Now I am fairly new to mmos. I played SWG back when it first came out and then I played a little bit of Planetside. But I haven't played any in years up until recently when I heard about SWTOR and decided I'd probably try out SWG and see what's changed. Now I'm feeling like playing mmos again and I have to say I have missed out on WOW for the most part.
I was thinking about playing it, at least trying the trial. But I wasn unsure. Is it still as good as it was when everyone was going nuts over htis game back in 05/06? Why is there so much hate for this game on this board? It makes no sense to me. So many people bash this game and it being theme park oriented but if there are like 10 million people playing it wouldn't it make sense to see most people on an MMO forum enjoying this game?
I've always wanted to play it, but never decided to jump in. I should have, I feel like maybe I've been missing something.

never hurts to free trial it and base your own opinon, I played it for 5+ years now. But recently stopped subscription few months back, with the patchs not so hot, and the recycled tiered armors and such equipment. I just felt the Blizzard staff has been a bit lazy on the design of the new stuff and content, I'll probably be back for the new expansion thou.
WoW does what it does and does it well. It brought the MMO market to the masses. Some claim it dumbed things down, but in my opinion, it simplified certain things whilst actually complicating others (e.g. different stats effecting different things.) People often bash it because it was an outsider to the MMO world that took it by storm. Also, many bash it in a vain attempt to look cool somehow.
In the end, its a polished game with a full quest system and backup from a multitude of privately fun websites which have lots of information on quests, items, talent specs etc in case you're stuck. It just doesn't appeal to everyones tastes. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Don't get me wrong, it isn't perfect by a long shot (in my own opinion). But it ticks a LOT of the boxes that many other MMO's don't / can't.
In the end, take whatever you read about WoW with a metaphorical "pinch of salt". No one on these boards will know what YOU enjoy. Only you know for sure. So, try it out and see. Just bear in mind that the majority of players are all high level, so you will only see the majority running around in the cities or in the high level zones. You get to the cities at about L15 - 20, so it gives you some idea. And like any other MMO trial, don't just play it for one day.
Top 10 Most Misused Words in MMO's
I think people get frustrated over WoW because of the impact its had on the genre. Arguably WoW is part of the reason that the genres new games are so stale- developers and backers are preoccupied with getting their grubby hands on some of the "WoW money" instead of designing quality niche games that highly appeal to certain styles.

I hate gear grinds.
I'm not here to complete my forum PVP dailies.
If you've never played it, try it.
It really is a great game, just that when you've played it for years, people can get tired and pissy about it. I do.
There's a free trial, and even the base game (no expansions) is like what.. $20 with the first month free.
Personally, I think people hate on WoW because they played it too much, got burned out, and are jealous of the rest of us who are still enjoying it.
Welcome to mmorpg.com/ bleedOranage.
Here you will find out that every single game sucks. It dosent matter in what way or that taste is diffrent for players, the games just suck or are dumbing the game play down to a monkey level. And becuse they suck many of us has to complain somewere, and we are smart enough to know that the small community around us in real life would put us in a nice and fluffy room if we would speak our mind. So we turn to the only place we are welcomed- the internet.
And World of warcraft mainly sucks becuse it ruined the mmo industry, it made mmo´s eazplay, blizzard ruined the lore, the raids are to hard/easy, its boring, the gfx is like 2005, they runined [random class], it copied everquest, the community, nothing to do, causal, not enough hardcore, to hardcore and so on. Mostly the game gets alot of hate here is probably becuse its the first mmo game many of us played and now we are trying to find a fix like wow gave long time ago- like your local junkie.
edit: you can download a trial (with 14 days of game play or such), not to hard tbh. and if you like it you can buy the game quite cheap and get another 30 days of gameplay

I like WoW and I say it is (or was) a pretty good game, it has plenty of content and all, but it's old now it just isn't my cup of tea anymore. I played it until 76 so I don't really know what end game has to offer. I'm currently playing Aion and I do enjoy it. I won't go back to WoW, instead I will wait for Blizzard's new title.
But yeah do give it a try, if you never played it you will probably like it, if you like intensive PvP go Blackrock, it is still the best server. Even though it's an NA server you would find people on your timezone anytime.
This really made me laugh, thank you.
But no joke, I think you may be right.

I think many hardcore MMO players hate or dislike World of Warcraft due to the way it changed the genre.
In World of Warcraft you can play through 95% (wild guess) of the content completely by yourself. It doesn't really feel like an MMO because it lacks the necessity of grouping. Actually, it's more like a huge single player game, but with many people around you. And with the huge success this game was, for whatever reason that was, many developers started following this model, and it has changed this genre for what many consider to be bad for it's name.
As to if this is a bad game to start with, i don't think so. It's fairly for casual mmo players and is a nice introduction to the genre, and when you get tired of it you can try more hardcore games. FFXI, EVE, all that jazz.
I tried it again (tried it when it was released but didnt like it) and I was shocked on how outdated the gfx are.
If you have any expectations on GFX and particulary animations then dont try this game. You will be dissapointed.
Regardless of that WoW is a solid, themepark, linear MMORPG with massive content. I would stick to it if I wasnt tired of these kind of MMORPGs (and the gfx, bleh).

Bang on. Except how you said it sucked. Which it clearly doesn't. If people like you didn't say that, we would be fine. Don't like the game? Great, tell him why if you're so inclined.

