Best Classic, Current and Upcoming MMORPG v2.0.

Seeing as the last one was unanimously voted a POS...

As much as I hate the "Which game is best" threads, I feel justice needs to be done...

Please try not to post anything untill all 3 polls are up. Anybody who posts will here on in be known as an illiterate SOB...

Let's start with classic...

Each poll can only have 9 options.

Anyways, I personally went Lineage/WoW/Auto Assault...

Lineage because... it's simply an awesome game, not to mention in terms of numbers, it IS the "best classic" mmorpg...

WoW because... numbers again ^^ can't argue with them numbers... ntm it is a really solid game... probably be playing it right now if it wasnt so easy...

    and actually I would normally choose Guild Wars over anything else, but just rescently I've been really reading up alot on Auto Assaut and it just seems awesome o_0;;

Honestly, I'm surprised how many people are excited about DnL. What are you all looking for the most in the game?I voted for Guild Wars, myself, but mainly based on the fact that there will be no monthly fees...I'd love any MMORPG, yes its a MMORPG in my opinion, with no fees. Everquest will hold up the classic game for awhile too.

I'm looking forward to the large land area. If I wan't to group with friends, fine, I can. If I want to crawl into some deserted corner, and live like a hermit, I can. If I want to explore, I can do that. In terms of player/land ratio, it means unless you want to run into someone, you usally won't. I don't know about you, but that would really help game immursion for me. More so, then going to the most dangerous spot in the world, then realizing its crammed with people. It would let me feel like I am a adventeur and not just another face in the crowd.

Well, the main thing is it will be centered around PvP, with Dark vs. Light. I haven't seen a good PvP game lately, so that alone is enough to get me interested. Then the graphics are great, especially with the view distance(granted, it would take one hell of a computer to not lag with the view distance at max). And a whole lot of little things, like skydiving, snow-shielding, hang-gliding, fighting on dragons, Fairies as a playable class(lol), etc. And the weather looks completely amazing. You'll leave tracks in the snow, and depending on how deep it is it may slow your walking speed down. Oh, and did I mention the HUGE world? And everyone playing on one server cluster capable of holding tens of thousands of people. And holding or capturing a fortress... the social XP system along with the fighting XP.........

    Voted:

AO: Because it was different, and anything different in a world of clones is good. And it was a good different.

Current: WoW because I actually smiled all the time as I was playing. Only thing ever had me smiling like that before has been the DaoC PvP. Here I smiled even when hunting mobs.

Future: Auto Assault. Because it is different, and anything different is good in a world of clones. Oh, and because I have already tried DnL.

i knew it, the poll is so unbalanced............WoW and DnL..........but well what could we do?

    BTW

Classic: Anarchy Online (Second: Ultima Online)
Current: WoW (Second: Final Fantasy XI)
Upcoming: Really difficult, couldnt decide between DnL or Vanguard, I chose DnL)

Lol, but what the hell's the point asking "what's the best" and then leaving the best out? It just doesnt make any sense...

at least this way you can actually get an accurate view at what people are thinking, rather then your wierd little version of it...

Still no Fallen Earth in new list ? Why Mourning and some other no-name eq clones made the list and FE didnt is beyond me.
  • RammurRammur Member Posts: 575
Dont forget to add realms into it www.realmserver.com been around longer than all them.
  • BigPeelerBigPeeler Member Posts: 1,270

I was thinking of adding Realm, but I doubt it would get the votes to make a difference anyways...

As for Fallen Earth, if I had 10 spaces it would have been the next one on...

I voted for Shadowbane because the poll said vote for the best, but although SB is the best, it's the best crap game of crap games.  The other two categories aren't worth it because the classic games all suck and Darkfall isn't on the upcoming games list, and it's the best developed concept for an MMORPG I have ever seen.... ever.

