    Official Servers:
    EA Ruleset
    Official Expansions ... etc
    Not really good RP
    Regular monthly fee
    Official Map etc

    Free Shards:
    Managed by Players
    They can have completely new Rules (mostly in the section PVP/RP)
    They can have new scripts and Items not on the official Servers
    They can have new Landmass etc (create their own world)
    Custom Housing and Landscaping
    They can use the Version they want (ie. T2A, etc)
    No monthly fee
    Much less players
    The Server Emu Software which are around, aren't really that stable and bugfree (on the other Side the official servers aren't either)


    Basically in Free Shards Player can do what they weren't able on the official Shards ....
    Soon after EA has taken OSI over I went to a RP Freeshard and I'm glad I did,
    there are many different Free Shard's around with different priorities on different things, so you have to search around to find a suitable Shard

       Download a copy of UOgateway and try a few out if Saranum's post didn't clear it up for you. This is kind of a hot topic since I've heard different views on the legality of free servers.

    Funny you asked, cause there's a 1/500 chance to get an EV llama (just like OSI) on this shard. http://www.metropolisshard.com - PreUOR:1999 OSI type shard. Really professional.

    Yeah USA, though there are some europeans and even people as far as asia playing it (not many). Average 200+ players.

    With all these free UO shards out there its' hard to choose but if you like PreR this is the jackpot.

    I used to screw around on free shards with friends when I played UO, but I neve really wanted to commit myself because I was tied down the main servers with guilds and friends.

    Now that I'm done playing UO, I might come back to a free server.

    Are there any servers with active orc guilds, like there were on the main servers?

    if your looking for a good freeshard try Defiance..best one out there. factions, quests, capture the flag..close to 800 people at peak time
