Looking for an MMO for my nephews, 9 and 11. They've played Club Penguin, and they talked about Free Realms. Any other good ones out there? Is Wizard 101 any good? Also, any good ones coming up over the horizon? (I heard about Lego Universe...)
There is also Earth Eternal and Fusion Fall. Earth Eternal has minimal chat restrictions. All the others can be strict on what is said in open chat.

Honestly, even my girlfriend (17) and I (16) had a good time in Wizard 101 until she got frustrated with one quest and gave up. I can't remember what it was but I think it was just a case of her impatience, which is ironic considering I'm usually the impatient one. It's got some really neat cinematics in battle, however, and it'll definitely appeal to any wizard fan.
I haven't personally tried Free Realms but I've heard good things.
Toontown also shouldn't be left out. You only get the first area (Toontown Central) in a free account (not like Wizard 101 is much different =P) but it's actually good fun and after playing through all of Toontown Central and parts of other areas on my little brother's account, I can say I enjoyed it. Cog buildings could be especially fun. Call me crazy, but it was a well-built kids MMO. The only downside is the lack of support for grouping. All quests seem to be random in objective.
Earth Eternal could be considered a kids MMO, but it's also a WoW clone, and as such could get frustrating for kids at times.
EDIT: On another note, as a kid who grew up with Legos, and seeing as I have a brother that's still obsessed with them, I'm pretty stoked about Lego Universe. It'll be purely amazing to see what you're able to do in-game.
EDIT2: I'd only suggest Fusion Fall to fans of Cartoon Network. Otherwise, it's pseudo-3rd-person-shooter deal and Cartoon Network theme might get boring fast. Also, seeing as the color-palette isn't very bright, it might not be appealing to all kids.
So I would let the big one try WoW (its a great game for kids if you monitor them) i.e. don't let them get involved in Barrens Chat and if it has a chat filter (can't remember), turn it on. I've noticed WoW is also a lot less frustrating than its clones and is becoming more casual slowly. and Free realms for the smaller one. Or Wizard 101.

WoW, it was basically designed with 9 year olds in mind. You'd be hard pressed to find a simpler one.

Oh and metalhead, don't you play EvE?
That's quite the diversity going on there. Heh.
Dude I have seven PCs in my home four kids, my wife and my brother than rents out the basement of my home and of course myself.
At any give time after about 6pm YOu have WoW, FR, W101 and Eve going on at the same time LOL!

So i heard one of your basement is up for grabs? the money is already in your bank
My 12 year old sister rocked EQ 2 for a while. She was playing WoW too. Of course she couldn't do anything important like group, raid, pvp but she was able to solo it up and kill monsters and level. The best part about it is that she knew more about her characters and what gear to use more than most of the failures you see running around WoW trying to act like they are good. She got bored of both of them and is on to new things.
12 year olds could play DAoC, which was a fairly complex and difficult game. Therefore, anyone above the age of 9 should handle WoW without breaking a sweat.
Had a time with Free Realms. Absolutely love the game. Kids would definitely get a kick out of it. It's very interactive. Has a lot of quests & fun mini games to do. Plus its cheap at only $5/mo.
My nephew plays Free Realms or Wizard 101 and likes both. His mom likes Wizard 101 more.
Both pretty good and both are free to play. They both have microtransactions set ups but they arent bad with it. Only problem I could imagine is that Free Realms is a streaming MMO which needs a good internet connection.

I have 4 kids between 12 and 9 and they all want to play everything that I would let them. We currently have a family pass to Wizard 101 which they enjoy playing....you get a discount for additional family members that sign up. The kids have played Club Penguin and Toontown mostly as I wont let them play games were they can be exposed to stuff they dont need to see/hear yet, although they probably hear worse at school!. Free Realms is another good one they dabbled with but none of the kids stuck with it as we live in Aus and the streaming data thing can be a bit of a pain with out inherent latency issues.
I was considering letting my 2 eldest try WOW because all their friends do ...... maybe the new Cataclysm expansion will wipe the Barrens so I can be comfortable with them playing Whatever you chose just keep your on on the kids....much like us they would spend all day playing if you let them!
UO beta, etc etc ---> present day. Currently in LOTRO while waiting for another DAOC to arrive!.

why don't you buy your kids a football and teach them how to play outside?

Is there something that leads you to believe he doesn't ALREADY do this? Presumptuous, aren't you? Perhaps his nephews like to do a VARIETY of things?

You know one of the major things kids do besides playing outside is gaming right? i live in canada and the weather here isnt necessarily always good for playing outside and gaming here is quite popular.

Well....since he's their UNCLE, and not their PARENT....I think he's entitled to just do some purely fun things with them sometimes, maybe, and leave the "parenting" to the parents......
My aunt used to take us out horseback riding AND play video games with us. I never realized how RADICAL that was, but...it must sound that way. Gosh....a variety of fun things to do! Why limit it to indoors or out?? Why not BOTH?
You really kind of took this down a silly path here when the guy is just asking for some suggestions for fun kids' games, ya know?

Good derailment of the thread though....I'll give ya that.

Check out the MUD I'm making!
My oldest son is ten and he plays WoW along with my Wife.
My daughters ( Age 9 & 7) play Wizard101 since they love harry potter and bugged me for a while to Download it and get it for them.
The game runs flawless on Two cheap 200 buck netbooks.
As for my little one (age 6) He likes free realms.
So I would let the big one try WoW (its a great game for kids if you monitor them) and Free realms for the smaller one.
PLaying: EvE, Ryzom
Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum
