I took the long plunge...

So I had known and very loosely followed Darkfall for years, I think I first heard of it back right before EQ2 launched. I remember the idea of it sounded amazing and it feel off my radar over time.

Anyways since the game came back to life as a reality I followed it. I watched beta leaks and read beta reviews. I red post launch impressions. I wanted the game but I was turned off by how negative people spoke of it, how those defending it were negative themselves, the venom that was forumfall and a fear of playing in a game world full of griefers and people who feel the need to trash talk you 24/7 oh and then of course hackers.

Life got busy...dropped off my radar again. Well for about a month now I have been debating on what MMO to dive into, been since last Feb. since I played one really.

It was between Aion and Darkfall....I began to watch a lot of videos, lurk forums...and hype myself up for both.

Two of my friends play Aion and are excited to have me join them (not told them I will not be coming over). They praised the game so I bought it. I played it and let me say the game looks great, sounds great and really for what it aims to be I feel it did a great job.

I am burnt out though, since EQ1 every MMO I have played follows the point, click press 1213321 type of method and worse they get easier. I mean EQ was amazing but also a hard game that had a great system of Risk vs. Reward, this has been lost. No longer do I fear mobs ever, and if I should fear them they are in some bright red color with arrows pointing all different ways making sure i know beforehand that this one could possibly kill me! Oh but if you do die...death penalites are nill. Aion is more harsh then some lately but still I feel no sense of danger.

I find I fall into this mode now where I know exactly what to expect. Oh quest for a new player, oh right kill these ultra easy things, now gather this and move on to the next series of the same but without different wording until you get to a point where you can run a dungeon.

I like dungeons, well made ones that is, the rest I am sick of. I also have grown more fond of PvP, which to me seems funny. I mean all the youngsters seem to love PvP...my friends the older they get seem to enjoy deeper PvE and social things....I find the older I get the more I tire of mindless pve mobs and desire PvP. Case in point the game I currently am addicted to is League of Legends which is all team based tactical pvp.

Ok wow long post here....anyways, even though I still have red lights going about Darkfall, I could not withstand the urge to try it for myself. I watch the videos and I see a world not just a backround and just from the vids I get a sense of exploration.

 TDLR ;

I am downloading the client now and I am wondering...

1) There are two NA servers correct? Which would be best to join?

2) Race matter much? I am leaning towards the Orcs or the Mahrim? (wolf people)

3) Any sort of newbie helper clan or anything to look into while I learn the game?

4) I hear people talk about using macros to do things. I admit I never used them, I have played games where the majority did, like say in EQ2 with crafting but I always enjoyed even if it was a tiresome grind, doing it myself. However if it is a huge deal to macro how does one go about doing so? Game provide the means to do so or do you write scripts? Confused on this.

5) I never played a classless game...so for skills do I just make sure to alternate them keep them leveled? Like begin with magic, kite a bit with my bow and then finish with melee? Or how does it work?

Anyways I am excited and wary all at once, I really hope the game works for me and is amazing otherwise I will have wasted 100+ dollars...OUCH!

Hey Sandblox, I posted a similar thread when I was trying darkfall and it really helped me out - good suggestions.  Check it out:

I agree with your attitude.  Read the blah blah blah but ultimately try it yourself.  Good luck.

Oh, and there's a guild called "NEW" that takes on beginners for 30 days to help you out and give you access to a player city.  I joined up with them and they were excellent.  Hit them up when you get in game if you're on NA-1.  Not sure if they're on other servers (there was only 1 NA server anyway when I played).  And btw there are no race restrictions on guilds - any race can join - but the NEW city is close to the human starter area (unless they moved since I last played a few weeks ago.)

Welcome to Darkfall.  There is one NA server and one EU server.  Feel free to pm me with any questions.

Why did you waste 100 dollars? Game is 50 bucks and first month free (unless you include Aion purchase for whatever reason)

Expansion is coming out on THURSDAY btw, many new changes and things introduced

    1) There is 1 Us server and 1 European server, so you being american would play on the only US server

    2) Orks hit harder with axes and mahirim have a sprint bonus I think (thursday expansion)

    3) Check out Clan NEW on the ingame clan tab, they will help you out with a city, protection, money armor and advice

    4)  No one macros anymore since the skill gain on mobs is much greater on mobs

    5) there is a thread here on mmorpg.com fora made by xipher that outlines the things you must do to be conpetitive in a month of gameplay, check that for guidelines

Great thank you for the replies, I will look into clan NEW when I get to playing. I meant 100 dollars if I do not like DF, was counting the 50 i wasted on Aion.

Anyways I will post my impressions after I play a bit because everyday I see people same as me who really want to play Darkfall but are scared off by bad press and so teter on that line to dive in or not and I found that line painful to stand on, good or bad I feel better about at least doing something lol. So hopefully more impressions from nubs like me will help others decide to give it a shot or not.

I will check out that newbie guide as well.

    Thanks again everyone!

I bought the game on a whim one night, and don't have many regrets.

I highly reccomend NEW.  I am currently in it and it is a wonderful environment.

I played the first 2 days by myself, not knowing anyone and I nearly quit.  I hung in there, joined NEW, and am having an awesome time now.  They have been extremely helpful.

Don't think it is safe though.  You WILL be killed, and you WILL lose everything you have on you from time to time.  It is just part of the game!  Even being in the clan NEW, and being around the clan city, people still WILL kill you.  I was crafting some armor the other day and apparently a "PKer" had come into the city, saw me, killed me,  and took all my stuff.  It sucked, but I didn't let it get me too down, because it is after all, Just A Game.

Bank often, don't always wear your best stuff, walk to nearby places VS. taking a mount the short distance <or you could take a mount for an easier escape>.  Hunt with friends, harvest materials naked, and don't get incredibly angry when you are randomly PKed and all your stuff is taken.

Another great thing about Darkfall is you can do it casual if sapped for time and you'll still get every skill up when you can play. I'm sure some clan commitments might keep you out if you play casual all the time but there are others that have no problem with it.

This game is not letting me down since I started it's just getting better and better.
