When TSO was still an idea residing in Will Wright's head, that was exactly what TSO was supposed to be. Obviously, it didn't end up that way. I see that as neither good nor bad. TSO still turned out to be a great concept in its current form. Mr. Wright's original concept was good, but just doesn't lend itself to much in the way of interactive gameplay. Ć'est la Vie. The only problem with the current manifestation is that offline veterans get disappointed that there is no Rosebud, and that does stifle the creativity a bit.
As you probably know, however, we recently got a new city - Dragon's Cove - which proved that the game mechanics are open-ended enough to support cities with differing economical structures (that people quickly figured out how to defeat the hardcore settings of DC is another subject for another time). What this means - as confirmed by TSO's lead developer - is that it is absolutely possible to create a city with a sandbox economic structure. Right now, they've got their hands full with Betaville, which represents an extreme departure from TSO's standard mechanics; but once they get that ironed out, I'm willing to bet they'd entertain the idea of creating a sandbox city IF there is enough of a loud voice expressing support for it. If you haven't already done so, I suggest heading over to the Stratics message board and make your presence known in the Suggestions forums. I would also leave a post in City Hall linking to your thread in Suggestions, to draw other people to it. Personally, I think a sandbox city is an outstanding idea - as long as there are no simoleons that can be transferred to any non-sandbox cities.
As for your point about objects: I agree - to a point. TSO is a free-download game, with a nominal subscription fee. On the flip side of that, The Sims cost an average of $35 when it first came out, and every expansion cost an average of $25 when they came out. When you factor in the cost of buying The Sims and all seven of its expansions when released, you will have spent $210. It would take nearly two years of monthly subscription fees for one TSO account to equal that. I will agree, though, that some more objects - particularly from Makin' Magic - would be nice. However, there's one thing to consider: Out of all the objects available in TSO's catalog, less than 10% are in widespread use. Think about that. If it doesn't offer max greening, nobody's interested. TSO clearly was not designed to adequately satisfy the instant-gratification types we have in our society these days.
I agree with you wholeheartedly about the lack of custom content being a major issue for TSO. It's been discussed ad nauseaum on Stratics, but there are two major issues with CC that nobody has figured out how to get around: The issue of bandwidth overhead for real-time object downloads, and the issue of potential copyright infringement. The latter can be managed by hiring a staff to screen object submissions - but how likely is EA going to do that? I mean, come on - if the game doesn't have John Madden or NFL somewhere on it, EA couldn't care less! There is nothing that can be done to get around the bandwidth issue that would be amenable to dial-up users.
Some people see TSO as "playing the same game over and over", but to a vast majority of the active players we have, it is anything but. Every time I log in, I see a lot of creative minds around. I rarely spend any time skilling or making money - choosing instead to hang out with these creative minds. Trust me - as long as you can get around many people's simoleon-centric lifestyles - there is a lot of fun to be had! Just a few minor examples: I once made a memorial for a friend who couldn't be on for a few months - complete with writing her name on my front lawn in pee! Another friend of mine turned my whole lot into a huge lake using nothing more than a porta-potty! Interhogan has a complete Simball league, with expansions spreading to many of the other cities! Dan's Grove has a whole neighborhood full of loonies dedicated to committing at least one act of random -- randomness once a day! (I'll never forget the time we went randomly lot-hopping, speaking only in binary, parading around their lots - literally!). Alphaville has full-fledged TV game shows! There are so many examples of unique creativity in TSO that I can't possibly list them all - it just depends on what your own goals are for the game. Obviously if all you want to be is rich, the game will get old really fast. TSO is a game that forces you to think outside the box - often with unpredictable results.
