Hi,
I am playing fantasy MMORPGs for more than 5 years, tried all classes in many games but still can't choose a class that can satisfy me for a long time. I find fun to start combat from distance with a bow, then put some protection spells and engage in melee, cast some AoE spells when enemies are around and heal myself fast before engaging next fight. Druid and shaman in WoW where close to it, but still far from perfect.
I don't understand how people can keep with their hunter, for example, doing nothing more than shooting arrows for two years. Or how you can play a mage never having a possibility to start a melee combat. Or how can you play a warrior or a rogue who can't use magic in a fantasy MMORPG?
That's why I wonder, do you have a favorite class and how you decided that it is your favorite?

My all time favorite class in game are Druids....Im not talking WoW druids either (Ive never played WoW)...I started my mmo experience in EQ1 and that is where I played my first Druid...played EQ for 7 years. I really like the diversity of them and what they stand for (nature). So if there is a game with Druid class, I'm all over it.. I have druids in EQ2 and Vanguard. If there is no druid in a game I will usually then play a healer type class.
I have always loved playing the utility class - able to do a little bit of this, a little bit of that. The problem with those types of classes is they are very much support classes and (usually) do not fare well on their own.
The first utility class I played was a Bard in EQ1, which was amazingly fun. I remember twisting certain songs for when I was soloing, and different ones for my group (in fact, different songs based on the party composition!). By playing a class that made any group more effective, it was always easy to find a group. The Bard in EQ2 was a farce, but Vanguard's bard was amazing (even if I didn't stay with the game for an extended period).
In many other games, they lack the utility class and have classes that can perform many roles. I enjoyed the Druid in WoW to some extent, but being able to only really perform one role even reasonably well at a time (due to eq/spec) felt limiting. Healers are fun because they make grouping easier without a dedicated guild, but they tend to feel shallow in solo play when trying to level. I've never been a fan of tanking; it just isn't my style.
When I do play fantasy games I usually go for the big hulking melee classes.
Usually tanks.
Warrior, Paladin, shadow knight, champions, defenders, knights
I love playing these classes due to the sick looking gear they wear and the role they play.
I'm a control freak so leading a party as a tank is just awesome.
I've been this way since UO all the way to the current fantasy games out now.
PLaying: EvE, Ryzom
Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum
Either Discipline Priests in WoW's arena or L2's necromancers.
The closest i can get to a Ranged Melee top DPS class. My first mmo i sat down and well just picked a random class. That first one was a mage. I tried both warlock of that game(ranged magic dps), and the Summoner(healer with well summons) and found both didn't do it for me. I did play both for quite some time though. But i grew bored of the game and stopped paying after awhile. So i decided to try the archer class. this was a game where you picked a starter class tehn specialized into one of two classes later. I was playing the archer and when time came to see what i had to do, they gave me two choices Marksman(imagine wow marksman spec hunter on steroids) or Hunter(pretty much just beast mastery for wow players). I came back after a couple months of pc problems, and then picked up on the marksman class. I went as much damage as humanly possible as fast as possible. They let you have the choice of doing "tricks", "ambushes" or "arrow mastery" basically the first is like a trap thing to give you a chance to run back. Second's long range stuff chance to stun sleep etc., the final one's all about the damage. I picked the third and started going wild as my main one. I also got some tricks so i could run away backstepping from mobs. That's basically what wow lets you do by running and jumping whilst also turning around really quick. That old thing. But oh well that's them this game let you do it the easy way, running backwards.
Ever since i chose that class i always stuck with it. I was always in danger of dying and was always ready to fight what came next. If a game's not got a ranged melee dps class. I won't play it. It's simply my favorite class. Since to be good in them most of the time you have to give up your safety net.
My favorite class is Paladins. Because I enjoyed reading the WoW Paladin lore on Wowwiki
My favourite class is the Mesmer, though the only game that seems to have that type of class is Guild Wars. It's not the typical damage dealer caster type of class, but rather, they deal indirect damage, such as sapping a character's life away, or getting rid of their energy so that they are unable to use spells and skills. Moreover, they have this skill that takes away the health of an enemy every time they attack, so in other words, the enemy practically kill themselves.
Besides the Mesmer, I also admit to having a very soft spot for Guild War's Assasins as well. Normally, I hate melee classes, but for some reason, the assasin class actually clicks with me. I guess I just like the idea of planning who to take down next, and finding the fastest way to reduce a specific target's health. The assasin is not a tank class, because they tend to be extremely squishy. Rather, they attack and disappear before the enemy even knows they are there, and this is the kind of playstyle I like.
Main characters:
Jinn Gone Quiet (Guild Wars)
Princess Pudding (Guild Wars)
Vanilla and BC WoW Enhancement Shamans were my favorite class in any MMORPG ever.
Post WOTLK when every class became the same class I lost interest in them though(and the game as a whole).
