Sony purchasing Turbine?

I've heard rumors that this may or may not have happened or is the process, however early, of happening. Has anybody else heard that Sony is working on acquiring Turbine?

    We announce our distributor for the expack...
    AC Letter to the Players

    If you haven’t read the press release yet or heard it from your buddies, fantastic news for the Asheron’s Call Throne of Destiny expansion pack:

    Our distributor will be Sony Online Entertainment. We’ll be partnering with SOE to get the expansion pack on the retail shelves and to market it.

    That’s right; come the spring of this year, the developer and publisher of EverQuest, Star Wars Galaxies and Planetside will be putting the ACTD expansion pack on a retailer’s shelf near you and will be helping us market the game. At first glance, this probably looks like we’ve lost our minds. I can hear the comments now: “Why would you have a competitor distribute the expansion pack? Are you mad? And can I have some of whatever you’re smoking?”

    Well, we may be nuts, but there is a method to our madness:

    1. SOE has very good reach into the retail world. They can get us good space in thousands of retail shops and that is critical to attracting more players into the game;

    2. SOE also has a great marketing arm, one with years of experience at supporting retail launches of expansion packs, with proven results. We get to take advantage of that experience to give Throne of Destiny some extra oomph! in the marketplace.

    Those are two nice advantages for a first time publisher to have, the equivalent to being dealt wired aces in Hold ‘Em. We plan to ride those aces for all their worth.

    All in all, this is a great deal for the expansion pack. It gives us excellent reach in the retail space, allows us to stretch our marketing budget better while working with a group with proven success. I don’t think we could have done much better on this short of having God personally place the units on the shelf.

    I’m sure there will be some speculation about what all this means or if there is some hidden agenda here, so before the rumors start:
    .
    Turbine is not being bought by SOEThis is strictly a retail distribution and marketing deal, nothing more;

    We’re not moving the games to SOE’s The Station. You’ll still access them through Turbine;

    The Illuminati had nothing to do with this deal. Really. No, really. I’m not kidding, man, you don’t want to go there…

    To sum up, working with SOE on distribution and marketing is a great deal for all of us and a great opportunity to get Throne of Destiny in front of more eyeballs. We’re pretty excited about it and we hope you are, too.

    Yep, tell that to Verrant Interactive. Time will tell, it would be a very interesting buy out if it did happen.

    OK, as if AC ever had good customer service. I can think of maybe ONCE that I actually got a response on a help request in game when MS had it.

    Well, you must ask yourself: Whats in it for Sony?

    And don't say money from sales because lets face it, AC 2's population isn't exactly screaming.

    Sony started a new Publishing Company, not just for Sony (makes me wonder if they are the ones trying to expand their horizons, and why)

    The first line in this press release though will tell you, new company within Sony:

    SONY ONLINE ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES NEW DISTRIBUTION LABEL, RELEASES NEW ASHERON’S CALL TITLES
    posted on 18-Jan-2005

    Station Publishing Brings Turbine's MMORPG Games Back to Retail Channel
    SAN DIEGO, CA – January 18, 2005 – Sony Online Entertainment Inc. (SOE), a worldwide leader in massively multiplayer online (MMO) gaming, today announced the formation of Station Publishing, a new distribution label within the company. Station Publishing will focus on distributing interactive entertainment products licensed from external content providers for the PC and game console market. The first titles due from Station Publishing will be Turbine Entertainment Software's Asheron's Call®: Throne of Destiny™ and Asheron's Call® 2: Legions™.

    "Station Publishing is dedicated to growing the overall Sony Online Entertainment product catalog with titles produced outside of our own studios," said John Smedley, president, Sony Online Entertainment. "This new label gives Sony Online Entertainment the ability to work with talented developers and publishers and to give them access to the high caliber retail and marketing resources that we have developed over the past six years. Turbine's Asheron's Call games are the perfect titles to be the first on this new label. The AC franchise has attracted hundreds of thousands of players to the online medium over the years, and SOE is very happy to be distributing these high quality products."

