Honestly, I stopped caring about a WAR40K MMO when I found out that the combat will be closer to Tabula Rasa than a proper real-time combat game, like it should be. I think that if the combat was done like in Gears of War, it would be a pretty amazing MMO.
As far as space marines go, even though there are other factions in the WAR40K universe, the space marines are the most known of the bunch, closely followed by the orks. Not having space marines as a playable race will fail to attract all but the most hardcore WAR40K fans.
Because Marines are basicly the Jedi of the 40k universe. If you make them Panzies like they are In the table top game they would suck and not hold up to lore. A squad of Guardiens runs into a lone Marine... they die... Fun A squad of Guards men runs into a lone Marine... they die... Fun A squad of Ork Boys runs into a lone Marine... they die... Fun A squad of Genstealers runs into a lone Marine... they die... Fun Ect ect. In the Lore a Lond tac squad would take on a Small army and win. Only other option is Not alow the Marines. Thats the path Id prefer, and If its all marines then I likely wont be playing the game. Got screwed with Warhammer online aint gana do that again.
The big problem with the WH40K lore is that it was screwed from the start.
I read the original stuff back in the late '80s? Early '90s...
And the guy(s) who wrote it were idiots. "1000 Chapters of 1000 marines..."? THAT should never have got past the editor.
They limited themselves from the start and wrote the lore badly. They could not seem to decide how powerful the Marines were supposed to be and they completely messed up the scale of the world in relation to how the marines fitted in.
The marines themselves are close to what R Heinlein was describing in "Starship Troopers" (the big ugly gorilla) but the amount of power they wield (and tactics they employ) always seemed wrong.
Lmao I agree. But the Lore has evolved and stabalised since then. Hell back in the day you could use Chaos to play in Both games ;p
But sorta like the Avatar of Kaine, Lore made him out to be the badest thing around.. and point for point he was. But he just wasent "Fluff"
Hell its like STO It will never make the hardcore Trekies happy. Same here. It will never be perfect. Would be nice though.

Well the point I was trying to make is that WAR40K has so much more to explore and make a game out of then just Space Marines/Chaos Space Marines. I hope the devs of this game do not fall into the trap of catering to the lowest common denominator in terms of the creativity of designing the game world and player characters. Oh and yes I know the game is still a long ways away but its never to early for discussion on what potential players/fans would like out of this game.
Anyways here is an example the Dark Herey line of Pen and Paper game which is focused around other aspects of the Warhammer 40K universe. You could very well create an entire MMORPG based around this PnP game and still not have Space Marines (The Jedi's of the 40K world) be the main focus meanwhile you are still well within the ethos of the WAR40K IP.
Here is an excerpt of the description of the rules and career book of this WAR40K PnP based game. Imagine if this were turned into a MMORPG??
Packed with new rules and careers, as well as all manner of essential gear, the Inquisitor's Handbook is perfect for players and Game Masters alike. Features Advanced character generation, alternative ranks, and Calixian careers including the Black Priests of Maccabeus, Metallican Gunslingers, and the Adepta Sororitas. With a host of weapons and gear, advice on establishing alter egos and informative contacts, plus in-depth commentary on the Calixis Sector, this tome covers everything you need to create a completely unique character in the 41st Millennium.
Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.
Now as to a mmofps. NO ONE WILL PLAY THAT...Look at tabula rasa and the ill fated Hellgate london.
Not one of those games was an MMOFPS. I'm not sure you understand what the term means. But okay, have fun with your crap MUD-based combat in a 40K skin.
Did the developers say that there where only marines as playable faction, or is that just a assumption? If this was the case, it was kind of disappointing. Even though it would be acceptable if the game was overall well designed, better then WAR. I hope Games Workshop will take care of that this time.
Imo Space Marines being so powerful is not such a big problem, since other fractions have:
This guy:
Or that guy:
Or even this guy:
The problem with the imperial guard is that a unmodified human is quite weak against all that monsters that other factions have. The solution could be to give the imperial guard a stealthy class or a pet-class with a couple of guardmen-“pets”.
By the way: Even though one Space Marine is very strong, 1000 x 1000 Space Marines don’t mean much in a Universe with zillions of aliens an heretics. The main weapon of the imperium is the imperial guard with its millions or regiments.
to be honest, im for and against any MMO based on warhammer 40k the simple reason is its extreamly hard to pull off.
where you CAN make a warhammer mmo quite simply... a 40k is alot more complex. setting it as marine only has its pro and cons, pros being the marines are viewed as the best of the best... most mmo'ers want to be the best... but also on the con side.. marines are viewed as noob-cannons with legs, not to say a marine isnt hard to kill.. if you use the TT weapon sets you can 1 hit a marine easy enough
but honest you have to ask your self what you would rather play as..
marine and have a 50/50 shot at surviving most battles or a guardsmen and die every time.. or maybe you favour chaos and like that high % of being possessed and turned in to either a pile of goo or some mutated freak with six arms coming out of their crotch... then again if you play as ork.. good luck partying as most orks would sooner kill you then help you... as strong dont need help right?
then you have both eldar.. one a perverted group of pirates and the other a bunch of pompus rejects cause we all really love being all ladeedadee dont we??
im not even going to talk about the nids... but 2 words.... (can on raid plz) but honestly im not supised if they wanted to set the game as marine only simply because its easier to play as a marine then a guardsmen.
hell just look at the stats for a marine vs other races (not counting chaos as they are marines too)
4/4/4/4/1/7/9 <-basic TT marine stats using a standard vet sargent.
3/3/2/2/1/7/8 <- as i recall is basic gaurdsmen stats (being as they are weak humans...
soo what would you rather play as ?? a super human tank.. or cannon fodder... one has a powerful rifle and access to the best armor and weapons.. the other has an overpowered flashlight that brings to mind the sound effect of pew pew with much screaming and swearing (from the user ... laughter from the target...)
tho im waiting to hear more on this game before i pass judgement on it. (ps i have played TT for damn near 4 yrs atleast.. tho im a marine player i did dabble in ver 3 chaos and some dark eldar.)
New article from the devs of Warhammer 40k "It will have an RPG feel, there will be extensive gunplay, and all races important to Warhammer 40k lore will be included." www.massively.com/category/warhammer-40k/

Each race in the TT world is balanced off against each other.
The Guard's strength is in its Armor vehicles, heavy weapons and raw numbers. On the defense they are near unbeatable and their armored cavalry charges are about unstoppable. How this can be brought out in an MMO, I have no clue.
...And I totally disagree on your statement that a Warhammer Fantasy MMO is "simple" to pull off vs 40k. Last I checked WAR crashed harder then a piano falling from a 10 story window. They are down to 4 live servers now.
I one could handle it in a way that one can at start chose between a space marine scout (who later becomes a real marine) and a guard veteran that would be able to develop in a different way.
In fact there is a big gap between the Space Marines fluff wise and rules wise in the tabletop game. So the stats in the game are still much to low. In the fluff they are described much like super heroes.
In the matter of the tyranids, there is really a problem, since they are no individuals but controlled by the hive mind, much like the Borg in ST.
One good thing about the game being all marine would be, that it is much more consistend if there are all marine groups instead of a group consisting of an orc, a chaos marine and a dark elder.

At least WAR40k MMO can be the EQ of Starcraft MMO.
War40k is to Starcraft MMO
as
EQ is to Warcraft MMO

FIRST ASK YOURSELF
What will most likely change, so that the game fits a into a good MMORPG gameplay value.
