Call of Duty MMO?

I am a HUGE MMO fan and a HUGE Call of Duty fan, so this really piqued my interest.

Here's hoping it comes soon!

March 2008, while speaking to a group of investment analysts, Activision Activision Blizzard President and CEO Bobby Kotick said the company is considering turning its Call of Duty franchise into a massively multiplayer online game.

November 12, 2009. - "It's definitely an aspiration that we see potential in, particularly as we look at different business models to monetize the online gameplay. There's good knowledge exchange happening between the Blizzard folks and our online guys."

"Our gamers are telling us there's lots of services and innovation they would like to see that they're not getting yet. From what we see so far, additional content, as well as all the services Blizzard is offering, is that there is demand from the core gamers to pay up for that."

Can't wait to see what the End Game will be like!

I don't see how it could be any good I mean all you want from an MMOFPS is lots of players on the screen at once in big battles like Planetside offered. However the consoles can't handle them kinda players in one area and they've clearly shown they don't care about the PC anymore.

So you'll probably end up with something crap like MAG where theres 256 people fighting for the the same end goal but you'll never get them all in one area as it's like a 16 v 16 type thing in different areas all doing their own objectives.

Hate WoW or love it, but Blizzard has never made a bad game.

There hasn't been a single Call of Duty that wasn't great.

Blending the two will not be easy, and I admit that they would have to do a lot to get it right.

But I have faith that it will at least be different.

The best blend of FPS/MMO so far for me has been Fallen Earth, although Borderlands is a good model for making a truly fun MMO.

It will either be great or really disappointing.

Either way, with Activision Blizzard at the helm, it should at least be good enough to give it a shot.

Well you forgot COD 3 and W@W which sucked and I don't like MW2 aswel cause it just feels dated now with a bullshit story and they fucked up the MP.

I think this is really about taking the online experience and tieing it in with Battle.net more so than it is about an MMO.  They can ditch Steam and use Battle.net to save money and use Blizzards features.

Also if there was a COD MMO Blizzard wouldn't be making it.  You people need to understand that Blizzard is still a separate entity to Activision, they don't share the making of a game.  It's not like Blizzard worked on half of MW2 and Infinity Ward is work on half of Diablo 3.  Activision Blizzard shares profits.

but you know some blizzard people would work on it as they have people that know what they are doing when it comes to making MMOs

Well Blizzard and Activision could make a new World War 2 online with ease by using a game style like call of Duty.

The possibility is there... is it the best idea ever? Not so sure.

WoW doesn't "suck" and neither did CoD3. Also, MW2 is hands-down the best CoD ever. The story was short, but amazing, and the online multiplayer is completely, totally, insanely awesome.

Whatever it is you're smoking. I don't want any. ><

Hehe, these posts are funny. Mass Effect MMO, Dragon Age MMO, and now a Call of Duty MMO. No, they would totally suck and everything you like about the single/multi player game would be trashed if not absent. That's just my opinion.

Mixing a shooter with an MMO isn't a new idea, that's a given.

However, nobody has yet to do it RIGHT.

If I were to put my money on anyone attempting this and getting it right, it would be Activision / Blizzard.

Call of Duty is arguably the biggest FPS ever, and WoW is the biggest MMO ever.

Even if they failed, it would be better than nearly every single attempt to blend the genres so far.

When you think about it the first game was sorta like an MMO, it was online, massive mutiplayer and the more you played the more honor you earned allowing your better perks and weapons.  The only thing against a COD mmo is the game is very unfriendly to newbs, unless they made a newb server / matchups like they did with the World at War.

wow does suck and so did any game made by treyarch and mw2 multiplayer is stupid with the kill streaks now u actually have to stay indoors from all the choopers and harriers in the sky. if ur lucky enough to get a pavlow in a care package which is easy as hell to get then your set for the match. so yeah mw2 multiplayer does suck even from a call of duty 4 vet prospective.

If the game was based on factions, they could alaways make it beneficial for the vetrans to help out the newbs. You know, if the community didn't totally suck.

Lol when I got my 360 the first game I tried online was Halo 3.  Get online and try a mutiplayer game.  The second I get into the game I hear some squeaky voiced annoying brat yapping about me having chosen the alien player model, how I didn't have a rank, to do this and that... constant stream of whining about how much I sucked and to follow him, get on this motorbike and drive around with him shooting off the back.  This kid is beginning to annoy me when I notice something...

I drive off a cliff and kill both of us on purpose.

Constant stream of expletives and swearing erupts.  I apologize say it was mistake I'll do it over and to come back.  Kid calms down starts to boss me around again we get on the motorbike.

I drive off the cliff again and kill both of us again.

This kid must've went berserk he was so angry he couldn't talk clearly and when I started laughing out loud it made him even angrier.

That was my first introduction to the online gaming community via xbox live.

Ya, my mouse automatically clicks on those threads too. All by itself.

Then maybe, perhaps you should direct yourself out of General Discussion. Apparently, you come from a place with no free will to ignore certain posts, and must read them all.

With this affliction you suffer, General Discussion may only worsen your symptoms. I know a doctor, take it from me.

Also, I care about Call of Duty and Dragon Age, as well as many other games outside of the MMO-genre. I also have the ability to control what I read and do not make assumptions that everyone feels the same way as I do. This makes you my polar opposite and mortal enemy.

It doesn't work like that. Blizzard and Activision didn't exactly "fuse" in a large new company, Blizzard kept its autonomy(you still see game published under Activision and Blizzard games published under Blizzard, not both published under Activision Blizzard) and can simply say no if Infinity Ward asked them to do this(any sane person would anyway).

Sweet, thanks for bumping this CoD-related thread so I could get a chance to read it and talk about it, thereby bumping it to the top again!  (Dontcha wish you could post without bumping?)

On topic, as others have pointed out the article is really about monetizing COD rather than making it a MMO.  Big difference there.

I do agree that a WW2 COD MMOFPS done in the style of Planetside would be a no-brainer runaway success.  All of the epic warfare, the jump-in-and-play action, the skill-centric gameplay, combined with a well known IP. The main concern would be that the game would only have 2 factions, I suppose.

I think you should actually take some time to read the article.

It talks about how the COD team and the Blizzard team are working together to make this happen.

    I'M not saying it...THEY are.

    Reading comprehension FTW!

  • skarwolfskarwolf Member CommonPosts: 245

I read the article and all it states is that activision likes what they see in Blizzard and WOW and they're considering creating their own subscription model that would provide players with more cosmetic, and gameplay options if they subscribe.  Not that it would necessarily be an MMO like WOW or whatever.