Ahhh Jersey, yeah I know TSO has been a discussion in guild chat for some time, what can you expect with a guild made up pretty much off all ex TSO and current TSO players...lol
Kat I agree with a lot you said, the game comment I made was in regard to the pizza, code etc, the game would have benefited a lot from just more and different type of social games, it would have kept interest up and added new content, which is another thing that TSO is lacking, new content, the rate of content was so slow in the year that I was there it was ridiculous, and when they did put in new content it was stuff that had about 5 mins of play value, ie the spotlight, I know things have been added since I left, but it still seems that TSO is not adding the type of content that would have keep people playing, more social type games and objects, in a social game you need this, funny hats and shoes is all well and good, but it is the type of thing that loses peoples interest fast, look how many people love pizza still, if they would have added games like this constantaly TSO might have kept a lot of people.
All MMOGS' have the problem of content, just the bad thing about TSO is that EA has slashed it's budget so much that 2 devs is not enough to keep up on good content and development of future content, I know TSO has added things like new cities and some objects, but I wonder is this new content or content that was in the works for a long time that just was never finished? And they are just finishing up what was already in the works and releasing it, if that is true how long before the old things that were just waiting for finishing is done, will 2 devs be enough to keep new content coming, or will pizza etc be it till the plug is eventually pulled.
I was a big fan of the offline sims, I remember reading the forums and people wanted The Sims online, but as I said they wanted a real time enviroment to show off their creations and be social, EA wanted a successful MMOG, so instead of giving the people what they wanted a online game where people could show off their artistic talent that they shared on the exchange they made it into some sort of game where it's not creativity but earning simoleans is the goal, TSO should have done what Second Life did, let players create and sell their creations, lots of social events, let people go wild and build their dream houses, give them all the tools needed to do this and maybe TSO would have taken off more, will never know.
I'm not sure how many devs are on the TSO team. I do know of the two who've frequently interfaced with the player community, but I have the sneaking suspicion there are more than just those two.
Very recently, EA did something that makes me at least a little hopeful that EA has plans for TSO's improvement - or at least its continuation: MaxisSahara was recently hired to fill the role vacated by Tigger last year as Community Representative - and she's hit the ground running! Perhaps it's nothing; but given EA's reputation, I really can't see them adding to the staff of a game they plan on killing - so I'm hopeful and confident that help is on the way!
TSO clearly was not designed to adequately satisfy the instant-gratification types we have in our society these days.
They just didn't consider the kind of competition that would spawn needing to have greening go as fast as possible.
I've tried to change my houses up a bit as best I can without sacrificing green as much as possible. Usually it takes some careful attention to details. Like instead of going for an expensive dining room table and chairs I might go for the cheap ones (since most sims get comfort while they sleep anyways). Going for a slightly different toilet (even if it does clog up a bit more often). Little things like that don't affect game play for my guests a whole lot but can help make my lot look just a bit different.
One of the best lots to try this out in is a store. no one's there to work so the few that do green don't really care what greening facilities are to be had.
I seriously think objects should be upgradable. I'm just waiting for the day when I can have top greening with blow up furnature!

