1. This is one lame ass excuse i seem to hear over and over. The fact is, this is NO excuse. Its the people who love blizzard just because of the name who give this excuse. My reasons for why this is not an excuse: From your reply, I dont think you have ventured into the corporate world. Being new and inexperienced sure as hell isnt an excuse in a competitive market. Being new and inexperienced is what gets you smashed by leaders in the corporate world. Where i work, if i made mistakes and held up the process for how fast customers are put through the system, there wouldnt be anybody saying "oh hes new, give him a few months to get experienced". The fact is that when you enter a market, such as the MMORPG market, you should have the knowledge that makes it look like you have some experience.
The problem is the SERVER not the game. Blame the company that made the servers for their crappy service . Is it Blizzard's fault that Teh Uber Inc. or whatever didnt make high performance servers? Blizzard didnt have very much money (a little less than 3 million) when this project first started, so they had to tone down something. Blizz WAS NOT expecting 600k people to go and join in the holiday season, they were expecting a bit more than WC3, but not as much as EQ made in their first year of sales.
2) I dont get why i keep hearing this reply. I wouldnt be paying montly if i didnt want to play this game. No i dont want to play another game, I give them $15 a month so that i can actually log on and play when i want to. I tell you if i heard a blizzard dev/mod tell me to "go play another game while we fix our crap servers that you pay us for" i actually might go on a killing spree. Thats a BS reply.
THAT is a BS reply. If have such a problem with something going wrong that you would go on a killnig spree, you need serious mental help. You wanna know WHY you keep getting the reply?! It's because you're SUPPOSED to have a back-up game to play or even watch TV. Pretty soon, your already thick-headed linear thinking will go completely flat line as you power-play through the game thinking it's real life. The 15 a month is to upgrade and maintain servers, which Blizzard is working on (see the maintenance cycles? see how long they're going down? they're upgrading them for higher populations ). You're not paying them for flawless service, you're paying for the usage of their servers. You can go and play this offline if you want, just change some code here and there and change it into a normal RPG. It's not illegal as long as you dont sell it or give it to anyone, or let anyone know how you did it. At least that'll give you something to do besides screaming at your monitor and bashing your keyboard because you checked the server lists and found that yours happened to be offline.
3) Its not that people dont do other stuff, such as reading a book or going outside. In my case, I go to classes 5 days a week from 9-3 pm. Then usually i go to work after classes until 6 or 7, and usually one day on the weekend for 5 hours. In my spare time I do other stuff such as read, hang out with friends, watch a movie, or play games. The thing that irritates me is that whenever i decide to use my spare time to play WoW, the servers are either down for "emergency maintnance, or they are lagged or screwed up somehow.
If you dont like how the game works (or doesnt work in this case). Then do something else. Emergency maintenance does not happen very much, it's usually the weekly cycle they have that lasts 6 hours. I'm very sure they purposely do maintenance or lag up the servers just for you, so you could have a really bad day .
Its not just these problems. Recently i had my highest lvl char crashing my computer every time i tried to log onto him. So there we go, had to delete that char, there goes $15 and a months worth of time down the drain.
What is your time worth? You decided to play the game. It's completely virtual, so anything you do there WILL NOT, i repeat, WILL NOT affect your life in any way unless you let it bother you mentally. But still... WHOA!!! $15 worth of time! OMGOMG!
You didnt have to delete your character, you just send them an email about what's wrong and the server you're on, they'll send a canned answer back with the right thing to do within a few days. My highest char did the same thing, but I didnt delete it... so now i have my char working fine.
Recently and some what in the past, the servers have been packed. So i wait in a 500 + person line, play for a little bit, and then get kicked out by the server. So....now im supposed to wait in an even larger line to play and get kicked out?
What server are you on?! Wait.. no.. just a sec... lets go back to the "doing something else with our time" line. Try making a char on ANOTHER SERVER? Nahh, of course not, you put all of your $15 worth of time into to, so by waiting even LONGER, you save time by not doing something else even slightly productive.
In all honesty i really love this game, but I find it irritating when excuses such as "they are new to MMORPG's" or "go play another game" are given in an attempt to mute the problems with this game.
It was not an attempt to mute all problems, because SOME PEOPLE are too dense to realize facts. They ARE new to MMOs, and you SHOULD have something else to do when you get bored of it the servers are down.
The official WoW boards are down now as well, so I can't provide any links, but basically, they posted yesterday or today on the forums that the purpose for the 16 hour maintenance on the West Coast servers was to replace the servers with "the best technology available". They also admited, which I had mused about on those forums, that they screwed something up in the set up and configuration of everything, which is why we aren't seeing the improvements the new hardware should have offered.
The wierd thing is that since launch, the East Coast servers (they used to be listed by timezone, they no longer are) have been performing wonderfully since launch, with higher loads than the West Coast servers. There has been some debate on this, some insist that all the servers are located on the same site in Virginia, which I'm pretty sure is NOT the case. When the storm damage hit that server location during beta, it was made clear it was the East Coast servers and that the damage was minor. Anyway, it would make zero sense if they really were all located in one place but just the ones originally designated as West Coast have been FUBAR, so I'm going to assume that the people who say they are physically on opposite coasts are correct.
That being said, the West Coast servers have been sub par since launch. The problems have persisted and even drove Blizzard to spend some of that huge profit on brand new top of the line servers, only to screw things up during the installation and configuration! I think knowing these facts, the biggest point of blame I have for Blizzard is that they have not replaced/upgraded the factor that seems to really be the cause of the problems, their West Coast server techs!
