Alganon: State of the Game Address

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

Quest Online has published a State of the Game address for Alganon with the intention to address the numerous concerns raised by members of the Alganon community.

One such concern is the uncanny similarities between Alganon and World of Warcraft, to which Quest Online responded:

Interestingly enough, when we look at the content and features of Alganon, the majority of negative feedback is centered on complaints that there are similarities to World of Warcraft. It's absolutely no secret that Alganon is a game made by gamers and with gamers in mind. That being said, we see what gamers want and what they're asking for, and we are creating a game that will hopefully do just that. World of Warcraft is a fantastic MMO with many great features, as are a great many others still played by online gamers, and it would be fighting against the very nature of this community not to consider and include as many of the wonderful ideas and features that we've come to love and wish for in a single game as we can. In fact, interestingly enough when given a chance to privately talk in game to GMs the majority of players giving negative feedback weren't all that upset about bugs or problems in the game, but the fact that the game has similar features to others they play. When asked why they were upset by including some of their favorite features in the game, many were left wondering this themselves. We aren't trying to take another game and change it - we're just making a game with as many asked-for features as we can fit in.

Hmm... here's my state of the game address: It's not ready. It crashed before I could get through character creation.

Ive heard nothing but bad things about this game. The fact that they expect people to pay for it will cement its failure.

There is something to be said for continuing features or expectations of a genre, even ones that are included in some of the most popular titles in a genre. But there is also a line that can be crossed when doing so. And it is about as bad when you cross that line, as being different for the sake of being different, to the detriment of your game.

*SIGH* When do they understand that they crossed a line, should be ashamed of themselves, and put this game to rest by never releasing it!

The fact that keep denying they didn't ripped off the complete UI from WoW, while numerous people found traces of the exact same code in their UI as in WoW. Only proves how much of a sick con-artists they are.

They are a total disgrace as developers and only bring more harm to the MMO genre!!

They need to change those ugly character models, I created a character and couldn't stand the way it looked, so that turned me off to the game.

Yah I'm sure the gamers asked, "Please, make the game just like WoW!".  It's really to bad companys like this can't be sued for pretty much identically replicating anothers game.

Currently Playing: Toying around with AoC and bored with Darkfall

Thinking of Playing: Fallen Earth or Darkfall after this months update.

Have Played: EQ1, EQ2, WoW, WAR, Vanguard, EvE, Requiem, PW, Lotro, Lineage2, AoC, SWG...

The thing is, if I wanted to play a game that was just like WoW, I would play WoW.

    Exactly.

Alganon is a buggy mess that isn't even close to being as good as the game it's trying to copy.  The graphics are worse than WoW, the gameplay isn't as smooth as WoW, the animations aren't as detailed as WoW, the features that make WoW a fun game are either missing from Alganon or are broken.

I could go on and on about all of the shortcomings of this game but what it boils down to is they are attempting to charge a normal MMO game price + monthly fee for a game that's below free to play quality.

It's like a street vendor selling Gucci knockoffs for the same price as the real thing.  Sure they're going to get a few suckers, but they would be far more successful if they were actually charging an appropriate price for the quality of the product.  In Alganon's case, they shouldn't be charging anything.

WoW looks like it does for two reasons.  For one, it's simply the Warcraft art style.  Secondly, the game can run on almost any PC.

Alganon has no predetermined art style and is a laggy mess on my laptop with 4 gigs of RAM, an Nvidia 8700M GT, and a 2.4GHz dual core.  Yeah, not the greatest PC, but take a look at the game ...

     That was so lame.

They ask why copying WoW to a T is a bad thing? Maybe because it makes the game stale and boring?! Not to mention WoW will certianly beat them at their own game, duh...

Also, just because you like the features that WoW has, and want to implement them into your own game, you don't have to copy the art style like they shamelessly did. I can understand going for the cartoony look, but it really just shows how uninspired the designers are when you compare the screen shots for WoW screens.

