What does Allods even mean?

McGamerMcGamer Member UncommonPosts: 1,073

I don't get why gpotato doesn't do a better job with their translating in the first place. Like the title says; what does Allods even mean? Most games will at least explain in the background story what the title means. Other gpotato titles like Rappelz and Flyff have the same issue. Try explaining those game title names to some non-gamer as to what game you play and they look at you like you're crazy.

    allod(s):

Small allotments of land held by free men. The turbulence of the Middle Ages caused most allodial farmers to give up their land rights in exchange for military protection and few allods remained by the late Middle Ages.

Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe.

Firstly, it's pretty sad that only 1/4 of the replies were even intelligent. A player should not have to go to dictionary.com to read the premise for the game advertised. That is something that should be already added into the presentation like 97.9% of every other video game on the market. So keep the flaming locked in the little spaces of the mind where it belongs and leave the posting to the intelligent part of the brain. Thx for the info Cyan, too bad most f2p game companies like gpotato could care less about player feedback to even do their advertising right, solely because the game is f2p.

When I hear a person say they have "Allods", my initial reaction is for them to make their way down the hall to the bathroom to put on some cream before they come back.

Whether this game is good or not, "Allods" is not very intuitive to Western players.

I thought Allods is a russian word that simply isnt translated because you dont translate brand names. Doh.

  • wowfan1996wowfan1996 Member UncommonPosts: 719

Err, it's not a Russian word. It's a historical term although in-game interpretation is slightly different.

In game allods are small landmasses floating in Astral. They look much like Outland in Warcraft universe though individual Allods are smaller and separated from each other. Since Astral is a very harsh and even deadly environment, special ships are needed to travel between allods.

MMORPG genre is dead. Long live MMOCS (Massively Multiplayer Online Cash Shop).

Got this from the Allods EU site:

"Allods are the name given to islands which were left over after the planet shattered. The islands float in the Astral, an expansive substance blanketing the space surrounding the former planet."

For me, the name sounds like a brand name for either cough drops or a hemorrhoid creme :P

This kind of thinking is why we live in an age of idiots who sit there wide eyed and marvel at anyone who knows any information outside of what was on American Idol last night. Oh what terrible days are these where people might need to educate themselves. The title of the game is such an absolutely critical element to be understood to enjoy the game as well.
Seriously, even if you were ignorant of what it means which is excusable given the rarity of the word(but does not excuse being too lazy to learn it and suggesting it should be changed because you would rather remain ignorant) you could have just as well gone on assuming it was some made up word that was part of the games lore and everything would still have been fine as you would have to be a moron not to figure out what the general context of the word is after reading a few texts in the game anyway. Oh wait, you probably didn't read those either because "reading quests is hard".

Allods comes from their earlier Rage of Mages games.  Allods was the original name of those games:

Rage of Mages is a PC game that combines role-playing and real-time strategy. Produced by Nival Interactive it was first released in Russia under the name of Allods: Sealed Mystery. The game was published in April 1998 in the EU by Buka Entertainment and on September 30 1998 in the US.

A sequel was later made in 1999 by Nival Interactive called Allods 2: master of souls and published in the west by Monolith Productions entitled Rage of Mages 2: Necromancer. An online MMORPG based on the game is being released under the name Allods Online. It will be published in Russia by Astrum Nival, in Europe by Gala Networks Europe and in the Americas by Gala-Net in late 2009.

Action of the game takes place in the universe of allods - islands, which are separated with astral from each other. Allods are being held from devouring with astral by Great Mages. If a Great Mage leave his allod, the last one disappears in the astral.

It is really funny that several of the flamers feel that just because they posted degrading comments towards myself that that makes them somehow more intelligent than me? The ability to speak doesn't make you intelligent. You are missing the point that I was trying to make about the fact that their name Allods, is not very marketable or widely known because it isn't even a commonly used term that hasn't been tossed around for a few centuries so get a grip.

My saying earlier that one shouldn't have to use dictionary.com doesn't mean I haven't read or don't read novels. In fact the opposite is true, I read novels regularly, and probably have read more than 3/4 of the flamers posted here.

I'm not going to get into an argueing match about this since only a couple of the posters even bothered to show some intelligence about the thread. I don't work at a fast food restaurant either and some of you might want to read the forum rules again about posting derogatory comments next time though. If any of you were in the beta you would understand the basis of my question but due to nda I won't say more. Have a nice one

If you played the game you would know what Allods means. Sorry but you fail.

Allods is a digestive supplement, like Rolaids.

Fail? lol Due to NDA I can't discuss your reply so you might want to rethink how much you discuss about it.

Anyhow, the thread has long been a moot point no thanks to the amount of resident flamers. No need to reply or post anymore flames, thanks.

Are you sure? I'm not really all that certain enough people have come in here to tell you how stupid you are, or how easy it would have been for you to pull out a dictionary.

OP is right, its a rubbish name for a game title. The word is far too old and obscure.

Hopefully though the game is the opposite.

Your arrogance will taste delicious lightly seasoned with nutmeg, but it needs to be tenderized first.

Also you fail at fractions. The first time you would have meant 1/3 not 1/4. There was only 3 responses to your op.

Yes, you made yourself fail even harder, there is no NDA on this game.

OP starts off by wanting to know what the word allods means and then quickly changes his tune after several people bash the crap out of him. pure awesomeness.

It wasnt that he wanted to know, it was that he was ranting about them using a word and not explaining its significance when they do explain it, or when he could have looked the word up. What bugged me was that despite being shown that they do define what the word means within the context of the game's lore that he stll was raging about it.