Wow - when you said on the Stratics boards you were coming over here to lobby for TSO, you weren't kidding, Kathryn. Good luck with it - looks like you have your work cut out for you with TattooedGirl, though.
The fact is, TSO IS garbage - to some. To others, it is the best online game around. That is the way of the world, so why fight about it? Clearly, Kathryn enjoys TSO - so did I, for almost a year. Now I enjoy SWG, CoH and WoW, a year from now, it may be Tabula Rasa or whatever.
Threads like this never cease to amaze me - just because you hate (or love) a game, why purpose does it serve to flame those who do not agree with you? Just because TSO no longer interests me does not make it a bad game, it just makes it a game I once enjoyed and no longer do.
Mind you, threads where you discuss, calmly, rationally, the relative strengths and weaknesses of a game ARE useful, to players and hopefully to developers. Threads like this one, though - I really am at a loss for what purpose they serve.

Pfffft! I've dealt with worse trolls than her!
I do agree with you that TSO is not for everyone. Most people associate MMORPG's with hack-and-slash fantasy games. Indeed, most of them are! TSO is a completely different type of MMORPG. Instead of roaming around killing things, you go from house to house building friendships, defining goals, and meeting them. It is a truly social game, whereas most of the others are adventure-based. You can solo MOBS all day long in Everquest or Lineage, but you're not going to get anything accomplished in TSO by going it alone.
I used to play Everquest, and I beta-tested Lineage II. I loved both games, but TSO continues to hold more appeal for me.
Actually, TattooedGirl, Katheryne is the best poster at keeping just below the Rules of Conduct. The only person insulting anything here is you.
I am one of the frequent bitchers on the message boards. I am actually quite content with the game and what it has to offer, but when I go to the City Hall thread, I demand answers just because it is supposed to be a place to get them. I'm not exactly sure.. I bitch about things that dont really bother me. Maybe it is just because I want to see this game reach its full potential.
D/s life style? I'm sorry, but every person who has this lifestyle keeps it to THEMSLEVES and do not force it upon anyone else. And no, in the 2 years of playing, nobody has asked me to cyber with them. Unless you go to romance lot, looking for cyber sex, you're not going to find it....

"full of nothing but a bunch of cyber sex control freak
Beta Snobs
Pizza Nazi's"
Boy if you couldnt be any further from the truth, I have never once met a Cyber Sex Control Freak, and if you'd spend 1 minute and talk to a Beta player you'd realize how experienced they are at this game and how nice and willing they are to help everyone. Also about the pizza Nazi, you show me one person in this game who plays pizza and is "A member of the National Socialist German Workers' Party, founded in Germany in 1919 and brought to power in 1933 under Adolf Hitler." BTW I am a bear in TSO in all my cities, I"ve also been robots nerds, bugs, and any other thing immagionable at one point and time, and not one, not ONE time have I ever been made fun of. If you hate the game so much why are you hanging around Stratics so much, its narrow minded people like you that turn people off to the game, not the game itself.
I'd just wanna say that in these forums its people opions right, if tatoo wants to say that she think the game stinks then let her, i mean if everyone were to agree and every thing there wouldnt be alot of point in naming it "discussion" now would there, i know this is off the point but just think about it, espexially those who say "your trrying to attack us" when its just tatoo girl's opion
Originally posted by TattooedGirl I like how one member from www.stratics.com posted this site over there complaining about what a low rating TSO got and now they've all scrambled over here and made accounts to say how great TSO is. But yet when I visited their boards there was nothing over there but complaining about lag, complaining about new clothes, complaints that nobody wanted free will and now that they have freewill, complaints about it not being this or not being that. Complaints about the advance skilling, complaints about not getting anymore clothes, complaints that the developers don't listen to them, complaints about crafting costing so much....Go to the stratics site, Click on City Hall, you'll see all the complaints that the developers don't listen to them at all and now they are even demanding a meeting on IRC. I've played the damn game, for almost 8 months straight. It's aweful. Everyone's always AFK skilling or making money. Sure, there's the occasional fun house that pops up but dosn't last very long. And AV is full of nothing but a bunch of cyber sex control freaks with their D/s lifestyle. How can you even bring that lifestyle into a game like this, isn't it rated Teen? Then you have the Beta Snobs, who think they know everything and are better then everyone, oh and lets not forget the Pizza Nazi's who's whole life online is devoted to that damn Pizza Machine. The only interesting picks for a character on this game are robots, zombies or bears. I tried all of the above with negative results. It seems that if you don't pick the long blond hair look, then your pretty much an outcast that people make fun of and call names. Lets see, what has Maxis given you lately? Oh Freewill that has so many bugs people are dropping like flys from the game. Roaches and mice, Yeah they serve a grand purpose don't they? Accessories like a big Grand Poobah Hat, sure it's fun, but started out as a newbie can you afford the 32k to get it? Nope. How about advanced skilling? Yeah, I want to sit for 32 hours straight in a house where everyone is AFK and skill till my eyes bleed and my brain starts to shrink from lack of anything interesting going on, sure. It's a big over priced glorified chat room with a bunch of lonely housewives and people that are so afraid to be who they are in real life, they join this game to do it. Cyber sex runs rampant in this game. There's no point to it. The only jobs that are available are the worst and one some people can't even play because of lag issues. The pay for these jobs are to low. Not to mention the hours needed to skill to get ahead and the friends you need to have aquired to get a promotion. In conclusion, it's a horrible game. The developers don't listen to the people who are paying them. The updates are few and far between and usually consist of something that was never asked for. If you want to play a game where you sit for hours on end not communicating with anyone and the only type of intelligent life out there is some guy who just Im'd you and asked you if you like teabagging, then sure this games for you. I'd write more about this game, but right now I have to go take an enormous crap, I think I'll use my TSO Cd's to wipe my ass, since there not worth anything else then that.
This is her opinion, she can say whatever the hell she wants. The rest of you need to calm the hell down with all your "our" community nonsense, go outside you friggin goons, TSO is not your real life, it is a game. A game that does suck I must add.

