Comments
its not a mmo its a single player game with optional lan and online features, would be surprised if they added a forum for a game that isnt a mmo.
Diablo is not MMO, and Diablo is not RPG. Diablo is hack'n slash. This site is called www.mmorpg.com and not a www.hack'nslash/withamultiplayermode.com
REALITY CHECK
Epic fail and /facepalm 4 u all
Diablo is and was rpg and its not said if its gonna be mmo or not it has some mmo elements so its more obvious you should inform youreself before u say something lol
I am the punishment of God...
If you had not committed great sins,
God would not have sent a punishment like me upon you

It's not an mmo. That's why it doesn't have a forum here. It's an action rpg with multiplayer.
[MOD EDIT - PLEASE KEEP TO THE TOPIC AND LEAVE THE FLAMING OUT OF IT - ARARIS]
Please, is a talent tree enough to call a game RPG? Is tropico RPG because you actually choose your talents. Is The Sims an RPG because you choose your skills? It is a mindless hack n slash with a multiplayer mode.
REALITY CHECK
Diablo is not an MMORPG or even a RPG at all..
It's a action/loot collection game..
I agree that Diablo is not an MMORGP, but it is a prototypical action RPG. You can choose from many characters and decide the role you are going to play. The loot counts on how you play too. So Diablo looks like a RPG to me. It's just a subsection of the RPG genre.
is diablo 3 not going to be setup like diablo 3? I remember having the option to play in games with people all over the world.
Well It looks like one ..Yes I agree to that ..But that is also where it ends..
All the things that make it "look" like a real RPG is just for show, for example all dialogs are basically pointless, and most players of Diablo will most certainly skip these as they are "well" pointless.
It's an action game, and the most evident way this is shown is the way everything all areas and things you previously have done is back again..all monsters and bosses for example..
Unless you consider a game that can alter stats on an avatar based on experience and/or items a RPG

You talking about GuildWars?
Nahh no D3 forums here because the game is looking too much like Torchlight so Blizzard needs another 10 more years to redo the art work.

And dialogs in an MMO are good right? You read all the text before each quest? What does it do other than nothing? I have read all the dialogue in DII for example, and its good, moves the story forward. What does an MMO text do? same thing.
Your next part of an action game isn't really a fair assumption, because in every MMO things spawn on top of your skull. At least in D1/D2 nothing respawns in the same game.
Is it an MMO not in the least(Guildwars has a forum..so this could be technically be one depending on the final product) but to say its not an RPG is utter non-sense. I can play a character class and RP him with ease and have many different abilities to pick and choose.
Playing a game online with others doesn't make it an MMO. If that was the case, most xbox games are MMOs.

All the dialogue in Diablo is pointless and most of its players will skip it. Hmm that sounds exactly like every other MMO I have ever played. Pointless text files that have nothing to do with the game itself, put in there to help the players fool themselves into thinking they are playing a roleplaying game rather than a brain dead hack n slash game with the words "roleplaying game" advertised in its title.

Yep again that sounds exactly like every MMO I have ever played. Everything you kill respawning moments afterwards and nothing you do ever having any real meaning or impact on anything.......including the badly written story we get in MMOs which was written in a bad attempt to provide context to our repetitive and brainless hack n slash actions.
Unless you consider a game that can alter stats on an avatar based on experience and/or items a RPG
Actually thats precisely all that is needed in a computer game for someone to slap a "roleplaying game" lable on it. All "computer" roleplaying games are nothing more than hack n slash games with text files dumped into them. For this reason Diablo 3 is just as much a roleplaying game as any other MMO. Lets compare it to WoW.
Diablo 3 lets you choose from a selection of classes and then name your character. You have the same choice in WoW. In Diablo 3 you wander from one location to another mindlessly killing monsters. You do exactly the same in WoW. As you play Diablo 3 you find and equip armour and weapons which makes your character more powerful. You also go up levels and unlock new abilities for your class. Yep its exactly the same in WoW. In Diablo 3 there is a story which you can read as you play the game but its just fluff and can easily be ignored by its players. Hmmm sounds like WoW to me. You can play Diablo 3 online with other people anywhere else in the world......just like in WoW.
Sorry to burst the mmo elitists bubble but Diablo 3 is just as much an MMORPG as any other computer game. Its a brain dead hack n slash game sure......but then so is WoW, EQ2, AoC etc. Yeah yeah yeah it doesnt have a big open world where a billion players can all hang out at once and drink virtual tea. Who cares? Like that ever happens anyway. Its a roleplaying game and you can play it online with anyone and everyone. Its an MMO.
Name something exclusive to all other MMOs which Diablo 3 doesnt have......apart from the monthly fee.
And I never said that Diablo doesn't belong on this site, as far as I can tell it's more close to a MMORPG than a RPG or a CRPG.
D3 may even contain more elements that are close to MMO's
I just said that Diablo is no RPG..It's a Action game with some for show roleplaying elements to cover for what it really is..Just like most MMO's

