Many games have promised to be the WoW-killer. None delivered on that promise so far.

I do not think even Blizzard can top what happened with WOW. Just one of those times when time and place and IP all worked at exactly the right time.

Not to take anything from them, whatever MMO they put out i am sure it will do well, but kind of hard to hit the lottery more than once in a lifetime:)

ummm... AoC and WAR delivered on killing WoW? lets.... WoW millions of subs and still growing, AOC and WAR probably never even peaked at a million active subs and practically died within their first year, though AoC is at least still flailing about, WAR is just dead (argue it all you want but i spent several months on WAR along with my brother, both at launch, and this summer, played on multiple servers, multiple guilds, both realms, over 40 toons throughout every tier, etc, and its just plain done for) unless they revamp their entire dev team and give players a real reason to come back.

    If anything kills WoW in the future, it will either be;

    A) SWTOR

    B) Next Blizzard MMO

    c) WoW 2

I really don't see it happening anytime soon though.

Who really cares, honestly?  Cuz I don't,  Im happy for Blizz and their WoW players and Im happy with my game.   I don't even think Blizzs new MMO they are working on will be as successful. People don't want to play other WoW clones because its obvious, people don't want to play a copy of a game when they can play the original.   The more sandboxish games the masses don't want to play obviously because they are all playing WoW.

WoW is kinda like Michael Jackson's Thriller. Its has the number 1 record sales of all time with 110 mill  the next closest is at 50 million.    MJ's next best seller was 9 years later with dangerous at 30mill. Blizzard has hit their high point and while the next game might do well considering most games sit around 500k subs or less, its going to be hard to top what they have already done.

I don't think anything will kill wow, but rather it will even the market out like it should be.

If I had to guess what rivals wow it would be something from a independent studio.  Maybe 38 studios or something that just isn't on the radar right now.  Bioware looks to be the only exception right now, but I am cautious about hyped games that have historically not delivered.

RED 5 Studio  talk some seriously awesome talk, but it'll be a while until we can actually see something.

I think Cataclysm will either damage WoW - OR propel it firmly into the 20million mark. Its blizzard so probably the latter.

But blizzards next mmo... mm you just know its going to be a sandbox. cannot wait to hear the crying about that. I might not play WoW any more, but I fucking love the QQ associated with it.

Playing polished, lag free, feature complete games is carebear. Whining about a game you hate but still play is hardcore man!

What specific games are you talking about? I don't remember any game stating it would be a killer. It was always the community saying that.

Hey, that would be pretty fun if it's anything like Diablo multiplayer :(

The only wow-killer there will ever be is TIME, and ITSELF.

I wouldn't be too confident. There is a Star Wars MMO coming along the way and it is being developed by Bioware. Star Wars is even bigger than Warcraft and well, Bioware delivered quite a lot of over-the-top games.
