Is it worth trying this game?

joejccva71joejccva71 Member UncommonPosts: 848

I know that I have to pay $60 to play the beta. I'm so bored out of my mind right now that I need a new MMO to play and I have a friend that plays but he says that while the game is somewhat fun, all he does is craft and build up skills then goes out an pvp's.

I could ask people on the official MO site what they think but they are biased.

So I figured I'd come here and and ask some non-biased folks about what they think of the game. I know it's beta, I know the game is far from finished and has bugs.

I'm curious about whether or not the game is:

1. Fun to play and something I could "get into".
2. Somewhat populated..I don't expect millions of people, but are there atleast enough on the server to play with?

Can someone give me some advice? Is it worth trying this?

Not worth it yet due too many features missing ATM. I'm not expecting a miracle patch for what I need.

I would advise waiting for release, and see how it is then. At the moment it is only a 'game' in the most technical sense.

I agree with this sentiment.  It will be a raw and rough release so I suggest the faint of heart wait 6 months to a year after release before trying.

The real question is Darkfall or Mortal Beta?

    Trolls = Hardcore
    Fanbois = Carebears

The only posts I read in threads are my own.

    Darkfall obviously

I have preordered the game but I don't expect to open the box when/if it arrives for another year or so irrespective of whether it actually launches when they claim or not. I do expect them to launch it soon as I get the feeling they need the cash.

If you were within arms reach right now I would throttle the life out of you.

You do NOT "have to pay $60 to play the beta". You have to pay $60 to PURCHASE THE GAME (not pre-purchase, purchase. If you pre-purchased something you'd buy it before you bought it which doesn't make any sense...a full pre-order would be a better term). With that purchase comes ASSURED beta access. However, that is NOT the ONLY way to get into the beta. You can apply, there will be and I think already were contests and etc. Since so many people already pre-ordered even if you bought it now you wouldn't get into the beta any time soon because they are inviting people in blocks. Your block is determined on a first come, first served basis.

After the first day of sales they already had people moved into the E block and beyond. Each block was (I believe) a few thousand people. The game will probably release in spring of '10. I really can't imagine it coming out this year. SV is a team of -developers- rather than a bunch of corporate suits who have no idea what they're doing. They have proven to love gaming and us (the community, they have hosted community events in the past with stuff like DoTA and regularly reply to posts). If they run out of money completely and they have absolutely no other options but to release then we may see before the end of the year.

SV has said repeatedly that the last thing they want is to release something they wouldn't be proud of. They don't want to end up with a reputation like AV and be struggling along with a game fewer and fewer people want to touch. So far SV has been completely upfront about everything. The pre-orders are there to help development costs, they said this when they announced the pre-orders they didn't play kiddy shadow games and try to conceal it. They, so far, haven't concealed anything about what is going on with the beta. Even if you aren't in the beta it's not hard to find out what exactly they are doing, just go ask them or search the forums as it's probably already been asked and answered.

Getting a little off-track with my fanboyism though....yeah I freely admit that, SV has earned it as far as I'm concerned. You can go ahead and pre-order it now if you want, but you may end up waiting awhile before whatever block you get into is put in the beta. Buying the game now doesn't give you instant beta access and SV hasn't ever said that, so be sure you re-read anything you saw before you argue with me on that.

I can't say much but the last patches has adding a lot of value to this game and they soon add more. In several areas they have already the best solution compaired to any MMO. But I can't mention any details without breaking NDA.

Because it's still beta, so for ordinary gamers, I recommend to stay tuned until release and check out coming official videos but more important ... what the testers have to say when NDA is gone.

Throttle the liffe out of him? Man, get help. Seriously... you remind me of those guys that lit some guy on fire because he told the cops they stole his bike.

Besides he was correct in the sense that if you pre-order the game then you will get into beta. If you dont like that then tell Starvault not to offer beta for pre-orders.

As for the OP I got one word for you. Alpha...

You could always buy the game now and wait till it releases to play.

You don't have to participate in the beta.

But only if you intend to play when the game releases, regardless.

Think of MO as a rough, albiet rather  rough, gem that is polished after release.

    If it's easier.

Think of MO as Darkfall but,

    More fun.

    Better looking.

    A truer sandbox.

With all the features that are supposed to be there.

Just like AV spent the past year refining and improving on thier game, SV will be doing the same.

It's the nature of being an indipendant company with limitted resources.

Or in Darkfalls case, an incompitent company.

    Yea...

    Other then that it's beta.

Buy it if you want to play the game.

    ALPHA. not even a beta.

