It's a rather idealised vision of a medium sized* fleet battle; in theory the battle could look like that if you had a rendering workstation for a PC, and you for some reason toggled off all your info readouts, and the server was suddenly immune to lag.
Still, no-one expects adverts to present a wholly realistic and mundane vision of the product.
*looked to be about ~150 per side, which is a pretty everyday sized fleet fight.
Oh, I'm definitely looking forward to it. The nerd in me was pretty much oohing and aahing at practically everything in the trailer. Plus, looking at the new changes, I'm really looking forward to seeing the effect that will be taking place in 0.0 space.
Unfortunately, it looks like I'm going to have to leave my npc corp a lot sooner than I had prepared for...
There was a discussion out on the eve forums about the vid and how 'unrealistic' it was, followed by a post linking like 4 or so fleet action vids showing equivalent graphic viewing that also brought the UI up and the like.
I really like some of the comments in that thread too -- especially the one explaining how the advanced camera stuff could be toggled on. You see I accidentally changed my camera without knowing what I'd done so had this "float next to" type of view of my ship that'd only pan around the ship all the time and I couldn't figure out how to turn the damned effect off. The comments about it helped me figure out where to look to get back to the more normal "ship centered on screen" viewing. *snicker*
Perhaps you should go look there and watch those player made videos. I found the fleet training one, on tactics, pretty decent and I like how they did the fly-by startup view -- I think it was a brutix they flew by with it.
IN other words, that's how the graphics look with a good system. Mine isn't really great but I've seen some pretty nice battles of 100ish ships in the game... Haven't seen any huge battles but I didn't get any bad lag with my system with a bit over a hundred ships there. Tthen again, I've only been playing about 3 months so far fo there's still a lot for me to see.

Do it man, you know you want to. Go join red vs blue for a couple of weeks to get some PvP experience, then jump in.
even with the controversy of the delayed super carrier changes it is shaping up to be an awesome expansion. A lot of the chnages are going to help make life easier for those in command.
The fleet finder is going to put an end to people having to spam x in a channel or ask for the fleet link all the time.
The new mail system is going to make life a hell of a lot easier for the directors and corp leaders out there.
And those that complain about the trailer being false advertising, I beg to differ. In fact it's one of the most truthfull trailers I think you will see out there not just because off the visuals but because of the fleet chatter they added as well.
One of the reasons that I just love Eve online is that you know the game will have atleast Two free expansions a year. Expansions get people excited to play the game. Eve is constantly evolving and unlike other mmos that only give content to high level players Eve spreads the love around. Tweaks to Probing/scanning, Faction Warfare, New mission arcs, New player experience, SoV, New Faction ships,Graphics upgrades, Ship rebalancing. This is all in just one year. Constantly adding to the game keeps eve from being stale. Very few MMOs deliver that much new shit to its mmo player base.
You forgot wormhole space, which IMO was the most significant change this year.

What I'd love is for them to get rid of all the gay UI in game so you could actually see the 3d graphics rather than the 2d UI.
