The only difference that most likely will play a role here is DX10. Does your VGA or your planned VGA upgrade include DX10 support? Sooner or later, the answer will be - Yes.
Then, the right question should be: Why not Win7?

Because most games are dx9 and even whendx10 is present dx9 often runs faster becuase xp is faster than vista and w7 with dx10.

So basiclly, speed with mid to low range parts = xp wins everytime; speed with high range parts = xp still wins, but w7 is closer; best picture with best parts= w7 in games that support dx10.

That is why switching to w7 is never a good idea unless u need 64-bit processing for some reason or your gettigna  new computer and want to buy a cheap os (there are always ways to get OS cheap, edu or firends of friends or other more dishonest ways ).

In 3 more years you will want w7 64-bit, but until then im stickign with xp, becuase its free (i own 2 copies w/ unlimited installs) and becuase its faster (and requires less machine).

But i do miss not checking that dx10 box :)

xp is faster than vista and w7 with dx10.

I have a dualboot of xp and win7, and none of my games run faster on my machine with XP than win7.

Win7 actually runs AOC, WoW, WAR and DA:O faster.

    Playing Dafkfall:

I just changed windows 7 (64) to my computer. Had xp 32 earlier. Everything else is same: nvidia 8800 512, intel dual core E6850 3.0 but now i have 6 gigs memory instead 2 i had with xp

My ping went from 30s to 50s and my fps dropped from 160 to 110

So tripled the memory and still windows 7 is over 30% heavier than xp...

Jesus, stop making such crappy assumptions when you obviously don't understand anything about it.

well... i do have my ping and fps visible in my gui. And I've been looking at those for several months now. And when I changed W7 to my Computer:

"My ping went from 30s to 50s and my fps dropped from 160 to 110". Now thats a fact.

I said while playing Darkfall with my computer,  Windows 7 is over 30% heavier than XP, based on my ping and FPS value.

Is that crappy because you dont like the results? Or what is it?

you have to bear in mind too that no companies have decent 7 graphics drivers.

none. and if you think nvidia will have them working properly anytime soon, dont hold out.

ATIs mobility drivers are fairly stable but still in beta and have a lot of crap left in them. give it 6months and we can actually begin to make benchmark comparisons about xp to 7.

what I will say is it actually looks very nice. similar to vistard yet somehow, a whole lot more pleasing. the improved taskbar previews are snazzy for one. installation took a whoppingly small 25mins from inserting the disc - that shits crazy!

I'm not sure if I can add much more to the thread than what has been said but I have been running Windows 7 for a couple months and I have to say it's the best operating system I have used by far.

It runs all the games/software I have installed and gives excellent performance overall; however, I am running with a quad core processor with 4 gigs of DDR3 and an HD4870.

I'd recommend anyone with the money to get Windows 7. It j provides better window management, provides excellent search features missed out by XP, gives DX10 and 11 support, and it actually works.

If however any program only works on XP you have the XP mode option to use to fix the problem.

To put it frank, anyone telling you to stick with windows xp is an idiot, unless you're machine can't handle win 7. Done.

It is crappy cause you have no idea what causes it.

Only thing I changed in my computer was Windows 7 so yes it was the first thing to come to my mind when performance dropped.

But are you going to keep this conversation at this level or are you going to help me please and tell me what caused the performance drop?

To be honest I have a little diffuculty to see why would you comment like that with out elaborating the issue...

There are many other factors related to this than OS itself, biggest factor are drivers.

So if windows 7 has poor drivers and you loss fps wityh those poor drivers xp is still faster right. Just like i said, it has a larger footprint and requirement and thus will run games slower. (mayeb if you have wonderful god computers then sure change, but most people that are asking, "should i changed to 7 from xp" proabably don't have wonderful god computers [maybe not bad ones]).

Very big test but only looks at using the best setups (no 5xxx series) But like 275 sli and 4890 xfire. Basiclly windows 7 preforms a bit under xp with single card and a bit better with duel gpu's ( single god like cards). So basiclly once agian if you don't have a god machine don't switch to w7. (For now give it 2-3 years or when you want to buy a new computer, and  in that time all the drivers will be worked with and compatability will go up. And you'll safe time, money, and preformence).

Look what happens if you use a super old computer (which a ton of people have).

Edit - had to add this i used links becuase obviously people make up a ton of stuff on these forums due to their bias.

Looking at gaming benchmarks from firingsquad and elsewhere, most games perform close enough to each other to not matter, some are even faster on Win7 and some (probably more) are faster on XP. But overall for the gain of DX10/DX11, general OS usability and user experience, and continuation of support I'd recommend Win7 on any new hardware, dual core w/2gb ram or more - but if you have XP and are happy with it I don't know that $100 is worth it, I do like Win7's feel much more than XP though.

The larger footprint of Win7/Vista does bog older computers down, I definitely wouldn't suggest it on a single core CPU like the one tested in the overclockers link. But once you overcome the hardware req to meet this footprint then the OS doesn't necessarily slow the system down a meaningful amount relative to WinXP.

Also I can't speak for your Darkfall results, I'd need more information on your experience - I can't tell if you were on XP and had 140fps in the newbie area then installed Win7 and had 110fps in the main town the next day, did you dual boot and just test them one after the other in the same area with the same characters around?

BTW, Win7 can use Vista drivers, so it inherits established driver support and 1-2 years won't change it. The difference has to be inherent to the kernel/driver model changes going from WinXP to Vista/7.