No MMOPRG get's a rating higher than crap from me unless it has all of the following:
    1) ONE world.  None of this shard crap.  I've tried to understand the technical and social 'reason' for it and it comes down to "We're trying to please everyone" and then they end up not pleasing anyone
    2) The ability for players to build on the world, creating buildings, cities and nations.  Otherwise it's just another D&D clone.  It's called a ROLE-PLAYING-GAME.  Cater to the role-players or it's just a MMOG, not MMORPG.
    3) None of this level and class crap.  It's a holdover from the old paper and pencil rpgs and only makes sense because human beings usually can't crunch the numbers required for a skill-based system to work well.  We have computers now folks, get over it.  If you have a class/level based system, you have the level grind.  There's no way around it and it is universally disliked.  Get with it
    4) Unlimited PvP.  With the exception of one or two safe areas where new players can go and practice how to use the interface, if you're playing, you're fair game.  At the same time, the skill system should not reward people for killing other players.  It should reward people for taking on challenges.  No one should get much (if anything) from killing a character so new, they don't know which end of the sword is dangerous.
    5) Serious consequences for dying.  No perma-death.  That's another way to try to please everyone and in a computer game where the players knowledge carries over into their character, perma-death is only good for one thing, frustrating players who have worked hard to get where they are and then die because of bad luck.  On the other hand, players should spend more than a few fractions of a second contemplating getting themselves into situations where their character might die and if they die too often, they should be set back quite a bit.
    6) And MOST important; it should be possible for new characters to take out the MOST experienced character without needing to have some kind of uber item or five to one odds in numbers.  Involve the players in their characters actions.  No "click target, click attack button, wait for victory"  You're not PLAYING your role, you're operating automated machinery.

If a game has all of these (and no game I know of does) then it get's off my "Crap game list"  but in order to be considered decent, it has to do all of these things WELL, and since the best thing every new game has to offer is better sound and graphics.  Since every game has better graphics and sound than those that came before it, if a game lists anything to do with graphics and sound as it's list of 'cool features' it's nothing to get excited about.

Darkfall is the only game that even comes close and it looks like it might not even get finished.
Yeah, that's right.  Call me a whiner.  I call you sheep.

Come on let's hear about what's NEW, not just what's next.

You and I think a lot alike...

Glad to see I'm not alone.  I have one issue with your 'ideal game'

NPCs.. I know it would be cool if we didn't need them, but we do.  Even if there's only they guy behind the counter.  I want an option to play a storekeeper, miner, weaponsmith, naval architect, but I don't want the game to collapse if players don't play them.  I can't count the times I've seen something to the effect of "Intelligent NPCs who interact with you" and find out the NPCs can't even be contextually accurate and use information you tell them in some kind of logica fashion.  Monsters that get hung up by tree's, that mindlessly do the same things over and over again as if their addition to the game was an afterthought, and a badly implimented one at that.

I don't want to single out SB, because it's not the only one that does it, but it has morning and night, monster camps, NPCs you can hire to sell and buy stuff in your own city, NPCs to defend your cities.

But the NPCs can't leave the city.  They don't wander at all, except guards that you tell to patrol the area.  Ultima V had NPCs that went home during the night and you had to wait until morning when their shops opened.  That's what.... a 20 year-old idea? In SB only the guards move at all.  What's the point of day and night if there's no difference except in how hard it is to see the stuff on you monitor.
You can't get rid of the monster camps in SB.  They don't grow in numbers if you leave them alone, they wander about aimlessly and you can get within spitting distance and they won't do anything until you attack or if you get real close.  You have no chance to talk to them or treat with them.  They are either 100% enemy or 100% friend.

One other thing about games like SB where you can build nations and attack other nations.  Borrow from the RTS games.  If you have NPCs, have real NPCs.  If you barracks produces NPCs, then you should be able to order them around like you do units in an rts game, and they should be smart enough not to get hung up like most rts games.  I'd love to play a game that was a cross between Shadowbane and.. let's say Total War... Having actual players involved in the war should be a plus, not a necessity.  So what if all your guildmates can't be on all the time.  That's why military bases have an 'officer of the day'  Make up a schedule so that either you can have at least one player on duty at all times or your NPCs will give you real-time email alerts about stuff they've been instructed to keep an eye on so that you can jump online when needed, but you can actually play the game AND have a life..  There's a concept.  If you're going to make me work to get six million gold to begin building a city, give me the tools to not only protect it when I'm online, but protect it when I'm offline too.  I'm already a game nerd wacked out on mountain dew and doritos who's on way more than I should be.  I've already jumped through your hoops to get this far.  At least meet me half-way.  Bane circles and challenges and war-time/peace-time are work-arounds for the wrong problem.

And don't whine about this being hard to code.  Instead of wasting dollars and time making the graphics 10% better so that they can use the latest $200 graphics card even though the old ones are just fine, put that effort into making TOOLs to help the players do what the box tells them they can do.

okay okay.. Someone else can use the soap-box now.

Can't vote, there is too much missing.  Some of the classic mmos should also be in the current poll because they are still current, have huge subscriber bases and still have dev teams working on them putting out new content every few months.

    Nahallac Silverwinds
    Alter Destiny

... How many times do I have to repeat myself?! >_<

There is a 9 answer limit per poll... How would I put some of the Classics into the Current poll? Of course the classics are still going to be around... if they werent they would practically be considered failures, and therefore have no need to be on a poll...
