Thanks for posting this. It's a really good read. I knew about the killer rabbits but I didn't know this was how they came about. That has to be one of the most hilarious side effects of a system that sounds great but ends up being not-so-great in implementation.
If you liked UO you should really try Mortal Online. It is very inspired on UO but with several own unique feats. It's made by people that played UO for years. I really recommend it. It's very promising. Some feats here ...
Skill based
tame animals (horses and pets)
Magic schools
torches
PvP (full loot) with flag system
FPV only
no minimap or maps (player made maps will come later)
build your own house almost where ever you want
build bridges etc ...
no minimap
seamless loading
High mountains you can climb
advance crafting
Focus on real player skill than on levels

Ah yes, Raph Koster, the brains behind the development of Star Wars Galaxies. I thought everyone here already knew about his blog and just stopped being interested. Heh.
He comes off a bit arrogant sometimes, but if you can ignore that tone in his posts, you'll find a lot of very thoughtful concepts and ideas on his site that relate to everything about your interests in MMORPGs. His blog should be in everyone's favorites, it's too good to overlook.
I am in beta already, got a Lootbag ordered so yeah, i know about it :P
Wow interesting stuff on how things came about back then! Still light years ahead of many games that are out today.
Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!
Indeed, that's what's so interesting about it.
One problem, it's in the first person mode. That alone is going to keep a portion of UO fans away. I'm a die hard UO fan but the top down view is one the of unique things about UO's combat and game play. I'll be passing on MO and waiting for a true UO clone.

Well Said, though It's never gonna happen! Whos going to make a triple A MMORPG thats isometric?
It seems counter intuitive, but for me the Isometric View adds so much immersion to the gameplay. In a way it mimmics real life perception a lot more, in so much that you have a small limited view, but you see everything in it, but you can't see past a few meters. Kinda like me stuck in my cubicle now, lol. I know where every pen , paper and book is, what the guy behind me is doing and what not, but there are walls.
From a PVP it makes full loot viable, cause its a lot easier to run away with an isometric view. Once you are out of view you can change directions fast, hide under a bush, port away, or do a number of things. In games like WOW, I can chase a hordie across 3 zones before he either gets stuck on some branch, or gets rooted, or gets to town safely.
That's pretty much a desription of DFO as it is now, wether MO will actually pony up those features at launch is a matter for debate in my opinion.
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"
CS Lewis
It's sad that years ago they had idea like this, yet every game that comes out is simply "kill 10 boar quests" to max level, then grind dungeons/mobs for gear... rinse and repeat.
Once again its evident how EQ damaged the amazing genre this could have been if future games based more on UO.

The top-down view is still pretty large, not in the form of MMO but still being done, for example Heroes of Newerth, Diablo 3, and RTS games. Diablo 3 will most likely blow just about every game on this site out of the water in terms of sales and online play sans WoW and it's a top-down played game. Games like HoN and DOTA house millions of players. A new UO on a new engine with some stellar graphics with the top-down 3rd person view would be pretty boss.

I completely agree. I, too would prefer isometric 2d (pseudo 3d) over full 3d. 2d make the game easier to get into, can provide emergent gameplay faster and overall gives you a classic wonderful feeling.

Well Diablo almost got the same view as UO. So should be sellable!
Playing: League of Legends!
I didn't detect any arrogance.