Not worth the money, let them ride the crest of their own wave. Let them release the game without pre-order funds.

And let Indys learn from thier mistakes.

You are pitiful person. You seem to not understand that the MO beta is real beta. All the things what we are testing are for the testing of the overall general functionality. So I suggest you to stop commenting whiteout real knowledge about the game and it's state. Sorry but that comment was worth laugh.

You can burn me, but i wont die.

ROFLMAOGOMOV, you gotta be kidding right?

Not sure how to take that.

    Like,

OMG, it hasn't got a chance,

    Or,

    OMG, of course it will?

I believe it'll be in a state that it could launch by the end of the year.

    Barring anything drastic accuring.

I don't believe in miracle patches, but my patch is coming.

    Don't expect polish.

I think when it launches in will be rough.

If you're looking for a game like MO, I think you'll enjoy it enough to get through.  Not everyone though.  There are going to be a lot who won't like it, or expect a certian level of polish in a released game, and they're justified.

By the middle of the next year, MO will have seen the same level of polish that DF has.

I believe that SV is capable of releasing with all of the core mechanics that they said they would.

I think it's well within SV's ability to give us a little more then some expect.

    I'm excited for the game.

I think SV has been doing a phenominal job.

I'm just gonna say that MO is not worth it. It is too bland atm.

I'm taking a break from Darkfall until the expansion and decided to try out MO. It was a bad choice imo. I didn't even update my MO client in more than a month..

It depends on where you live and when you play. I live on the west coast and play late night. I almost never get to login because of the downtime of the login server. The Devs do not work 24/7 so you are out of luck if it goes down during your game play.

As far as the game, it only has a sliver of the map with one race to test with. Most things are placeholders and not the actual launch build. So if you play at the right times and have a large chunck of time to craft for PvP. It can be fun for what it is at the moment. If you are looking for a new complete game. Just wait for launch and make up your mind then.

A lot of stuff is still missing, and even more stuff needs work.  If your looking for a polished bug free game this is not it and I dont think it will be at launch.    If your looking for large scale territorial battles and guild warfare than I am not convinced this game will be better than Darkfall.  ( IMO EVE is still THE game for territorial conquest and will be for a long time.)     Lastly, if your looking for the UO vision ( A TRUE sandbox)  with tons of potential, I would say yes this might just be your game.

Like someone else has stated, rumor is the NDA will be lifted VERY soon...     I would do a wait and see if its your thing or not.

When was the last time you logged into the beta?

Have you even read the changelogs?

There's been more then one race for over a month.

    Where have you been?

    http://twitter.com/MortalBeta

That's the twitter for server announcements.

You can see every time they reboot or patch the server.

They haven't been having server issues for a while now.

Considering another beta only allows you to play on specific days, at specific times, and SV is actually running the server 24.

It's amazing how much public info is available to follow.

    You should read up first.

I would recommend preordering the game.  You get the benefit of being able to beta test the game for a couple of months until it officially releases.  I can tell you that the game is great.

You do understand that they have said, many times in fact, that they have a version of the client NOT currently playable that is fully enabled, right?

So far SV hasn't lied or even tried to conceal what they were doing. These pre-purchases were ADMITTED as a means to help them ease their budget along to make developing the game for longer well...easier. It's not hard to tell what they're doing with the beta right now since they post updates on the forums all the time. They said months ago that they have a fully enabled client ready, but that they will not be putting that client up to test since it made more sense to introduce parts of the game to the testing community rather than just lump everything out there all at once.

Believe it or not this is usually standard practice. They had what was probably a really buggy, fully enabled client that they could have released with. Then we would have dealt with a second DF fiasco. Instead they can give the testers a stable(er) client, fix bugs, introduce more to the client, stabilize, and so on and forth. This is more or less the same thing Warhammer Online tried to do, but, and I can't stress this enough, BUT the major difference here is that SV doesn't have a publisher like EA breathing down their necks.

All of us in the CB for WAR kept telling the devs that the game was NOT in a healthy release state, but they just ignored us. From everything I have heard from testers and seen myself SV is taking their time (because they can) and listening to the community (because that makes good business sense). I'm not saying MO is going to be great, but so far SV has at least shown me that there are dev studios out there that are skilled, professional and in-touch with the community. If nothing else those are three major pluses going for them.

Also keep in mind that MO is going to be more or less like the UO of old. Take a look at the features list, the complete features list and decide for yourself if you like them. It's not 'perfect', but it's a very good start and more importantly doesn't try to do too much....we'll see.
