No, I'm not talking about backgammon or chess in the West, I'm talking about extremely popular board game in East called Weiqi (in Chinese), Baduk (in Korean), Igo (Japanese).
Apparently, many of world's best known nerds have shown a very kin interest in this game, if not being called an addict.
I know my work supervisor got hopelessly absorbed by this game after working hours. And if I remember correctly, my Analysis II prof back in undergrad years dedicated one entire lecture on this game.
Now the torch is passed on me and I'm hopelessly trying to self-educate on this game since 3 months ago but can't help myself.
I find myself defeated countless times by the same anonymous dude who call himself "LogosBerna" in one amateur site that I've subscribed. Ironically, he never accused me of "not-worthy-of-his-time-and-energy", yet still insists that he thinks that I don't know what I'm doing with my own move that I planned on my own.
The complexity of this game just blows everything that I've known so far out in the water.
But I'm starting to get addicted to this one as no one around me, my girlfriend, colleague would've suspected.
Here is the pic.

Congratulations?
How do you play? It looks like that reversi game that comes with windows...
I'm still learning.
Knowing the basic rules, some basic moves is like 0.000001 % of the game's learning curve.
Yeh... the game is much, much deeper than it looks. Even though all the stones are the same, and the rules are very basic, there's just an incredible amount of depth involved.
Go got a popularity boost in Japan from the manga/anime "Hikaru no Go", too.
Isn't that Othello?
Playing: The Saga of Ryzom
Looking forward too: Matrix Online

Here is an introduction to Go for those interested. It is a very simple game, few rules, and strangely addictive. Technically, if that guy has been beating you for the longest time then he should be giving you a handicap (placing extra stones wherever you want on the board at setup) until the game becomes a close match. As you increase in skill your handicap will be lowered to balance the gameplay out. There should be no reason for you to be losing that long because the handicap allows even novices to beat grandmasters.
Though Go is not an mmorpg, it is perhaps the best board game I have ever played.
Interesting, so is there a site where begginers can play online?
looks like the game Stones from the Wheel of Time book series

Go online
If you want to play an ancient strategy game then play Starfleet Battles and I don't mean those travesties that they put on computer.
Feel the pain as someone takes down your shields and starts blasting away at internal structure.
this a very funny thread..
all you MMORPGers who have possibly seen everything there is to see in a mmorpg are amazed by this simple game.
heh
lol, i think this game is fun, though
