I was just wondering what everyone would think if ....
out of your 4 choices on each side, they made a crafter class??? I bet you would get some mixed reactions.
Just imagine it happened, what would be your reaction?
Think of the limitations in combat profession choices. Does it outweigh the versatility you could have with a crafter?

What a horrible title for this thread.
it caught me off guard to : (
there goes my excitement.
I say meh to pure crafters. Topic needs a new title also, you sneaky snake.
gotta give people hope!! there has been very little new info since PAX :-(

Why a crafter class? Why not just classes with actual professions, that actually work like professions with the complexity or fun factor you are seeking. And I'm pretty sure they said, people can focus primarily on crafting with their characters,
Would be nice, but I really can't see them designing a crafter class. This is going to be an action/adventure RPG stylee thing. It's not gonna be SWG2, we're not gonna get our lovely sandboxy crafting back.
Practically speaking, can you imagine them having to write and design a complete storyline for crafters?
"Go now! Build be 4,000 blaster barrels! The future of the Republic depends on you!" - Ok, that's actually practical in a way, but not exactly heroic.
Nevermind, a mod changed the title, so no need to flame the OP now.
What if you're an engineer on a ship? "Go, repair the break in the hull before the Sith board us!"
Or if you're making a bounty hunter a sweet innovative new gun? "The man ordered the barrel x long and made out of this rare material found in this secluded place." And after the chain for each part you complete the gun and find the the hunter doesn't actually want it. He decided to quit being a BH, but still pays you and lets you keep your new creation (and the knowledge you gained to build more).
Even later on, what if the Republic needed a new state-of-the-art Starship? A Noble order a grand new mansion from you, or maybe a new luxury cruiser. A renowned Republic Trooper with many metals orders a new set of very specified armor, made with techniques never attempted before. The crafter could take an independent study to create a blaster from blueprints he found in an old set of ruins (like building DaVinci's helicopter type of deal). Not to mention all of the drama is possible when looking into the relations between craftsman. I mean, craftsman are all about building new, innovative, awesome things (or even some old archaic things for the first time), and it's about the competition and relations betweens other craftsman and their clients.
Would it be pretty sweet? Yeah. Will it happen? Probably not, sadly.

I totally understand they wont be making a crafter class. That would be retarded only having 3 combat prof's on each side.
The game isn't coming out for awhile. Indulge me and use your imaginations. Imagine your an Imperial trooper on an isolated base in Fondor. You've been in the service for 4 and a half years, but you grow tired of the same old imperial rations and would love to spend your remaining days in the harvesting field finally listening to your father and working on that upgraded design you and him worked on before you enlisted.
Little did you know that if you had only thought about it a little more deeply you would have realized you could increase the cooling capacity of your hydrogen reactor unit by 25% if you had only considered the velocity of objects when traveling through a heavy medium and how it could be reduced by simple means of friction reduction techniques.
God if only you would have thought of that before. Maybe your farm would have made enough money to afford the operation your father needed to pull through...
oh god why did you enlist. I could have served the war in a better way!!

I'd like to point out that the Dev's have already said that yes there will be crafting, but no there will be not crafting specific class as crafting isn't "Heroic" and that is what they are going for. It would be kind of hard to tell a crafting story and considering this MMO is going to be fully voiced and focusing on story a crafting class would be incredible boring.
A crafting class sounds almost as much fun as a Hairdresser class.
Almost...

Not everyone enjoys the same thing. I was one of the best pvper's on Flurry and Bria in SWG, not bragging just stating a fact, and enjoyed pvp a lot in SWG.
But the thing I miss doing the most in SWG was playing my chef, sure you can still be a chef in SWG now but it's not the same, the foods don't mean as much and the complexity of making foods and being a top chef is completely different now.

I fail to see why you would need a dedicated class to do that. Why not just make it a profession?

why dont we just copy WoW more. F*** professions. Crafters can play a part in war times as well.
since old school SWG, nobody can get crafting right. It's because everyone wants to copy WoW. Why does crafting have to be an after-thought or a side profession?
Regardless, I will play TOR, but after reading some of these posts, even if you are a devout hater of WoW, most of you can't seem to think beyond its control.

