I have been playing MMO's since UO was first released. I played EQOA from start until even after the population died along with other older MMO's. I have played new age MMO's and the feeling that I used to get from them is gone. When I say new age MMO's I mean, World of Warcraft, EQII, Warhammer Online, ect. That feeling that I once had for MMO's seems to be gone. Newer games in general seemed to be dumb down and newb friendly. I am looking for a challenge, a game your casual gamer would pass up. By the way, "challenege" is not a F2P MMO that is a grind fest.
So what do I need your help with? If you are currently playing a MMO, no matter what the type, or population, if it still gives you that warm MMO feeling, post it here for me to try. I will greatly appreciate it, feel free to post your server and character name as well.
Thank you,
Gwazi

Should try Darkfall. I think it will give you that familiar warm fuzzy feeling.
Hey I'd give Darkfall a hard look. I won't repeat all the info on it here, but it's definitely different than the current pack - pretty challenging, combat that requires a different kind of skill (more twitch-like), open-ended and more player-created world, and takes quite a bit of time investment. Action is less common, but when it happens it's pretty intense due to higher stakes. Anyway, good luck in the search. I hear ya.
I checked out the screenshots, it looks cool. I have a couple questions. Do you have to pay for the download itself? Also, is there a monthly fee? If so, how much? Payment does not send me packing, I am just curious. Thanks for your replies!
First you need to know that it is a FFA full loot PvP sandbox.
It is a standard rate pay to play sub based mmo.
That is nothing new to me. That actually turns me on to the game even more. So you lose all your gear when someone kills you. Sounds exciting.
Unless it has changed in the last month, you pay something like $49.99 for the download and 1 month of playtime, then it's about $15 per month. I don't believe they offer a box, only download.
Yea i can only say good things about Darkfall too, its an awsome game that is just getting better every few months. its a challenge, no room for Care Bears. defiantly cheack it out. there is no free trial, but watch youtube videos of gameplay, get a feel for it, its worth it imo.
Playing EVE
Played Darkfall, Played Wow,
I'd say based on what you're saying, try out Darkfall or maybe Vendetta.
Check out the MUD I'm making!
What is Vendetta? If it is what i think it is, it is F2P correct? I think I have played that before. Time to go watch some youtube videos on DarkFall.
Maybe you could try fiesta? O_o -click here for site-
its not a grind fast xD and its free
The Fiesta trailer in the link you posted looks cool. Is it F2P or P2P?
*edit*Ill answer my own questions since you already said it was free.
Thanks for the recommendation but F2P with cash shops are not my style.
Check out Fallen Earth. It is a new mmo by Icarus. The learning curve is sharp and challenging. There are no classes. You are free to customize your avatar in your own play style. You can even used a melee weapon in one hand and a ranged weapon in the other hand. There is no "end game" per se; i.e., no raid content and no boss loot. Most items (armor, weapons, etc.) are crafted but can be crafted while moving or offline. Pvp is available in designated areas.
I have played FE since closed beta and can say that the devs are very interested in player feedback. You can find all the information you need on the official forums. And before you ask, you have to purchase the game and pay a monthly fee; however, you get what you pay for.
The game is set in post-apocalyptic Arizona (the Grand Canyon area). It is faction based, and I head a Traveler only clan of 70+ members. The Travelers are the survivors of the Mafia who came from Las Vegas and introduced the money system of poker chips. I lead a Traveler only clan of approximately 70 members. Our website is www.rapidfire.webnite.net. If you want more details about the game, send an email to rfclanleader@gmail.com.
I know you think you heard what I said, but I'm not sure what you heard is what I meant.
Well, Fallen Earth or DarkFall is what I have boiled my search down to. I have done research on DarkFall, looks amazing. Now it is time to go research Fallen Earth.
I reccomend FFXI if you haven't tried it. It has an emphasis on groups. Groups for leveling, groups for doing storylines, groups for instances/endgame. You can solo, but it's slower than grouping. It's 8 years old and has a very healthy population. Not casual friendly since players can play for months and still not get max level. It has a harsh death penalty (you lose 10% exp tnl and you can delevel), and you can level all the jobs on one character (there's 20) so it has tons of content. Even raising a mount takes like a month irl. It's $20 for the original game and all expansions with a month free, you can get it off of D2D or Steam. I like old school non casual MMO's myself, and I've tried them all. FFXI def the best.
Playing - EVE, Wurm
Retired - Final Fantasy XI, Anarchy Online, Mabinogi
Waiting - ArcheAge, Salem
I second the FFXI motion. FFXI to me (only my opinion) is closer to what your are looking for than anything else. If your trying to get that oldschool EQ feeling back, FFXI is the game to do it. No NPC's with exclamation points, heck you don't even get XP for completing quests most of the time. The rewards are usually more "useful" and alot of times the quests are extremely challenging. The storyline alone in FFXI makes it worth its weight in gold. The zones are huge, and travel is not "easy" like it is in other games. There are alot of things to do in FFXI that will give you that awesome feeling again..
Also, I have to mention this. You said you played EQOA? Well, me and a friend who have been wanting to go back to that game for years now found out that alot of people are apparently playing (considering how old it is.) There is a pretty active facebook page dedicated to it, and everyone has moved to CLW. I saw a video someone posted on youtube trying to get people to play again, he showed tv screen and there were 140 people in Freeport and he stated that that server was just as populated as it was on release. Me and my friend have been trying to get in for the past few days. I've had issues trying to connect to the game and even called SOE but no luck yet. I suggest strongly thinking about EQOA again or FFXI. EQOA was one of the best games I have ever played.. not sure why.. there was just something about it.. It definitely lived up to the "adventures" in its name in my opinion. I'd look closely at FFXI and EQOA over any of the other choices.. but thats just me.

Thanks for everybody's feedback. Right now I have decided to get into Darkfall. I have been playing for a couple hours and could not be happier with what I am experiencing. It is a very hardcore MMO experience. My buddy, who is a WoWhead asked me about it, he told me to rate it. I haven't been playing long enough to do that but I can tell you that i did not waste my money, and that it is not a easy mode game. It is not newb friendly and I love that about it. So far there is a lot to do. Good luck everyone.
I'd be curious to see a post from you after a few days of play. I too bought Darkfall and had exactly the same stuff to say about it until a few days later, when it really just hit me dead in the face that there was nothing to do but gank people. If your looking for rich PVE it will take a few days for you to find it missing from the game. I liked how large the world was, but I hated the FPS twitchiness of it, it may be what you want. I just would like to see what your opinion of the game is after a few days, maybe even as long as a week of play. I've read story after story, where the player was in love with the game the first couple of days and then a week later they hated it. For whatever reason. Just let us know how you like it a week from now. Enjoy your new game!
