Hey everyone. I just bought EQ2 today. It's my first game ever (i've really never been a gamer). I was just wondering if maybe some of you advanced players had some tips for me on questing or something. Thanks in advance.

This is going to be a tough game to get started with. It is very group oriented, and if you tank a group you're going to cause problems for everyone. My recomendation is to first, let people know you're pretty new to gaming and then when they give you advice listen to it.
A few quick hints though:
I recomend playing a Mage > Sorceror > Wizard (or Warlock)- The reason I say this is because they are just straight Damge Dealer. No one in the group really relies on them for anything else. Normally fighter types are the easiest, but in EQ2 they have to, what is called, manage aggro. Simply this means they have to make sure that all the bad guys attack them and not the healers and mages. This can be tough.
If you get in trouble DON'T RUN! You have to learn to trust your healer. If you run the Fighter types have trouble getting aggro away from you and back on them, and the healers will have trouble healing you.
Other than that practice makes perfect.
Macro's are tiny programs that you can use in game. If you hit ctrl + O it will bring up the menu and you can create macros. Search the offical forums for a guide to doing this.
LISTEN TO JODOKAI !!!!
In that one sentence he has summed up how to stay alive in most MMORPG's. As a Templar I can't tell you how many times we lost people in a group because people paniced and ran. Sometimes I will try to run after them to get close enough to heal them.
Sadly however most of the time they die then they complain to me about "Why did I let them die"
As a healer I draw aggro a lot. But I stay where I am so the tank can get the aggro back. If I ran I would have died.
If you must run, run in a circle around your tank and healer staying close to them.
Sorry for the rant But everyone needs to hear this.

Well, about the dont run thing...
If you can outdistance safely and keep the mobs running after you, if you have the ''adds'' on you only and not the main target of the tank(never run ever if you have the main target after you), if the healer is brilliant, then running is a form of CC. If you cant outdistance the mobs, dont ever go far from the healer and the tanker, united is the only way. Sometimes you may want to take aggro off the healer, but the best way to do this is to kill the mob on tank and free the tank from this target that is now dead.
If you are scarred, dont run! Just stay there and take it into the chin, if you understand running is appropriate to help the group, then run. Many mobs beating on the group is always bad, and even if the healer is itching to heal you, it may be good to run and ignore the rants. If the healer forget his job and run after you, ditch that healer and find another! You are expendable as a last ressource, and the mobs didnt catch you yet!

Macros are seperate types of applications that basically go out and do certain tasks on the game that they are programmed to do... for instance this crafting macro i have does the following:
Features:
* Reacts to tradeskill events!!! Properly counters any event!!
* Covers All tradeskills!!
* Option to set how many items you want to make.
* Includes an easy to use tool to corectly size and position your windows for any resolution for accurate click targeting by the macro.
* Option to craft only crude items for fast bulk crafting.
* Option to spam one ability to increase the quality of items made.
* Uses a wildcard to select your Everquest II window so you don't have to change it after every patch.
* Option to run up to 2 commands when done crafting items. You can camp, go AFK, or even announce to the world that your macro is done, if you REALLY wanted to.
Sample Session:
Do you want to get a jumpstart on crafting? The following is a step by step guide to gaining your first 14 levels.
1. Get 6 of the highest quantity bags/boxes you can get.
2. Put everything you have in the bank and go to your local artisan crafting place.
3. Buy an equal number of stacks of shaped tin bars, coal and fossil temper.
4. Make sure to leave 1 slot open for items if crafting crude only. If letting it go, leave 2 slots open, 1 for shaped as well as 1 for crude.
5. Let the macro craft Tin spikes until out of components and full of crafted items.
6. Sell the spikes to a merchant.
Repeat the above until you can craft level 5 items. Then do the following:
1. Get 6 of the highest quantity bags/boxes you can get.
2. Put everything you have in the bank and go to your local artisan crafting place.
3. Buy an equal number of stacks of shaped lead bars, coal and chloro resin.
4. Make sure to leave 1 slot open for items if crafting crude only. If letting it go, leave 2 slots open, 1 for shaped as well as 1 for crude.
5. Let the macro craft lead ornaments until out of components and full of crafted items.
6. Sell the ornaments to a merchant.
Rinse and repeat. If you have 6 8 slot bags, that is 48 slots. Buy 15 stacks for each component. That will create 300 ITEMS!!!!!!! You would never want to craft such low level stuff if you were doing this manually. But since you are not doing it manually, who cares?

it really takes the edge off of the more repetitive parts of the game.

Well from the above post you can see that some people are lazy. I know it is a time sink to do crafting manually, however look what happened to SWG because of the macros.
I still dont understand why people use macros like the one mentioned above.
Why even bother to say you play a game when you automate it so much. Spending time crafting IS part of the gaming experience. If you dont like to spend the time crafting why even play the game.
Oh well, I will prolly get flamed by the Macro heads out there and I know I am not going to change anyone's mind.
But I quit playng SWG because of all the entertainers and Doctors that were AFK while healing.

Gamer forgot to mention that it is looked DOWN upon by all true gamers. Macroing is for people who just want to ruin the game for everyone else, in essence, it's cheating. The game company's look down upon it also.
If gamer were a true gamer, he would have said that. But he's not, he sells them, so everyone on this site looks down on him too.
Macroing is for losers and freaks. Don't do it.

