It appears that this assumed release date is based on Gamestop and Amazon.com announcing this as the release date for pre-orders of the game. Despite what the articles say, this does not appear to be coming directly from Atari or Cryptic.
Gamestop has had this date for at least a month. Stormshade on the official forums says this date is NOT official. Of course, the marketing department over there seems to operate in its' own little world, so maybe they just jumped the gun, but it's highly irresponsible for them to announce a release date of a game that JUST went into CB.
Unless Cryptic themselves announces the release date i remain skeptical.

All my opinions are just that..opinions. If you like my opinions..coolness.If you dont like my opinion....I really dont care. Playing: ESO, WOT, Smite, and Marvel Heroes
But I've seen release dates listed for games at Amazon change fairly frequently. They rarely remain the same for long.
And even if Febuary 2nd is the actual release date... yeah, there is no way they can go from closed beta to release in the next four months. Its going to be pushed back.
I don't pay any attention to Gamestop. But I've seen release dates listed for games at Amazon change fairly frequently. They rarely remain the same for long. And even if Febuary 2nd is the actual release date... yeah, there is no way they can go from closed beta to release in the next four months. Its going to be pushed back. So I'm not buying this release date either.
Don't be so positive about Cryptic not being able to release a game 4 months after they started CB. May I inform you that they have been working on this game for less than 2 years and they are already in CB. The start to CB has been the fastest for a major game in years.
"We're happy to share with you Star Trek Online's official release date: February 2, 2010, in North America, and February 5, 2010, in Europe. Mark your calendars, and we'll see you in 2010!"
Which makes it even more sad that for the last year or so there was a thread pinned to the top of the official forums clearly stating that there was no official release date and that when there was one it would be announced on the official site first... and yet we heard about it from a third party first.
If Cryptic can't even keep their promises now what makes anyone think they will be able to do it after launch?
Sad part is that after 30 days the typical people come out with the, "Omg, this game has failed. The funeral is approaching. Omg I can't believe I bought this game. Star Wars will pwn this game...ect ect ect.."
Nice to see that STO is coming out fairly soon. Sad part is that after 30 days the typical people come out with the, "Omg, this game has failed. The funeral is approaching. Omg I can't believe I bought this game. Star Wars will pwn this game...ect ect ect.." It never ends....
Are you kidding? We already have the typical people saying "OMG, this game has failed."

Oh yeah, we can never forget about those who say FAIL before a game even launches. I somehow get the feeling that they are very sad people, but it's ok....I feed off their misery
The game won't "fail" in that it will be closed but as is the norm for major MMORPG releases now it will see an initial surge in players after launch and then drop like a rock.
Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity.
Very interesting they can confirm a date to launch the game, but still say they don't have the bugs worked out enough to support all of the people who purchased COs lifetime/6mo subs. Nor can they give an estimated date on when they might be able to.
The game may not fail, but right now its not looking good.
Not sure about the lawsuits ... hopefully they're smart enough to realize the disaster that the Trials of Obi Wan caused and offer a full rebate to anyone that doesn't get into the beta by a certain date. Otherwise, sucks to be the unknown number of people who get in the day before open beta with a "See, we TOLD you we'd get you in for a first look. Thanks for boosting our CO #s for all eternity!! MuhahahHA"
Im a big ST fan and i am waiting to see this game, but in truth i must say im waiting for a disappointment. I just dont trust Cryptic can pull the true essence of what a ST MMO should be.
Only time will tell, im definately aproaching it with an open mind.
Happy the launch is out of range with Cataclysm, so I can enjoy both. Frankly the game can't come soon enough as it will launch in a world of people dying to play something else. I don't expect anything Blizzard quality like, but I don't care. Just running around in ST for a few months will be enough for me. I hope it will be in a playable form, that's all I am asking really this time. Any other expectations can only lead to frustrations.
Yeah, should at least keep you busy enough till cataclysm comes out.....hopefully lol.
I find this to be rather interesting. 3.5 months to go, no Closed Beta has started, yet there still isnt much venom flying around. I suppose the usual .. well.... trolls are busy at the Aion boards.
They will get here in time, though.
Frankly, I am not sure what to think of this. Games with super-short betas have failed, as have games with long ones, even those with multiple steps of closed and open beta.. and even those already in release somewhere else on this world do not look very pretty at this time.
So I suppose beta time is not very valuable, or rather, not very important.
What is kind of saddening, I ll admit, is how many see this as a snack-in-between MMO, hell-bent from the start to never let it be more than that. I realize its the realistic point of view, as most people are either looking for the next big thing (tm), or are just taking a few weeks off WoW every time an MMO launches, but truth be told, this is part of the problem that is eroding this genre, and its chances at a new great game, daily.
STO is certainly not made to be a few-months game, and no MMORPG can be made at decent quality that aims to hold for 1, maybe 2 months until the next one releases. Feeding a cycle like that is just going to cause more and more slow deaths of games, with more and more willingness to just go, copy a cheap WoW knockoff and be done with it, hyping it up for the first 2 months and then letting it die.
The industry is not going to sit there and keep making games at good quality, 15 bucks a month level that we get to try out, chew up, spit out and move on. They ll start trying to make money, actually they probably already are, out of this behaviour by overselling, overmarketing and intentionally underperforming, just to grab out 50 bucks for the box and the subscriptions they can get, never actually intending to make a real, lasting game.
Its a lose-lose for us gamers.

This should be a GREAT game. I am excited to hear about it.
Since the engine is the same as Champions Online, there should be a lot fewer post-release bugs as Champions has given it a respective burn-in time.

With less than two years of development time. People better be prepared for dissapointment and set their expectations extremely low.

For those that are interested, it clearly says in this interview they are targeting Open Beta for January, and a release sometime in March.

Although they can't say it, they have a deadline and are simply rushing to meet it.
The OP is correct...

Only thing I get from this at this point is if all these invites for closed beta don't come out, I see a big lawsuit coming.
"The monster created isn't by the company that makes the game, it's by the fans that make it something it never was"
Cryptic has officially confirmed the release date as 02/10/10 on the STO web site. Gamestop is officially taking pre orders.

I was pleasantly surprised by the date...figured an spring/summer launch.
