I used to spend weeks building ship kits and putting nacelles in odd configurations, but putting a saucer onto the main frame... AWESOME IDEA! Just from a artistic standpoint I want to play this game for awhile.

o man i cant wait to shoot me some dominion ships tho it would be cool if at some point they make the Dominion a playable faction, to me they have some of the coolest ship designs, i also liked the Breen ships. Sucks that the only playable factions at launch will be starfleet and klingon starfleet is ok but i never liked the way the klingon ships looked id rather the romulans had been playable there big Warbirds looked nice so did the remens scimitar

I've only been partially following the storyline. Does that first screenshot mean that the Federation is fighting the Dominion, the Borg, the Romulans AND the Klingons? If I remember my DS9, it took help from the Klingons AND Romulans to beat back the Dominion. Doesn't sound rational to me. Maybe I've got the plot all wrong.

The Path to 2049  is everything you need to know from the events of the last star trek movie/shows (not including the Abrams one) right up until the very point you jump into the game.

Short answer, Federation are on the bring of war with the Klingons, the Romulans fell apart and are too busy trying to recover to do anything, the Borg are out there and are ready to come back with a vengeance. I don't know exactly where the Dominion is, I thought they were defeated to some extent, but they could easily have a resurgence.

More nebulas....does any part of the STO universe NOT have nebulas?

Ok, thanks. I've tried to avoid that thread because it looks like you have to read it backward to get the full progression of events. I read through it and get it now. So, we have conflict with the Klingon Empire, instability in the Romulan Empire, Borg (and possibly Dominion threats), increasing pirate activity (mentioned Nausican pirates) and growing unrest within the Federation itself. Should be lots to keep us busy.

I'm going to pull the geek card out here for a minute.  I know I'm being anal, but here goes.

    1. Why in the second screenshot are there two different colored phasers from the small ships' phaser banks?  I don't remember ships with multi-colored phasers.  Or are some coming from the larger vessel?  To me it looks like only the smaller vessel is firing and the larger taking the hits.
    2. Why are there colored trails behind each of the ships engines?  I don't remember a time when impulse speeds would cause a visual like that.  I guess it's just for effects apparently since this isn't the first Star Trek game to do that.
    3. I'm also not sure why in the second screenshot the phaser lines gets larger the further from the smaller vessel it gets.  Generailly speaking phasers are tactically targetted and usually the beam leaving the firing vessel is the same size when it hits the target vessel as shown in the first screenshot.

I think the answer to all those questions is stylization to render information. Happens alot in games.

Not to mention the fact that Screen Shots can only do a game so much justice. SS:3D game play may look diff the Phaser mite APPEAR to get larger in the SS,could be do to movement, effects a lot of stuff. and Im pretty sure the GREEN laser is the smaller ships. Oh and not to mention it is a game ,and some times to communicate TYPES of attacks in PvP, Pve or while in a party could be important to make diff. types of attack a diff color.

they could just be in the press release screenshots and not all the game to show  off, but how likely is that?

Did something happen in the future where ALL (or almost all) of space has become a big colorful nebula?    That's all you ever see in these screen shots.

You know this reminds me of when I was in the 1st grade and all the kids had to make Santa Claus faces with cotton balls for his beard.   I thought the beard and the cotton balls were SO cool, that I put them literally all over Santa's face.  WAY too many  (practically only his eyes were showing).    The only thing that accomplished was to make the other kids laugh.  Even my MOM chuckled at it,  when we had an evening parent visitation and our Santa faces were displayed on the wall.

All of STO space FILLED end to end with Nebulas is only going to make the kids (and the developers' moms)  laugh.

It has more to do with the face Space is just a big black void, the contrails are there to give a sense of movement.

I guess I can buy that.  Without the trails they would have to always have a point of reference to even know whether your moving or not.  Though like others have pointed out it seems there are nebulas' everywhere so no shortage on reference points.

Btw, not a virgin.  My Star Trek nerdiness came from pre-marriage years.  Ah the good ol' days when I could sit aorund all day and watch Star Trek.  /tear