Look at Spellborn or Ryzom. Both of those games have a cartoony look, but they are both very unique in their style. Those games might not be successes for other (gameplay) reasons, but those are prime examples of cartoony games that don't look like WoW.

Someone hit the nail on the head already "Stale".

Borrowing heavily is fine, IF you can improve on it or make it better, or at the very worst equal the quality of what you are copying, & it's for that exact reason why WoW clones have such a fantastic track record of success.

Because they are copying what WoW did, but not the why they did it.

Having at least your own art style is one of the ways you bring something fresh to the market, & they were too lazy to even do that, the game will look stale & tired & old before it's even released, if a freshly made sandwich looked like it was 5 years old would you still want to eat it?

I dunno about it all, but I still enjoy it.  When I first logged in I had the same thoughts about how close it was to wow, but was told by other players to wait it out and play for a couple hours.  The longer I play, the more the game stands on its own.  I don't want to be portrayed as a fanboy, because I can definitely see the game is in need of love still, but seriously it's not close to as bad as people say.

Before you comment take a couple hours and take a peek.  I'm still liking it and not regretting my sub purchase at all.

I really had many expectatives with this game, it looked as my ideal game so I invested almost two days downloading it. But it crashed even before I could create my character, it crashed other ten times before I figured out that the problem was the servers full, later I could get into the game and I was starting to walk at the world and it crashed again. I patiently started the process again to log in and inform what I was doing before crashing. I repeated this process about 20 times in total till I got tired.

My veredict: this game is a total failure and my prediction is that no one will test it since you cant even test anything. I will keep it in my computer at the hope someday they find a patch for this problem.

After months of thinking this game was nothing but a WoW clone, I finally broke down and downloaded it (mostly out of boredom). After a few hours it was easy to point out similarities. The harder part was figuring out why I had played for those few hours and wanted to keep playing. The bottom line was, the game was fun. Why not just download the open beta and give it a shot?

I can see peoples' points, though, so I can't knock people for not liking something they, well, don't like.  But I can't see the point of judging something they haven't tried.  That's all it comes down to for me :)

I like how the people posting in defense of the game just registered this month with 1 or 2 posts.

Please forgive me if I don't take you seriously.

Fact is, I (and many like me) have tried the game.  It is nothing but a generic version of WoW with worse graphics, worse optimization, and lots and lots of bugs.

The bottom line is that if you enjoy Alganon you may as well play WoW because it is exactly the same game, only better.

Please, people with 1 post, tell me why I would play Alganon instead of WoW?

Yup, my astroturf alarm bells went off as well.   If we could see their IP's, I wouldn't be surprised to learn they came from an Alganon-owned address block.  :P

Taken from the State of the Game Adress:

"If you want real feedback from players, look in the Alganon forums"

So...only the Alganon forums will tell you how great and unique Alganon is. All the other forums are completely biased.  LOL. This man is SO PATHETIC.

Whats wrong Mr. Allen? The player response to your open beta call didn't go as planned? 3 to 4 business weeks of open beta and still 7,000 (out of 10,000)  keys are undistributed. The vast majority of the people that tried the game admit that it sucks at best. You don't need to play the game until the final lvl to understand that. 1 hour in the game and you have it all figured out. The gaming community Mr. Allen is not inexperienced. It has YEARS of gaming experience and it can distinguish a bad product as soon as it sees one. And if you think that by downgrading peoples' opinions that dont post in the official forums adds credit to your game then you are so very lame. If you are seriously trying to convince players to get feedback only from the Alganon forums (which present Alganon as a great game) then you are underestimating the player base and think of them as idiots. Thats why you don't deserve them.

So stick to your 500 bright individuals who actually found something good and unique in Alganon. Everyone gets what he deserves after all. I wish you good profits.

    Well said man.

They are so desperate at the moment, that they are spamming my mailbox every couple days, begging me to log into the Open Beta.

Luckily Hotmail detects crap from real emails and places all Quest Online emails in the Spam folder.
