Things you wish you would have known at level 1, first char

SturmrabeSturmrabe Member Posts: 927

I'm going to give FE a try, and would like some heads-up advice from people... basically, what did you wish you would have known from the gate to make your life easier/your char better?

I'm all about learning on my own, but a nudge would help.... all the hater threads about this game have made me want to try it out and support a smaller company's attempt at an MMO.

I've played all the big MMO's and a few small ones so nothing will likely shock me, but I don't expect them to have reinvented the wheel or anything.

I hate WoW, but just because its an EQ1 clone with a horrible community of retards and idiots, I liked AoC OK, but it felt like you were in a cattle pen with all those narrow zones and of course the sodomized the lore, I was a big Shadowbane fan despite its flaws, so i was wondering: is there player built cities???

Anyway, I'll be doing more research about FE over the next week or so, and after Spanksgiving (and the family is outta my fucking house) I'll install it and give it a whirl...

Thanks for any advice!

That. Play around with the character planner on that site too, it's very helpful.

Sounds like my type of gamer OP, your in for a treat.

Basically take your time, do the starter turtorial (after the first "instanced" one) and it really makes you realize all the shit you can do (regarding crafting ect.) with the games depth.

No player built cities yet, but cities have faction warfare.....in terms of faction endgame PvP the devs have a lot cookin.

Also theres over 5.5k quests and counting, never feel confined anywhere, go explore!

(For example I went pure crafter for my char - however - I still use good melee weapoons, pistols, and rifles all at the same time depending on the combat situation, and in no way am I "gimped" in any of them, its frankly friggin awesome!)

Also since I have been just harvesting/crafting so much I am proud to say im almost ready to make my first motorcycle before im even level 14!

    I play all ghame

Two major things (one of which really helped me enjoy the game better) was learning how to change the color of certain channels in my chat box (+ on the message bubble next to the chat entry box - options) & that I could change my hair by right clicking on my head.

Ok, whats Globaltech Atlus? Is that like a class or "race" (since this is skill based)?

Thanks for the advice all, esp 420: I'm probably going to do something ranged as I hate melee classes by and large... iffy on crafting as I've never been a fan but I usually at least try to craft the type or weapon/armor I prefer for my char (and ammo if applicable).

Where is a good "hot spot" for lowbies?

How soon should I look for a guild? And how required are they? [From Shadowbane "log the fuck off if you don't have one" to "Meh, whatever"]

Well, it's a fairly indepth game kind of like Eve, maybe not on that massive a scale but its got a learning curve. Those sites just have some interesting info, in-game contests, etc. On top of that the podcasts are really useful because they give you some awesome tips on things that are very important.

The radio is fun to listen to while you're playing. :)

Horde resources, having to buy certain resources to craft is really expensive.

Turns out a lot of items i thought were junk were much needed, and not the easyest to find.

So save tradeskill items, use your warehouse and horse/atv inv and keep those items untill you know you wont need them.

Oh and hording resources includes mailing your  rerolls all your previous characters items.  You will reroll expect it .

I hope there is lots of room cause I'm the hordingest motherfucker you will ever meet...

I don't throw SHIT away till I KNOW its useless/outclassed/etc...

Also, can I download the client from somewhere BEFORE I buy the game? There isn't shit one can do with an MMO client w/o a valid login, but I want the thing installed and patched before I sign up so when I make the leap I'll be in on day one... or is that not possible?

    Also: ATV or Hat?

I downloaded the client from here, way faster than the auto-patcher:

Go for the HAT if your going to make a crafter (nice stats).

ATV's can be made easily as a crafter.

If you are going range then it would be my best suggestion to learn how to craft your own ammo.  Crafting is almost a must in the game and you can craft while you play so there is really no reason not to craft.

My opinion when you get there is save the ATV key and use it to craft a motorcycle.  It only took me two more days to craft a motorcycle and the experience I got in crafting was worth the wait.   The Cycle has a cool factor, much better speed - but my opinion the horse continues to be nice because it can go about anywhere where you are limited on travel with the vehicles.

Change targeting on your options to automatically switch to 1st person.

A lot of good information was provided by other posters - just enjoy the game.

-Having a horse will save you money and time when questing in Sector 1.

-Also,..if you are not sure where to spend your AP points, then don't spend them. Save them for when you come to certain parts of the game and realize you want change your combat style or wear that next peice of that you can actually already craft.

Case in point: I started this game thinking I was gunna be some type of pistol weilding baddass. That changed to using nothing but melee in 95% of S1. It then changed yet again to being rifle focused so I could join vista, which overall has worked well with my playstyle. The whole time I was crafting just about everything I could. That whole process of switching didn't gimp me to much because I was stingy with my AP and only started to really spend them once I got to S2 and knew exactly what I wanted my character to be when he grew up.

So I'm guessing if you choose ATV you get a key that basically is a gimme craft item but you can use it on a motorcycle later instead?

I'll probably go for the hat for the Semi-Bavarain look anyway :D

Thanks for all the info and links, I'm reading up on the official website about the game in general, and this tread is a real heads-up!

don't spent APs unless you're 100% sure of your LONG-TERM build.

you can complete all of S1 without ever spending AP (i don't recommend this of course, but don't be afraid to stay a bit gimp if you're unsure!)

i read all the globaltech atlas stuff and a lot of other info on builds, so i was pretty good on the game before i even started..

the one thing i did not know and really wish i had is the crafting screen filter.  you can set it to filter only items you can CURRENTLY build.  in effect this tells you whether you can make something out of all that junk you have without having to sort through a hundred recipes and look at components.  If i had known this as i was just picking up crap, i would have leveled all my crafting skills a lot earlier and for free ( i'm not a crafter in any game, but in FE crafting takes no time investment at all as long as you have components, so it's easy to get into!)

for the bonus, dont take the ATV!  you get an ATV from a major questline, plus the gas is expensive.  You get a free horse from one of the first quests, however UPGRADE that horse immediately.  Even the most basic bought / crafter horse takes like 5 times less feed and is much better.

Yep, they [the actual Funcom devs] called us "Lore Mongers"... its a lot less offensive!

But yeah, that was me, those backstabbing honorless shiteaters, the Snowhawk Clan, booted all the founding members eventually in order to become a leetd00d raiding/PvP asshat clan that ended up not following the lore at all... its sad really, but I'll never touch AoC again, not even the free 2 weeks they keep emailing me about :p

This statement says more about you then it says about those who play WoW.