Guess I'd describe it as "support", apparently no games can put support in properly because people make support characters and cry when they're not as good at damage as a pure damage class. Oh well.
I like the dread knight and blood mage in Vanguard:SoH the dervish in guild wars is awesoem aswell
Very useful reading guys, keep it up, but don't forget to mention why is your class favorite to you.
Wish I could say: this class is favorite because it`s just my style.
The Bard, obviously. I love non-healer support classes and the ability to help your party with the song (and maybe using your Charisma with PnP games) and rapier just appeals to me.
I hate WoW because it made my plush hamster kill himself, created twin clones of Hitler, punched Superboy Prime in reality, stared my dog down, spoiled my grandmother, assimilated me into the Borg, then made me into a real boy, just to make me a woman again.
I always create two classes. Doesnt matter what game.
A Healer and a Pure Warrior. Depending on how I feel that day is how I choose to play.
If I had a rough day, I want to kill things. If it was a relaxing day, I will heal people.
I love hands-on utility classes: Thieves, techs, engineers. On the other hand I hate passive utility classes such as debuff and buff bots.
EDIT: Oh, as for the why: Well, back in the old D&D style computer RPG games, I always went for the class that could do the most out of combat. Be it picking locks and pockets, disarming and laying traps, persuading people... Any sort of gameworld hacking! This is the sort of thing that feels magical and plain fun to me in games. Even in combat, I always try to find creative and hopefully undocumented uses of spells and abilities. I don't care if it's of no solid use for the most part - that sort of in and of itself is exciting to me.
I love the critical role tanks and healers play, but the gameplay itself usually feels a bit monotonous to me.
Assassin/Ninja all the way!
I started with Dofus's Srams, but you find the equivalent in pretty much any game.
Traps and blows below the belts, abilities to disappear, cool tricks and cool looks, that does it for me.
This is a topic that hits home with me. My all time favorite class in any MMORPG was the MONK in Everquest 1. There is no other class that has ever compared to it for me, and likely will never be another due to the mechanics used in feign pulling.
Feign pulling gave me a reason to love my monk. It took skill, it took practice, and it took knowledge of the situation. I know now days most feign pulling isn't that hard in Everquest (which I resent btw), but do you remember watching your monks go out to pull Triplets in NToV or that one monk you knew could pull tormax solo, or pulling Tunare from her tree?
These were the best days of my MMO carreer and I firmly believe it was because of pulling and the monk class. Unfortunately, such class will never work in newer games unless they design the pathing / aggro system to allow it. But I doubt they will, after EQ1 Monks are lost puppies in the gaming world. We can play any class well, but never will have the class we really want to play again.
BWAHA!
EQ1 - Ranjah! Yeah baby yeah, shakadelic baby, oh behave! Good times! I track j00 and then I kill j00. most fun class in the game, nuff said.
Vanguard - Shaman, Druid, Bloodmage, Sorcerer. "oh cry cry.. but you are so OP" "Oh yeah? And what are you going to do about it?" LoL fracking good times.. I went full dick in that game and had a blast! No hard feelings okay?
Oh wait! Is this a PVE thread?

I have really taken a liking to the skirmisher type of character, that is a ranged character that is decent in melee and is highly mobile while shooting, like WoW's hunter, minus the pet, or the Shadow Warrior in Warhammer.
Unfortunately few games offer this as an option, most the time ranged characters have to keep firmly planted on the ground to DPS and nuke things to death and are usually geared towards being glass cannons, meaning you can't equip heavier armor or it gimps you badly.
But something like a Hunter minus the pet and with a bit more defense would probably be my ideal character type, regardless of genre.
The reason I like those characters so much even though they do not have the longest range or highest DPS or most AoE or the most defense, they are a good balance of all those things, plu sI like to move when I fight having to stay put to shoot people is annoying, as is being really squishy or having to stay in melee range to attack people.
Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit
I have to say I really enjoyed the EQ Necromancer. Not due to it being Dark Magic, poison and Diseased base ( though, granted, that was a huge plus), but because it had potential to do a little bit of everything.
I remember some hectic fights where I was constantly mana dumping the healer, back up healing (granted it was weak, but it added up), fearing adds, mezzing adds, and if the enemy was undead I'd have the pet off-tank while I slowed and debuffed its target. And it was great when I was doing all of these at the same time while trying to juggle my health decay to mana regen.
So I guess, my favored class is the Jack of All Trades.
I'm a huge fan of hybrids myself. In fact, I'm not really happy playing a pure class.
Both swords and sorcery is what draws me to the fantasy genre, and playing with only swords or only sorcery makes me feel like I'm missing something. I personally love Battlemage characters: Characters that cast protective spells and enchantments on themselves and their armor first, then they cast some ranged spells at their foes to provoke them to come within melee range, and then I slice them up with my sword. I like them to wear plate armor, due to the looks of it.