Someone must not have been really paying attention in college or payed someone to take their certs for them, because it's unfathomable to me that these problems could be ongoing for almost two months and we finally get the admission from Blizzard that it's a configuration problem, rather than a hardware one. Some one out there f'd up and has continued to F up. Tonight, the same servers are down again. In response to the article quoted in this thread, they have spun it as "scheduled maintenance", rather than "emergency maintenance", but of course this is BS, because no one was alerted to it ahead of time and no one would schedule maintenence in peak play time. Now, there is an updated message on login that says "Due to an issue discovered during maintenance" that the servers will not be coming up as scheduled and they have no ETA on when they will come up!
I'm a compassionate person. I always give people a second chance and hate to see anyone get fired. However, for goodness sake, I think it's time Blizzard fire most of the West Coast server people, espescially the people in charge and get someone in there that actually knows what they are doing. Since the East Coast servers are running flawlessly and pretty much have been right along, at the very least they should fly the best people from the East Coast to the West Coast and have them set up and reconfigure the new servers.
Sorry for the rant. I love the game, I've played most of the major MMORPGs over the last few years and WoW is by far my favorite. However, I don't understand how this situation was ever allowed to go on as long as it has. If it were all the servers, then I would be wondering what kind of problems Blizzard might be having with the server side code and the network and node structure they designed to handle the game. In some ways, that would be a worse situation, because you would have to wonder if these flaws are something that can be fixed with out some great time and effort. However, it really seems that this continuing problem, only effecting half the servers, is the result of continued incompetance. Not only where these servers not correctly configured from launch, but they have a working model in the East Coast servers of how to successfully configure servers to run the game and they can't even find a way to duplicate it on the FUBAR servers!
Comments from EU beta testers seem to suggest that the servers over there, just like the East Coast US servers, are running fine. The Korea launch was a day or two ago, once again, no word on server problems. That's three server teams who have successfully set up and run WoW servers and one server team that seems incapable of doing so. The problem and thus the solution is pretty obvious, which makes me more frustrated that this problem is still ongoing.
Oh, the official forums are up now. To support the contention that tonight's "scheduled maintenance" was not scheduled, notice that the post about there being scheduled maintenance tonight was made after the actual maintenance was already under way:
I find that insulting. As someone who loves the game and has been very patient to date with all the server problems, I find the attempt to spin tonights outage as scheduled, rather than emergency, to just be a slap in the face.
The following 20 realms will be coming down for scheduled maintenance at 6:00 PM PST:
When the realms are ready to come back up, well be doing a staggered restart, bringing up a few at a time while monitoring performance closely. The total downtime for these realms should last approximately 2 hours.
The reason for the maintenance is that we have identified that one of the problems causing multiple disconnects revolves around the boat system in the game. Specifically, the boat that travels between Menethil Harbor and Auberdine was causing errors that impacted stability for the entire realm.
When the realms come back online, this boat will be replaced by NPCs who can teleport players between these two locations. Once this fix is implemented, we will analyze performance under live conditions and from that point roll out the fix across all realms. We will continue to investigate other unrelated performance issues, but we believe this measure will help improve stability for our players until we can fully resolve the boat issue and place it back in the game. Thank you for your patience during this time, and we look forward to seeing you back in-game! Fai Senior Game Master World of Warcraft
Notice that this wasn't even to fix the configuration errors for the servers, which I thus have to assume they still are not capable of doing. Instead, they have found a problem was being caused by one of the boat routes! This problem does not exist on the other servers, yet rather than properly configuring the new servers, the "fix" attempt was to replace the boat trip in question with NPCs that can teleport you for free. A hack instread of an actualy fix, during prime time, in scheduled maintenance that was not really scheduled. Nice guys.
Now, we get:
We have encountered some unexpected issues during maintenance of the 20 servers that have been taken down. As a result, we are continuing to work on these servers to alleviate any further problems. When we are in a position to reliably open these servers to the public again, we will do so. We apologize greatly for the inconvenience this may cause you, but we must be comfortable in returning these realms to service. Thank you for your continued patience. Senior Game Master World of Warcraft
In other words, the hack either didn't fix the problem or made server performance and stability even worse! The wording makes me think this could be something that could take days, rather than a couple hours, to resolve.
I don't know what the situation with the servers is, as far as in house or outsourced, but if there is a third party contractor running the servers in question, I think they need to use what ever escape clause exists and find a better provider! Of course, if it is in house, I stand by my original post that people need to be fired. I wonder if any one on the West Coast server tech teams has ties with SOE? At least corporate espionage would make some sense. hehe
This will pass. Anarchy online was completely unplayable for months after initial release (I was there) and has gone on to be pretty successful. Blizzard has a superior product and alot more money.
Personaly, I'm glad I cancelled my account before I was charged so I could play EQ2 for awhile. Hopefully, they will have everything working well again soon.
Exactly, Here you go Fiontar, Making a big hype out of something you really shouldnt be making a big hype out of.. Everyone know the x-amount of servers have been having some trouble. Woop Dee Doo, Just as Dyrtt has just posted, It will all pass. Give them some time! We understand your upset. Blizzard understands your upset, and if you believe, God himself, knows your upset. Im sure your maker appologizes, Blizzard has appologized and given us/you additional time, and everyone on this website...... ok I have just appologized ( sorry .. ) for your obvious anger on "Blizzards Servers". So now just give it some time, and all will work out in the end