No, that was her directly insulting and digging on TSO players. Thats not an opinion. You want to post a good well thought out opinion to debate, cool, go for it. I will gladly discuss it with you. If you want to run your mouth, talk down to others and flame then deal with the consequences.
I think you need to learn the difference between voicing an opinion and just showing complete disrespect for others. The OP might have been fine had he/she not run their mouth stereotyping the people that play TSO.
And your right, TSO is not real life, its just a game. So why did you bother to come voice yourself if its not any good to you and you don't care about it?

I don't like TSO, but I don't think its garbage....I still have it installed on my computer.
However.....TSO is not a game, its a chat room with extra features. If chatting is your thing then TSO would prob be the best thing since yahoo, but for someone who is more serious about playing a "game" TSO is mediocre at best.
You have to keep in mind that this is a game were isntead of killing things and players, it is a community were you meet alot of people. To me, I find The Sims Online an enjoyable game were it gives me a break from the ol' Hack-N-Slash style RPG games, and I find it way better then Second Life. So this is a game that you either like it or don't like it.
I Say TSO is the first online game ive played i find it very social and for only people who like to socialize....this isnt a RPG where you slahs and gash crap but a place to acctually get to know your fellow sims or avatars...
Even tho there is no Custom content maybe in the future but atm there isnt it still is great...
I have made so many good friends... I talk to some of them on the phone even... I swear, had this been just an ordinary kill people, and steal their money game.. I would never have made the kinds of friends I have.. if/when this game is ever cancelled, I will be taking those friendships into other games.
I played this game a very long time ago, when it was just out of beta. Oddly enough, I played on the test server, called "Test Center" appropriately enough. The game was so full of life, and just about every player role-played their characters.
I was 13 when I played this game and was elected as the servers very first, "Police Cheif" with about 150 votes out of 200. What a blast it was back then! I have to admit though, I'd be ashamed to admit it to anyone who ever mentioned anything about this old game in real life. Good times, thanks for giving me something to occupy my childhood with EA!

Simball in CC - Simball in AV
Do you have what it takes?
In my opinion a lot of the instant gratification are still there.
They are the payouters... the "I buy 10 accounts to be #1" The money buyers of ebay.
It's the people who were disapointed that the game was built around the intstant gratification people.
The people who wanted more from TSO such as CC and detailed games, that have left the game.
In my opinion of course, I have no solid data to back this up.

"What happened to you, Star Wars Galaxies? You used to look like Leia. Not quite gold bikini Leia (more like bad-British-accent-and-cinnamon-bun-hair Leia), but still Leia nonetheless. Now you look like Chewbacca." - Computer Gaming World
k,
I don't like TSO, but I don't think its garbage....I still have it installed on my computer.
However.....TSO is not a game, its a chat room with extra features. If chatting is your thing then TSO would prob be the best thing since yahoo, but for someone who is more serious about playing a "game" TSO is mediocre at best.
accutly i never played this game, but it looks kinda cool to me
I Say TSO is the first online game ive played i find it very social and for only people who like to socialize....this isnt a RPG where you slahs and gash crap but a place to acctually get to know your fellow sims or avatars...

Don't necro up posts about games that have been canceled for long, make a new nostalgia thread instead, please.
4 year necros make me smile.

Every thread in this TSO forum is older than jesus himself. I didn't necro anything, I simply made the first post in this forum since several years ago.
I do believe you win at reading, sir. I forgive you.
