Has anyone else had their Station.com/EQ account made a victim of fraud?

SerienSerien Member CommonPosts: 8,460

 Hey guys,

I was wondering if the following has happened to anyone else & if so, how it was dealt with. I received an email from Station.com last night saying the following:

Thank you for your recent order. This e-mail serves as your receipt for your purchase.

Please note that you can view your payment history in Station Launcher by selecting Account Menu > Payment History.

Now, I haven't had my EQII account active since I tried to go back for one month in May of this year (before that it hadn't been active since '07) Nonetheless, the re-activation of my account did not concern me nearly as much as the payment method. I went ahead and logged into my station.com account (which, by the way, had a different password -- so I had to reset) and under payment methods it shows another card under my name. Sure, the address is completely different (someone literally typed sladfjaldfjal;ksdjf for the address) but the card is still under my name with a recurring monthly bill.

I haven't logged into my EQII account to see if any of the items were taken or whatever just in case Sony Online Entertainment decides to say that I'm responsible for the charges since I logged in. My main problem right now is deactivating my account, and contacting station.com or SOE. Problem is, I can't do either.

Anyone else?

Just call your credit card company and explain to them what happened and to decline the charge. No need to wait on SOE to fix it.

    Definitely not a good situation.

I had this happen a few years back and the EQ2 Account was banned as a result.

The person who had gained access to my account used a stolen credit card to purchase expansion packs and adventure packs, and when the owner of the credit card that was used received a statement, they ran a chargeback on the purchases and the account was banned by SOE as a result.

I have no real advice to give, other than to try and keep your comp more secure. Unfortunately, there is a very real chance your account could be closed over this.

Did you even read the OP?

It's not his card on the account, he cannot do anything about the charges that have already gone through. He cannot contact the card manufacturer because they cannot give him information on someone elses credit card (obviously).

So yes, there is a very real need for him to wait on SOE and see what happens. He can try contacting SOE to explain what has taken place, but if purchases were made fraudulently there is 99% chance the account will be permanently banned from being used ever again.

Well Euphoryk, I'd say that'd advice in itself -- thanks for giving me a heads up on what to expect. Just curious though, while this was happening to you, did you log into your EQII account? I'm not sure if I should log in or not to check if my gear has been "traded" fearing that's the reason SOE would either charge me, or shut the account down (like you said -- and like I am now expecting SOE to do, close the account).

I'm assuming SOE contacted you? Because I cannot, for the life of me, find a 'contact us' link on station.com! Maybe it's right in front of my eyes, but I can't find it! And, as I'm sure most all people agree, it is so much easier to explain over the phone what has happened compared to an email..

And appel, thanks for responding, but Euphoryk explained what I would have written in response. It's not my card, it is just listed on my station.com account under my full name (yea, FULL name). But I wish it was that easy!

You are the victim of identity theft.

Your first concern should be to get that sorted.

Contact your credit card company (yes I know this is not your credit card) and tell them that you may be the victim of identity theft and take it from there.

You may also have to contact Police.

SOE is well down the list.

Nothing says irony like spelling ideot wrong.

First of all have you ever given your login and password out to anyone ?  I hate when i see these posts by people claiming "I got hacked,"  then you find out they let 5 different people play their account.

I let a co-worker use my WOW account while I was taking a break from the game.  One day I looked up my characters on the armory and found out he had sold all the items on two of them so he could get his flying mount for his character.  I was forced to choke him out a lil as punishment and changed my login and password.  Won't be doing that again.

Thanks -- I will do that first thing tomorrow morning. I do have a few credit cards and three bank accounts (yea...three ...don't know why I haven't closed the other two yet). I also sell a lot of stuff on eBay and use Paypal for that. I will contact all those places first thing in the morning and let them know -- I really do appreciate that advice.

I think I'll wait on filing a police report until there's a confirmed use of my identity by one of the cards I have/bank accounts/whatever else. (I'm not sure if that's a good idea, I'm just hoping for the best; that being that it isn't identity theft...hopefully).

And Skarwolf, I have never, ever, given any single person my log in information. So I know that's not the case. Hell, I didn't even write it down when I created the account three-some-odd years back.

I emailed SOE and received the following response, so it does seem like they do plan on taking care of it:

    Greetings,

Thank you for contacting Sony Online Entertainment.

It looks like someone has all of your account information. Our Fraud team already cought the charge and has reversed it for you. I highly recommend re-securing your account with us. Once this is done we can have the In Game GM's restore any lost items. Please provide the following information for security and I will start to re-secure the account with you

**EIGHT DIFFERENT, VERY SPECIFIC, QUESTIONS LISTED HERE**

I'm glad to have received that just a few hours after contacting them -- at least they're on top of it!

Thanks for the advice guys! First thing on my list tomorrow morning is to call my creditors!

Find out exactly what information they have on you via your SOE account.

Did your Station Account list your full name originally?  If not - they got it somewhere else.

Edit: and if that's the case then go to www.cybertechhelp.com and do a scan - you may have a keylogger or something on board.

Find out if that Credit Card they used was issued in your name - if so they have enough to create an alternate identity.

You must stomp on this fast if that's the case.

Debt collection agencies are very good at locating people like you based on debts someone else runs up in your name (or a very similar name) but they are less able to understand that mismatches in the data show it wasn't you... apparently. :-

Also, if you use the same username/password on your other MMO accounts check them out as well.