Ok I seriously want to discuss this with anyone that can do it in a civil fashion, and since you have not flamed me I will try with you.
I understand your problems with SWG, I too played SWG and it was annoying to see all those AFK dancers and doctors but in the long run neither of those classes were any fun to play.
Think about it a second.... Doctors, Medics, Dancers, Rangers, and a few other support classes had nothing else to do in that game but sit and heal or dance.
If it was like at the begining when you and a big group would go out hunting and after the fight the ranger built one of those great big medical centre type camps like in M*A*S*H and then the doctor would go to work and heal while the dancer danced. THAT was exciting, it gave everyone a feeling of uselfullness, unfortuneatly with mind buffs and all other buffs these types of grps became narrowly defined and only needed for 10 minutes by anyone else not to mention rangers who are completely useless.
As for EQ2 and this crafting macro i was talking about earlier, crafting is tedius, it is a solo thing i do just to make money and grind to higher levels in crafting, and i don't see how it affects your gameplay other than supplying a market with goods when i sell them to players or when i buy from other players.

I'm gonna create a character on your server and start macro crafting to 40 send me a tell when it gets to the point that it ruins the game for u.

Maybe your brain capacity is too small to understand, what if a lot more people did that? More armor at higher tiers, for their lazy asses less work. That means prices go down, and less money for the ones that actually play the game and not cheat.
I'm sure others will back me...we look down on you, freak.

Thats a weak argument considering how much more there is to crafting than that. You have to go out and harvest or buy enough materials and that takes time and limits the amount you have to craft, besides that if macroing became that popular the market would rebalance itself and all would be good in the world.
What do i do when I craft more items then I can sell quickly? I don't lower the price and shoot my self in the foot, I sell to the vendor and thats all there is to it.

oh my...do the game company's allow macroing?
they don't. Your argument smells like bullshit.

You know what? You're a bully.
Discussion with you always has to be at the lowest common denominator and I am done discussing anything with you.

Well in an attempt to get back at the purpose of this thread:
The macro Gamer is talking about is considered "illegal" by SOE and you can be banned for it. I'll let you decide for yourself wherther you want to risk it or not, but it is against the EULA.
My biggest tip is forget everything Anofayle told you, I'm sure he means well, but obviously doesn't play this game (or at least not very much). Don't ever run. If you think the Tank and the Healer don't see your problem run to them, NEVER run away from the group, UNLESS someone shouts for help and breaks the encounter. If you die and you think it was preventable, the Tank and Healer just weren't paying attention, you may want to find another group. As long as you were doing everything you were supposed, most people will have no problem grouping with you. I have a list of people that I won't group with at all, and I've passed this list on the guildies. It's a small server you don't want to get the rep of being bad for parties. Not knowing something and being new is one thing, not knowing, not listening and repeating mistakes is a whole 'nother ball game.

The only other things I can think of is, try to get into a guild. Pick a race/class combination you like as opposed to just looking at stats and picking the best race. You get more XP doing quests than you do just randomly killing things. Try to "double dip" there are a bunch of quests that have you killing the same type of creatures, if you get them both you get credit for both at the same time.
The user interface is totally customizable. You can have more than one Tool bar up at a time (right click and you'll see the option). You can re-size the tool bars by dragging the edges, so if you want it vertical just drag the edge until only one spot is open.
Those are the only general hints I can think of, if you have specific questions that would be easier.
ahhh yes, ofcourse, like Lineage II botting. That really balanced itself out well didnt it? No, it merely spoils it for those that do put in the time. You sit and macro all day while you arent there selling for half the price of someone that spends the time doing it completely on their own time and only able to make a fraction of what you do.
Remind me of UO, 7x Gm Tank mage, never saw a lick of combat before they were a 6x gm but hey, why should I care that someone macroed their way past me and is now trying to gank me to show off.

In the beginning everyone and their brother is gonna be calling you over for a quest in the city once you get off the island. It can seem overwhelming but don't worry, they are all saved nicely in your journal and you wont mess up by missing anything. Just take them as you can, what you want of them.
Start grouping young, the younger the better, that way you will get a start on learning group teamwork before alot of the harder parts of it come into play as being necassary. I would recommend grouping on the island of refugees and do all the quests there before you go.
Take a class that is really gonna be fun to you. Don't worry if you make mistakes in the beginning or don't understand what your doing. Its the end result thats more imporant and if you don't like your character in late levels the game is just gonna get old and sour to you. Research the class's, talk to people that have played that class and see if you like it. Ask for tips often, even in game, if you are unsure of something find a high level player in the zone lists that is of that class and just ask them if they have time for a few questions. I know if I were asked that in game I would certainly try to help out.
Don't get in a rush to get levels, the funnest part of an MMO is working to get there, once your there things can cool down excitement wise. Look forward to the advancements but don't just sit and grind levels to get to them. Take some time outs with crafting and questing, the quests are very good in EQ 2.
Try to avoid the spoiler sites for awhile, keep the game alittle mysterious for yourself. Let it be awesome and not facts and tidbits all lumped together into a game. When you get a quest, actually try to find the goals without help using the tips the game gave you. Can't finish the quest in a night, thats ok, its not going anywhere. It will still be safely in your journal when you finally do find what your looking for.
If you have any questions feel free to contact me privately through here or my email address in my profile, I would be glad to help.

Amen. Fadeus, Amen.
I have grouped with LOADS of different people and am still learning group tactics. Being a roleplayer I tend to gravitate toward fellow roleplayers and it tends become more and more fun teaching and being taught while keeping in character.
I dislike the people who "level grind" and I think it takes alot out of the roleplaying experience.
Learning is one thing, but being ignorant when you are higher in level is no excuse.
Note to all the higher level characters: Be patient with everyone.
Cleric finding her way through the world will at times venture out on her own, but she finds time when she is with other adventurers that the rewards are more frequent and greater. Becoming a hero is every adventurers goal, but no one should gain power before their time.

Double Dipping is where you get two quests for the same critter. For instance you get a quest in S. Qeynos that says kill 10 cave serpents, then get a quest from Willow Wood that says kill 10 cave serpents. Then go to the caves and kill 10 cave serpents you get credit for both quests only doing half the work.