I think it's BS. Lotsa people say it's all gonna be ok (cause it's Blizzard).
Man if Mythic or SOE was doing this sheet, you'd be writing congressmen and hiring attorneys. Lucky for me I found WoW to be utterly crapola, so only my friends have had to deal with this launchy nightmare.
Do you even play WoW? Thats not the point, but how do you know what server I play on? I didnt say my server doesnt go down at all, but that the server done go down all the time! Yeah ok, so ( new to me ) some server went down last weak for a whole day....and?.... How many servers was it? 1.2?.... 5?....
22 servers were down for an 18-hour scheduled maintenance last thursday, but they actually ended up being down for more than a day. Either you don't play on one of these servers, or you didn't play that day. If you don't play on one of those servers, then chances are your not experiencing the problems others are.
Also, it doesnt matter what I say because everyone and their grandma who visits this site, and reads its forumns knows your the greatest Devils Advocate in all of this website. So no matter what I say, or what anyone says, you'll have some insult/comment that neither compliments that person, nor degrades that person. Its very annoying!
Oh C'mon now.. I'm not the greatest Devil's Advocate. :P
"You're right, they do have a "CRAP load" of people on servers, but that shouldn't be an excuse for their servers always being down."......................It shouldnt?
No, it shouldn't be. The fact is I pay the same amount of money to play on a lag-free server, regardless of how many other people are playing, and I'm not getting that lag-free server.
So maybe instead of "bashing" me for "bashing whiners", maybe you should point out some of the many good things Blizzard has done with this game, or are planning to do, or things you find good about the game instead of taking someone's post and commenting on something someone should have done a long time ago.
I need to offset the amount of rabid fanboys on these forums.