I've never had a favorite class. I prefer light/medium armor fighters, though I usually end up having to play a rogue which I hate. I like to beat face in but I like quickness as well with a draw back of dieing quicker than someone that has heavier armor. I've always wanted to play a pvp game with a class that focused on fighting with a staff or katana, with light armor. The Aion Chanter almost had it but it's not really what I'm talking about.
It's weird because I've played a lot of healers and rogue types yet I hate everything about healing and blame it on part of the reason I find MMOs boring. The rogue types are just me wishing I was an agile fighter instead of some lame, from-the-shadows assassin crap. I've played a few Mages in my time but only because it was usually the only viable way to stay competitive in solo pvp in some games.
So basically I've actually never gotten to play "my favorite class" because it's never really been done. Diablo 3 Monk seems like it will be the first time it's going to happen. Leave it to Blizzard to actually deliver what I've been wanting to play in a class. Though it wont be a pvp game =(
It took me about 6 or so years to find my stride within MMO gaming. Going around in different games (EQ, WoW, WAR as main three) played its part. Within even a same 'type' of class, between games, there can be a huge delta in game experience.
I finally settled on a warlock in WoW. And not the usual variety- destro during the non-heyday. The ability to be a (keyword here:) *decisive* element on the battlefield, coupled with 'juggling' pet abilities (kinda how people prefer driving stick over auto), and a nice variety of out of combat abilities like summons and the whole SS system (before being rendered obsolete).
I first started out as a healer, because I'm a grouper at heart and I knew I could bring something to the table as one. Also, being a healer gives you the broadest understanding of other class' abilities, I find, in class-based games. Despite being a very talented healer and enjoying the role, the one thing I disliked was how 'forced' I was into always being the same thing, because it was in *such* demand. I went melee because I felt that 1. melee armor/weaps in most any game look absolutely kick and 2. can swap between roles fairly easily both on whim and group preference. Until this point I was never a ranged or caster, as I couldn't stomach how slow and boring low-level play was. I finally rolled a lock with friends for laughs a couple years ago, and got past the early dry stage, and found almost in a revelation-type way, my niche.
I think playing a bit of everything helps as well. Being able to test the flavors on your dish allowed me to better understand what I was looking for as well.
Edit: Worth mentioning: I seemingly always choose to play a class in an atypical spec but in the typical way. For some reason I get a kick out of being specced for dps but tanking, specced for healing but dpsing... things of this nature. If I were a fencer, I'd probably fence with my lesser coordinated arm?
That is exactly right, and we're not saying NO to save WoW, because it is already a lost cause. We are saying NO to dissuade the next group of greedy suits who decide to emulate Blizzard and Cryptic, etc.
We can prevent some of the future games from spewing this crap, but the sooner we start saying no, the better the results will be.
So - Stand up, pull up your pants, and walk away.

Favorite class = Necromancer (EQ1)
I decided to try the class the day the Warriors in EQ1 had the strike and I never stopped playing it. My Warrior is still 65 to this day and my Necromancer is max level with tons of AAs.
If you do not know of the strike I speak of, well then you did not play EQ1 during its hayday.
Sooner or Later
Favorite of all time Taming/Bard/Mage in UO that was the best char I have ever had and to this day have not been able to match the amount of fun I had with that toon.
My favorite class in EQ1 was the ranger. Because he could wield all sorts of weapons and wear cool armor AND had a wide variety of spells AND could shoot a bow. I loved that I could also be used as an off tank OR and off healer, truly a versatile class which fit my play style because I liked doing all things in EQ.
My favorite class in DAoC was definetly the Paladin. I ended up with two 50 pallies (i never got to level 50 with any of the other classes they were to boring). Pallies were fun because the armor looked awesome and i liked that I could be a tank but still mess around with other skills like chants and styles so it wasn't too simple like the Warrior or armsmen was.
My fav class in WoW had to be a warlock. I'm not sure why, maybe it was the instant dots or the cool lookin pets. They are easy to level...which i liked, and they used to be decent in pvp, I don't know about anymore though...i quit 6 months ago due to a bad community.
Favorite class in Guild wars.... probably the necromancer for the adventure mode and the warrior/monk for pvp. I loved having TONS of pets(which reminds me I also liked the theurgist in daoc even though he wasn't my favorite.)
When it comes down to figuring out which class to be in an MMO, you can't always chose the right one from the beginning. You have to try a few and see what you like doing. For instance I loved spells in WoW and hated melee, but it was the exact opposite in DAoC. And in EQ I loved shooting arrows, so I tried a scout in DAoC but I hated it).
Sounds like you would like the Friar in Daoc. He uses medium leather armor and wields a staff, hes very quick attacking and at dodging and if he is starting to die he can heal himself. Too bad Daoc is dead though
