Question about showing armor...or not showing it...

I quit AoC in September of 2008 due to upgrade issues with my current PC as well as the guild I was in completely falling apart. That being said,  one of the biggest disappointments I had with the game at the time was with the players' armor (the barbarian's particularly) and how underwhelmed I was with the look of it.

I'm thinking about giving AoC another try but I have a question first: with all the updates and changes made to the game, does AoC have an option like in Lord of the Rings Online where the avatar wears the armor but gives the player the choice not to show it (but still keeps the armor buff)? I want to be politically correct here - before I played AoC the first go-around I did some research about Conan-lore and what I noticed was that between it's scantily-clad warrior-maidens and dancing girls and barrel-chested fighters and rogues the world of Conan showed more skin than Rio de Janiero during Carnival. :D

If any current AoC players could say what's been going on with any improvements armor-wise and if it has contributed any to the overall "look" of Hyborea (as it's portrayed in the Conan books and comics), it would be greatly appreciated.

Muchas gracias!

I've recently started Age of Conan up again. The option of not showing helms or capes is still there.. even though it makes my sword stick out from my back a little more as I wear it, heh.

How high did you get level wise? I've also found gear dependent on area you get it from. I've never really made it high level yet, I have 3 characters in their mid 40's and am slowly progressing, but have still noticed you get stuff from what you kill (minus blues).  Someone higher level than me would be more appropriate to answer, but as a barb Conall's Valley through Field of the Dead, I'm very happy with the way I come out looking. Sanctum of Burning Souls provided me with some nice blue armor that looks good as well.

I got my barbarian to level 79 and as I recall, the grind to get to 80 and do the final destiny quest was horrible. Anyway,  here's what he was wearing when I cancelled my sub:

Now don't get me wrong - the gear does look what a barbarian would wear...in another mmo perhaps.  But from what I've read about the world of Conan this armor is too...predictable?

    TarotMage,

I do not believe that that feature is available.  I played for a while in the beginning, and I recently returned and I have been enjoying myself with the new additions.

If we take it from a different point-of-view, heroes/villains in the books/movies/comic books either did not wear armor because it looked freakin' cool or it would sell the medium because it showed more skin.  I do not think that the cover art on any conan book would be so eye-catching if the buxom lass was all covered up in a robe or armor. Likewise, we have to be fair and give all the lady-fans something worth ogling as well.  We all must understand, for many of them, that their boyfriends/husbands do not look like the King of Aquilonia.

If we take a further step back to the 1982 Conan Movie, wearing armor really depended on the situation. In the beginning, he was a slave and was only allowed to wear what looked cool in the arena.  Later, upon freedom, he could wear whatever he came across, like wolf or wild dog skins. During his raid of the tower, he wore simple cloth so as not to make noise; he was a thief with a big sword.  Much later, when they raided Thulsa Doom's temple, though he previously had new armor that he bought, he went in bare-skinned and painted.  This was for silence and camoflague.  After they stole the princess, he, Subatai, and the wizard all wore armor, since "three stood against many" in the graveyard.  Again, he wore what was available.  At the end of the movie, he was back down to skin and simple clothing for silence, so he could invade Thulsa Doom's temple to assassinate the sorceror.  His people, Cimmerians, generally frowned upon any armor other than hides and leather.  Though available, I would assume that armor would be uncomfortable for a Cimmerian.  Conan's enemies were seasoned warriors.  In their home, his enemies did not wear armor as they were not expecting trouble, and they look like they were recently awoken.  Later, when they attacked the graveyard to reach Conan and his friends, they were all in their full battle armor of choice.

In game, it would not be as realistic if everyone were running around in their skivies, armored like a Paladin.  If they want to appear to be Greek or Cimmerian gods or goddesses, the price would be the lack of armor. When others are fighting them, what we see gives us some idea of what to expect in combat.  I really don't see this as a viable option, since many would run about in the buff and we would not see all the variety of armor available that the designers created for the game.  I for one, like to hang out in the cities between missions, to people watch.  I have seen some really awesome looking armor in Tarantia, Khemi, and Conarch.

    Thorgrimm -

Thank you so much for responding with such a concise, well-written post. It really gave me the opportunity to look at the armor (or lack thereof) question from another perspective. While I still would prefer that it should be up to the player's discretion on how much (or how little) of the armor to show, I understand why AoC's armor looks the way it does.

Again, thank you for your thoughtful response. I don't know exactly when I'll be resubbing AoC but when I do, I hope to see you ingame.

I look forward to it.  See you at your Tavern of Choice.  I was visiting the Taverns in Khemi, and they have a fun atmosphere.

most people hide cloak and helm. So do I, I think it looks better.

Personally, I love the armor look on Barb :)

You know I always did think that there should be some buff for "going in the buff" like Conan did on many occasions. He always wore thin to no armor, except in very rare occasions, to keep a more stealthy profile. I think that having heavier armor should decrease your agility, while the opposite should be in effect. The less armor, the less encumbered. LOL