I want to agree with you that most MMO's as well as other (computer/console-)games labeled "roleplaying game" are not really roleplaying games, but it really depends on what meaning you put in it.
Dungeons and Dragons is a roleplaying game, most people say. But isn't that aswell just hack'n'slash (ie "action") with some fluff added? Of course, this both depends on players and the GM, but still?
I won't argue that a lot of games aren't "real" RPGs, but when you play a role in a game isn't the game a roleplaying game? In that case, pretty much any game where you're not playing yourself is a roleplaying game. And that's what some people will stand by.
On the MMO part.. Based on the fact that playing online is optional, I wouldn't say it's an MMO - entirely based on the word "Massively". But hey, people have different views on things, and (almost) no matter what you write on an online forum, (almost) no one will change their views because of you. The line "Too long, didn't read" comes to mind.
I'd rant on, but then I'd go far too off topic, so I'll end it here. (:
Follow my tweet (:

Yes most MMO's use the same systems as Diablo, where dialogs and things you do are pointless
And I never said that Diablo doesn't belong on this site, as far as I can tell it's more close to a MMORPG than a RPG or a CRPG.

Ah I see. Sorry I read too much into your post. In that case I guess we agree
Diablo is not an MMO. You know it's missing the massive multiplayer part.
Blizzard doesn't even consider it a MMO. It's a action rpg. Whoever thinks differently, go to any and every game website and look at the genre of the game.(if they even have it in there list)
Everyone has opinions, but does that make them the universal truth??? NO!

Hmm sort of but not really. Its only a hack'n'slash game if the people want it to be. I've played in a number of well run D&D sessions where there was no combat at all. I assume you are referring to the proper D&D roleplaying game and not just a computer version. The thing is true roleplaying games (ie dice rolling variety) rely almost completely on the players imaginations to work properly. The upside of this is that with the right people involved you can do absolutely anything that you would imagine your character doing (true roleplaying) and a good GM will be able to cause the game world and its characters to react accordingly. This is something we simply cant get out of an MMO. I agree though that there is a heavy emphasis on combat in the D&D rulebook but there are also rules and systems for performing any action.
Mind you I heard that the most recent edition of D&D has become dumbed down and heavily influenced by MMOs which is an incredibly depressing thought. Classes in D&D are now apparently referred to as tank, healer, melee or dps. WTF?!
I won't argue that a lot of games aren't "real" RPGs, but when you play a role in a game isn't the game a roleplaying game? In that case, pretty much any game where you're not playing yourself is a roleplaying game. And that's what some people will stand by.
Yeah I've had this same conversation before and I agree totally. Even Mario Bros could be classed as an rpg! A game doesnt have to have stats, levels and classes to be a roleplaying game.

Hmm kind of but then I can play most MMOs solo. In fact I often do and just completely ignore the fact that other players are running around me. Those players dont have any real impact on the game I am playing (except perhaps influencing what I can buy from an auction house) and I certainly dont need them to play it.....although it depends on the game of course. In those situations to all intents and purposes its the same as playing the game offline. Playing with other people (ie the online aspect) is kind of optional in a way.
I think I do actually view Diablo 3 as an MMO but with the option to play it offline.
I'd rant on, but then I'd go far too off topic, so I'll end it here. (:
Oh go on. Give us a big long rant. This is the best place for it
Yeah but we cant totally rely on the categories in websites can we because thats just based on peoples personal viewpoints. For example I could make a website and insist that World of Warcraft is a shoot em up. Just because its on the web doesnt make it true. Besides Guild Wars is listed as an MMO and people still dispute it.
The thing is Diablo 3 actually does have all the features that classes a game as an MMO.
Does Diablo 3 have a persistent world? No? Then it's not an MMORPG.
How people are so clueless about what qualifies a game to be an MMO when they obviously play the genre, are registered on MMORPG.com, and still don't know what type of games are what.
Like someone on GotFrag saying Counter-Strike is a 3rd person action game. I'd all like, "uhhh no.." which is pretty much how I am here right now.
Diablo isn't even remotely a MMORPG so why would it have a forum? It's also at least a year to two years away, so once again, why forum?
Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.
EAT ME MMORPG.com!
For cryin out loud did anyone in this post even read this part of the OP. It's fairly obvious that he understood Diablo wasn't really a "mmo". Why must you all crucify him for an understandable lack of precision in his language.
Or perhaps you are right and it is this type of careless use of the word 'mmo' which has put such a stain upon the genre...we must attack....geez.
Diablo 3 is not an MMO.
It's an RPG and you can play multiplayer but there is always that pesky MM in the MMORPG. It stands for MASSIVELY Multiplayer. WHich means that there needs to be a lot of people playing at once. I think a good number for this would be somewhere over 20 or so. In Diablo 3 you can maybe have...I dunno...4? tops? It's not a massively multiplayer online role playing game. It shouldn't get a forum. GO talk about it in general gaming.