First of all, if your friends canceled their accounts because of this, their ignorant as hell, and probably need to be deleting them, because i hate playing with ignorant people. Furthermore, I dont think the problem will ever be "ok" because the developer of the game is Blizzard. I say its goign to be ok because Its what all games do. Give it a few months for every mmo I've played has had its down times and rough spots the first few months of release. Hell, take for example AC2. 5 months into the game and chat wouldnt work every night! Every single night, chat would be down and you were forced to run around and kill without looking for a group. This is only the first few months of Blizzards campaign, as we should all expect to see some problems.
Im not even goign to go in detail about (some big developer ) and ( talking to your congressman). For one, your attorney would laugh at you, and would probably pay you to get up there and make a fool of yourself. Glad you found the game "crapola", I wouldnt want to play with you anyway, specially since, you gave the game what... a week?... a month? well, couldnt be more than 3 months, so your statement on the game being "crapola" is completely bunk.

Well for me I think wow is doing good. Whats that phrase shit happens? I have played ao for almost 2 years and they still had issues since day one that effected every pet class Pet pathing. At least 3 mmpg I can think of that has been live over a year and still have huge issues. Wow went from releasing there first mmpg into that and selling 500k copies first day. They have had alot of success with there other games. I cant even think of a game that has even near there subscribers as they do. I am on Blackrock and it is one of the worst I know of. Hard for me to goto another server with 7 char over 28 lvl and all have crafting above 180ish. I will stick with it. I do crash alot, lag and server down. That is the only real issues I have had. They went from running a free little server for there rpg games to an all paying subscribers monster mmpg. If I take out the server issues. For the 4 mmpg release I have been part of and there beta this is the best release so for for me.
I read on some forums (more than 3) about the answer for the game client crashing. They mentioned that most chipsets are outdated and causing crashing. I did have a pent 3 with 2 gigs of 133 ram. I crashed all the time. I needed to upgrade and can do it cheap to. I went and bought a pent4 3.2 with 1 gig of 3200 ram. For 4 days (about 17 hours game play) crashed only 1. This will not solve all the crashes, but solved mine about 75% way better. Yeah it really sucks and I do get pissed, but I get over it real fast.

If you guys need a good realm to play on, ThunderHorn. Great sever and nice people. I wish you all best of luck with you realm problems and hope you get back to playing soon.
I have not noticed much in the way of lag on this game.
Once maybe twice a day I have lag issues, not an issue for me.
When you consider how bad some other games are that "dont!" have lag issues (yay right), WoW is not that bad.
If anything I would put up with a lot more lag issues, this game is so compelling.
Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS) Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve
Y'all are ruddy hilarious. Ppl gripe about one MMO, you all laugh and call us bitches. We watch you suffer, and y'all go ape-shit over this and defend the hell out of it. Most of us don't care about your WoW problems. Penny Arcade has their opinions about it... I love those guys. I tried WoW and found it lacking, but i found it lacking for me, not everyone. I had to say something. If you love your game, thas all well and good and i'm happy you found your happy place... even if you do have to wait in line to get there.

22 servers were down for an 18-hour scheduled maintenance last thursday, but they actually ended up being down for more than a day. Either you don't play on one of these servers, or you didn't play that day. If you don't play on one of those servers, then chances are your not experiencing the problems others are.
Oh C'mon now.. I'm not the greatest Devil's Advocate. :P
No, it shouldn't be. The fact is I pay the same amount of money to play on a lag-free server, regardless of how many other people are playing, and I'm not getting that lag-free server.
I need to offset the amount of rabid fanboys on these forums.
Awesome! I dont have to right a big post because.... that was utterly pointless... and yes, your right, your not the greatest devils advocate, but its all annoying just the same.

That is my 2cents
230k copies first day, not 500k.
But still an amazing amount.

Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS)
Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve
