up but then again my character has a few lvl 75s and I know I have some friends still kicking away so it won't be a problem for me.

I can tell you why it's gonna be hard for new players though. I'd say 90% of the people playing ffxi right now have at least 1 job to 75. So in essence the vast majority of players are at the end of the game. So going back and helping John Q newb with things like getting his sub job or kazham keys and other junk that you have to do to get anywhere in the beginning is probably not even on their priority list or pretty much near the bottum. Does this suck for new people? Yeah. Does it mean the community is bad for this happening? I'm not too sure.

Let me ask you a question. If you had made it to the end of the and along the way helped god only knows how many people get there sub job, kazham, keys, G1 Items, and all those other little things that you do when you start out in ffxi, would you rather help people with that kind of stuff? Or would you rather do some fun stuff like, SEA, Ehinherjar, and salvage? I mean c'mon when I left even SKY seemed kind of "entry level".

So I wouldn't really say this community is bad or mean I would just say that you joined about 3-7 years too late. There is some good news though, FFXIV is supposed to be coming out next year so look forward to that. By the time you get into anything cool everyone will be leaving for that anyways.

Then get another email account...not like its hard or time consuming to do!  Its the same as with the key; you've used it so u gotta get another one!  If you gave up this quick, then yeah FFXI is definitely not for you...

They do not allow it. I tried way back when I first tried the game with an email. Then I came back about 6 months later and when I put in a new email, they banned my account a week later due to having the same information on the new account but a different email. So once you try, you're bound to keep the 1st account or they ban you. As for my account now... I don't know what's going on. Like I said I played for 2 months, left for 3, came back and banned. No reason given, and now I can't get a new account.

well the toughest part of this game is to get started. as in choosing a lvling a job to 30. being established into a craft and finally a linkshell. but afterward the game does get quite rewarding. however it is tough, esp on the servers with less people to lvl in. if you didnt know ffxi is a full party based game. unlike wow and others were you can solo, ffxi will force you to work with others. it has its ups and down.

Then change some info up, I've done it over a dozen times and it worked just fine.

How would I go about changing information on an account to pay for it? If something isn't right, it won't process payment. So that would leave me in the same boat.... no account. I think I'll probably wait for FFXIV where this payment system isn't used.

By a new copy of the collection then, you'll have to anyway as the trial is only the base FFXI, it costs what $20 and you can make another account with the same personal/payment info again.  I have several times in the past as well.