I'm honestly not interested in another SWG. I would say that crafter was a big part of SWG, but when it came down to it, crafter was what destroyed the SWG economy. Without further discussing SWG, I think that crafter could be a nice addition, but it would become an alt character. And since this game is going to be story driven, I highly doubt they could come up with enough content for a crafter class. Truth be told, there's really nothing heroic about a crafter class.
Haha did you get that idea from FFFXIV?Look to Square Enix to pull off anything and any design, most i see think it is dumb or stupid, well we will see how Square does it ,then other games can learn how to use creative thought.Heck not long after FFXI utilized the Dancer class ,i was reading Blizzard was thinking of designing a dancer class lmao.
I think it is too bad how SWG has sort of died off and now we have i think is Bioware making a new version?IMO the best thing that could have happened to this game was for it to die, then have SOE make a new one with better standards.I believe SOE retained some sort of rights to make a sequel,so i think they had every intention of making a newer game.
You will only get a wide range of classes and game play from an SOE game, weather you like it or not,it is still SOE who delivers the BIG in games.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Copy WoW, hah, I guess any future game to not have crafting classes is a WoW clone. Actually it's just a better idea. To a lot of people, playing a pure crafter is boring, being able to do combat and gather for professions is it a lot more fun. Don't blame the developers or WoW for that matter, players just don't want this sort of thing or don't care about it. Even if BioWare wanted it, a crafting class story line would be boring. You know, galaxies still has crafting classes, enjoy it.
How do you know a crafting "class" even exists in the SW mythos?
I saw zero crafting in any of the star wars movies.
Maybe it's not about being in the control of WoW but instead recognizing an imbecilic idea for what it is and laughing at the person to purpose it?

I seriously doubt we'll ever see something like that.

It's not a "new version" it's a completely different game. Their are seriously no similarities besides the IP, even then BioWare created the Old Republic era. SoE wouldn't know what to do with it. Rumor is SoE is getting to make a new SW mmo, maybe they will put the "big" into it.
If crafting classes is big to you, you have your standards set pretty damn low.
It'd be about the only thing that would make me reconsider giving the game a try. Of course, then I'd have a heck of a time trying to figure out how Vogel was going to make a crafting class that didn't let crafting get in the way of being heroic or iconic.

Very nice find. Looked liked the jedi poped a heal in the animation.
That is a sweet find although some of us kind of figured that there was an espionage class. While not appearing in the movies in a significant capacity, treachery and espionage were two things that helped shape both the Clone Wars and Rebellion eras into what they became. Also, the Imperial Spy would make for a nice counter to the Smuggler (a light, fast-moving range fighter)
While it might be cool to have a crafting class, perhaps it would be best if that was just left classless like it was in Auto Assault and Tabula Rasa (two games that ultimately tanked unfortunately but you get the idea.) I still maintain the theory that the last class duo will be some kind of defensive caster. With Jedi/Sith we have offensive casters who are beasts in melee. Trooper/Bounty Hunter make up the multi-talented fighter class. Spies/Smugglers are rogues. So the last class has to be a "Cleric." Now with every class having a healing ability, that means the emphasis would be more on buffs/debuffs. You could still solo quite well, but groups are where you really shine.
Other people have suggested an "Officer" type class but I don't know, I don't see Officers soloing all that well. A tech-specialist (buffing allies and yourself with minor tinkering, hacking to fry enemy tech) or biochemist (toxins for your enemies, stimulants for you and your allies) might be a better fit. Granted there aren't many obvious examples of this archetype but then we started drifting away from recognize figures once we named the Jedi, Sith, Smuggler, Trooper, and Bounty Hunter.
I'm all about crafting, but I don't see this game taking that approach. This is going to be a linear, action based MMORPG with next to no sandbox style play. Therefore, I would predict that the crafting system will be limited and will mirror something like WARs crafting system oppose to something like SWG. I suppose we could always hope for a crafting push though:)