    "Having Sony Online Entertainment distributing the titles produced and published by Turbine gives us direct access to the strongest retailers in North America," said Jason Bell, executive vice president, Turbine Entertainment Software. "We're excited to see our games get onto store shelves and into the hands of our passionate and loyal players."

    Throne of Destiny is the third installment in the original 3D massively multiplayer online role playing game series Asheron's Call, first launched to critical acclaim in November 1999. In the new expansion pack, players will enjoy a graphics upgrade, a new playable race, the Viamontians, and a challenge to experienced gamers with a new high-level play system that rewards players with skill credits.

    Legions is the first follow-up to the graphically ground-breaking MMORPG Asheron's Call 2: Fallen Kings. Legions will provide players with an ambitious new storyline complete with an extensive array of new content for hours and hours of additional online adventuring. The expansion provides players with a new playable race, the mystical Empyreans, a massive new continent shrouded in mystery and an innovative new hero system.

    Asheron's Call: Throne of Destiny and Asheron's Call 2: Legions are scheduled to hit retail shelves in the first half of 2005.

    Good to hear. It was just something I heard and wanted to know if something big happened I wasn't aware of since I don't subscribe to AC or AC2.

    Thanks for the info all.

    Cool thank you.

    If I remember right Smedley, the person speaking in the interview was the head of VI before the change over. Time will tell, honestly though I think it would be the best thing Turbine could ever have happen to them, being bought out by Sony that is. But thats just my opinion. Will have to see what other companies sign up for Station Publishing anytime soon. It seems to me to be a way to get their foot in the door with other companies.

    Actually Fadeus, you are right, it is a good idea.

    And it may be the way for smaller developers to get their name out via a top company as well :) Nice way to make themselves somewhat competative (smaller ones I mean) in a crazy market.

    SoE advantages:

    - They receive an income from every sells a competitor make.

    - They have first hand data info on their competitor sells and release dates, which allow them to plan accordingly.  The competitor is already vanquished on the publishing aspect and assimilated, only leave the final product as competition, which mean instead of a win/lose situation you grow to a win/stale situation.

    - They improve the credibility of the Sony empire.

    - They improve their faction with Turbine, which may prove an incredible edge in the future in so many ways...they can hire Turbine staff easier should they leave Turbine for any reason, they may encourage leaving members to go to Turbine...they may associate to create others products.  If Turbine find any aspect of their game to be ''to tedious'' to developp, they are likely to knock on SoE door before anyone else.

    - It diversify SoE economics activities, which is a prime directive in Sony.

    I am sure it will benefit Turbine a lot, especially if they want to focus on the product itself rather then on the ''side'' aspects, but dont doubt it, it benefit SoE a lot more.  Short term it benefit Turbine more...long term Sony benefit a lot from this.

    - "Solo is, will always be, the main market. A MMORPG that succeed with little or no solo appeal is doing great considering they are ignoring the main player base.''

    - "If I understand you well, you are telling me until next time. " - Ren

    It's really no different than the phone companies. Ever see those 10-10-321 commercials where they say to dial some series of numbers for a flat calling rate? Do you know who owns those companies offering that? AT&T, MCI, Sprint, etc. Yes, there are some third party companies who buy blocks of minutes at a low rate and spread them out offering those discounts, however, in order to "compete" with those companies, the big guys had to make these smaller companies that do the same thing. Except when they buy the minutes from themselves, it's all internal monies. Although they are selling the minutes at a discounted rate, their profit margins are still higher than selling to a third party vendor who's re-selling the minutes.

    SOE just created a Publishing Company within themselves so that they can now get a piece of the action from the competitors. Before the publishing company, when people purchased competitor products like AC, AC2, Eve, etc, that's "lost revenues" for SOE because people are opting to purchase a competitor product. By becoming the competitors publisher, SOE puts their hand into the wallet of their competitor now by making competing sales count toward SOE profit margins. So they now profit from thier own success as well as the success of their competitors.

    Very smart.