Agree but wow has some of the best special affects in an mmo so not sure how you thought otherwise. There over the top on some to the point that its kinda stupid.

Well wow is 5 years old, old world Azeroth ( which you would of been seeing) has not changed visual in that time, TBC and most defo wotlk is several step ahead of classic wow.. Cataclysm will bring it all together with old azeroth getting a make over to wotlk standards.
Then again if its the "style" of the gfx that don't appeal, which I suspect is the case then it will never appeal. I love the fact that everything does not look like its made of plastic eg, EQ2,Vanguard.
As to Animations, you must of been playing a different game cus animations in WoW are top notch.
To the OP.. suck-it & see.
If you ve never played it WoW does offers a decent experiance . So i would recomend it to the OP if hes looking for a new game . The game does nt suck but its also nowhere near as good as it used to be . The company that run it have brought in numerous changes that have made it a shadow of its former self and much of the community feel that was there in its first few years has gone . If i were you though if you want to give it a try i would certainly do the free trial first then wait for the Cataclysm expansion before buying it . Because people that have given up will proberbly return to it for that in the hope things have improved and you ll have a far more enjoyable time leveling than you will at present because its really difficult to get groups together for the mid level range quests . Oh and if you want to get anywhere in the pvp side of the game play the horde ( in europe ) because the alliance attracts a younger demographic and tends to lose just about everything .
PVP on the U.S. servers were the same when i played. More mature folks played horde and made it a better experience for pve as well as pvp.
WoW was great in 2004.
But now its just dated. Not any worse, actually quite a bit better but when you release dated... 5 years later you're really dated. Basically if they release a graphics upgrade to WoW like they did to EQ oh boy. Imagine AoC's poly count and colour variation while maintaining WoW stylized graphics =O Pretty grab everyone who left by the nuts and drag them back.
But with D3 pushed back and Cat up next, a WoW 1.5 is years off =(
It's primarily hated and picked at because it's so damn popular, no the game isn't amazing, but, no game on the market atm is amazing, and wow just managed to pull ahead of everyone namely due to the fact it has a huge competitive community via arenas, even though they aren't that great.
Fact is, popular games = tons of hate, tons of love, and tons of bullshit.
Just my 2cents anyways. Cheers!
For a first time MMO its one of best starters to show you the ropes. Endless content and polished gameplay make this MMO top notch in the market but for many its got old and stale.
I can almost garentee you wont be dissappointed if you try it, unless the graphics turn you off of course.
"I play Tera for the gameplay"
WoW is a great game with a loyal mature fanbase. It promotes grouping over soloing, the quests are meaningful and difficult, and progression is quite tough with only a select few making it to highest levels and endgame raiding.
I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

One man, a small pile of money, and the screwball idea of a DIY Indie MMORPG? Yep, that's him. ~sigh~
DANGER! DANGER WILL ROBINSON! DANGER!
OP should flee from this post as quick as possible. As much as I enjoy this website it is possibly the worst place to come and ask for advice about MMO's....ESPECIALLY WoW.
As someone else has said WoW isn't a terrible game. It has, in fact, done a lot to bring MMO's into mainstream gaming. This comes both with the good and the bad. As a completely new player to the game you should find quite a lot of stuff to enjoy. People who have been playing for a long time (or had been playing for a long time, like myself) have started to see the game becoming very, very repiticious. Blizzard has recycled armor and maps and content that, in some cases, many of us have seen before. You haven't though, so it's hardly a con to the new experience of the game.
WoW dumbed down some things about mmo's, but has explored new ground in others. Blizzard has more or less pioneered cross-server instancing and the whole phasing system that WotLK introduced. The list of features in WoW isn't perfect, but there are lot of very fun and interesting things there.
I don't play it anymore because I got tired of seeing and doing things I had already done. Ulduar was kind of a relief from the far too easy raiding......for like a patch.
/sigh
Take any popular game and you'll see kids playing it. It's kind of natural that kids play games much more than adults. But no-one forces you to interact with them. You can join a guild that has age restrictions.
Why should a game promote something? It gives you opportunities. In WoW you're two mouseclicks away from making a party.
Difficult enough for a newbie, easy for a veteran. What's wrong about that? As for meaning, name one MMO with meaningful quests please.
Why should leveling ever be tough? It's just leveling, basically an extended tutorial on how to play your class.
MMORPG genre is dead. Long live MMOCS (Massively Multiplayer Online Cash Shop).
because nobody can make a game thats good enough to eclipse it. That's the most honest answer I can give as to why I hate it I want something different... but just as good.
This really made me laugh, thank you.
But no joke, I think you may be right.
Agreed.
A lot of the bashing has nothing to do with the game's quality itself. Among the many reasons that people have to bash it, whether they are rational or not, there's another big reason of which I can relate.
WoW has stolen many spouses during the last 5 years. In fact, WoW stole my wife. Get this - she actually got together with and married a guy that was absolutely into WoW.. it was a match made in hell.
I may be a bit bitter about that (though her and I were thru anyway), but I don't fault the game. WoW is a good game, it's just not my thing.
Not sure why I shared that.. But whatever.
Acidon
EDIT: For anyone who thought this was kinda funny (don't blame you!), I wanted to share the fact that my FIRST wife is also hopelessly into WoW and married a guy who into it as well.
Seriously.. WoW steals my wives.
