Gameplay has very little to do with the social aspect of MMO's (although it can directly influence it). Some of you are defining "gameplay" far too generally.
MMORPG gameplay is not socializing and roleplaying. That is something you do while playing the game, yes. But lets please just consider it as the mechanics and structure of how the game actually plays.
Please explain what you mean by "the mechanics and structure of how the game actually plays." Are you talking about combat mechanics? Because that's not what the OP asked. Is it gear progression?
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
I don't see how a gamer could call him self a gamer if gameplay is not the most important thing. If a gamer prefers graphics over gameplay he should look into being a visual artist not a gamer...
"Gameplay is a term most commonly used to used to rate, or score the quality of the experience had by gamer while playing a particular game."
It is the main and only part of a game that should be considered when playing a game. The only way there is no gameplay is if you put a beautiful image on the screen and that image does nothing, you just look at it. As soon as you interact with it, that is gameplay.
If you think the gameplay is not important, it means that you are not enjoying the game, which means that you are just plain dumb if you continue playing the game.
Whoever says gameplay is not the most important is basically saying it is not important whether I have fun playing a game or not.

That is a very black & white definition. It would include even a word document as some sort of a game. I think that gameplay is what makes the game feel "gamey" -ish or whatever. I agree with you but I'd put a gray area in somewhere in between.

Game play for me. Most games i play have poor graphics but the game play makes me forget about the graphics.

Like Guild Wars
...
Are you serious? Guild Wars is anything but an enhanced chatroom with graphics. I would normally associate that claim with a game like Second Life.
Not that Second Life isn't fun though... but it certainly fits the description far aptly than Guild Wars ever would.
Main characters:
Jinn Gone Quiet (Guild Wars)
Princess Pudding (Guild Wars)

I see it's the "Most important thing" so far at 91.3%.
At its worst gameplay must meld together with graphics in quality and at its best must rise above it.
If these conditions don't happen please pass me a DVD remote instead and tell me to toss my keyboard and mouse.
