Do you really want to play more race to level cap, solo questing games?

Do you want social interaction?
Do you want crafting that is a challenge not just a means to and end?
FFXI isn't going anywhere. FFXIV is going to be a different game, more than likely alot like the current flavor of MMOs. FFXI needs people like you. The MMO player who is lost without a game, or just can't bear to kill 10 more kobolds should be playing FFXI. Forget about what will happen when FFXIV comes out and worry about what your doing now. There's a long gap until it comes out, and even if it does.. How many of you already play more than one mmo.. especially when they are vastly different games.
If you've never played FFXI and you enjoy rich storylines with a deep "rpg" feel.. FFXI has been there all along waiting for you.

Instead of a game where everyone is at level cap, and everything below the level cap is OBSOLETE. Play a game where most everything is still viable today. Great group fun! I'm on Asura, and I urge you to join me. We can create a static group/linkshell and complete all the content from level 1 on!
I know this is a FFXI related post, but this goes out to anyone who has no idea what to play, but knows they do not want to play another "wowclone" this is for you!

If the controls weren't that awkward i personally would've stayed plus the game's pretty dated by now, no offense.
Its aged fairly well in my opinion. The graphics still look better than WoW's personally. The key to playing the game is getting yourself a controller. It was never designed to be played strictly with a keyboard and mouse. Actually I never touch my mouse while I play, and I only touch the keyboard to chat. Feels nice to be able to sit back in my chair, instead of hunched over the keyboard.

I would be playing FFXI now if it wasn't for Square Enix's horrible customer service. I played for a very long time, had multiple level 75s, but got hit in the ban sweep because of my debit card.
What happened was, Square accidentally double charged my bank card, my bank realized this automatically and reversed the second charge that shouldn't have been there. Square then saw this as a charge back, and even after I talked to my bank and a Square enix CSR they decided I should remain banned.
I asked them why I they wouldn't reverse the ban even though it was their fault, they simply said "In the TOS it says we can ban you without questions asked". Soo all of this "true" progression and all of the things I worked for in FFXI was gone, because Square said so.
I know what you are thinking ," You can't possibly get banned without doing something wrong." Well that's not true with Square Enix. It happened to a ton of people all at the same time, in two different waves. It wasn't just me, and I did not do anything wrong. Square made the mistake in their billing department, and I paid for it.
I agree the graphics are dated, but "THE GAME" is more advanced than any other game out there. The graphics are very low poly but at least they do put in some detail here and there, you look at wow and it is the lowest form of graphics on the planet and it has a lot of subs,so i guess players don't really care.
One thing i noticed however,i really don't play the game anymore, but i did login and found every single person and all the LS i were in are gone .I am not sure if the leaders of the LS left and everyone followed or what exactly happened but that is a lot of players leaving the game.I did a search on two servers i have accounts and at night time i found only 1080 on /sea ,that is not very good.Over my long stay in FFXI ,i got a very good feel for /sea ,i used it a lot and i feel 2500 is the right amount of players to really make the game feel alive,i would be happy with 3000,5000 is the server design and i would also be happy with that.
I actually found over a year ago the game needed to merge a few servers as there is not nearly enough players constantly on.Since FFXI separates high levels from low level areas badly, they could easily merge 3 servers into 1,it will not be over populated.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Yes i agree their customer service is maybe one of the worst around.
I see the problem is their Japanese division. The reason is not a guess it is from facts,i have had several problems with them and it took at my cost several phone calls before i got to talk to a common sense English speaking support. When i spoke to the non English,it was frustrating as hell ,hard to understand them and they would give me a hard time. When i spoke to a clear English speaking support person, problems were solved quickly,it was like night and day.
ALL they should need is a security question or 2 and your email, nothing more, yet if you have problems they want all the codes or you are hung out to dry, that is a communism run regime if i ever heard of one, brutal customer service.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Hope your recruiting post works. I notice though that there have been several people who have tried to get into the game or are coming back that are have posted and are usually ignored. In fact I haven't seen a response to someone asking for a group for over 2 months(9/28/09). It's nice to go out seeking converts but some people need help getting started after that. I had seen posts where people were sick and tired of the elitism and politics that was plauging FFXI and said how they "would never be a part of that" and would help buffer new players from those negative effects. However, when people called them out on this, there was never a response. I know personally I voluteered to join a LS, Guild, Gold World Pass program, and anything else that might have helped.
This isn't necessarily directed at the OP since at the end the OP did provide a server and contact, but you do have a group of players that are enthusiastic and want to try the game out or come back after a long period of time that are seemingly being ignored(they may be getting PM'ed, can't know for 100% sure). I hope the campaign by FFXI players to get people into FFXI from MMORPG does not continue to leave them out.
Other than that, you can't beat picking up Ultimate Collection for 20 dollars when you get like 7 expansions and 1 free month. For people who like the trial, it's a minimal investment and saves a ton of time in downloading.
I really wanted to, but when they refused to take my debit card because my bank wasn't a member of a 3-D security service, well, what choice did I have?
Same problem here, I pay with throw-away mastercard prepaid cards, and now due to this change I can no longer play the game at all.
Getting a normal credit card is not an option for me due to personal issues, so I am essentially left out in the cold now while my characters rot away unplayed.
I guess my post was somewhat of an invitation from me to anyone who wants to get started in the game who needs a bit of a "push". I know the game very well, having played it for a very long time. I would like nothing more than to see more people enjoying one of the few games left that still bears some semblance to what MMO's used to be like. The problem is level 10 is the magic level where everyone quits because getting there is fairly frustrating if you don't have any direction. I remember my first day, I died soooo many times...
It took a nice person who was randomly out helping new people to show me how to "attack" and not die! I still died alot, but its supposed to be hard...
Its not like WoW and other games, where you can sail for 40 levels before you ever die once.
I started a new toon on EQ2 (which I am about to unsub to here in a sec) and I am level 21, and have not died once. On my brand new FFXI toon who is level 8... I've died about 6 times so far.. Mainly due to my stupidity, but partly due to the creative aggro system that FFXI has and the fact that mobs roam nearly everywhere.. so nowhere is safe except for cities if you decide to go afk.

Lol, frankly I don't care how simple a game is, or how difficult the leveling system is.
Ultima Online had one of the simplest gameplay mechanics, simplest leveling systems and was so much more complex than FFXI.
In fact, people who play FFXI should play WOW. I don't even play WOW, but why would you grind 50 hours for a shitty endgame, one of the most linear MMORPGs I've ever played (seriously, the fact that games like Fallout 3 allow better class, character and skill customization in comparison to a mainstream MMO is just sad).
Woohoo, I really wanna grind for hours on end when I can't really do ANYTHING IN THAT GAME ANYWAYS. WOOHOO
Agreed, the controls are some of the worst I have ever experienced. Also I'm not a fan of the asian style.
Darkfall Travelogues!
The controls were fine if you played with a controller. Keyboard controls were just terrible, though.
I've been looking into FFXI free trial. My one concern right now is figuring out which damn server to play on. I want one well populated, fairly mature player base, lots of activity as far as grouping + guilds go and of course location, so I get a good connection.
No, I shouldn't, because while I appreciate the game for what it is, the next one is around the corner, and starting from scratch only to switch would be a bit pointless, and the PC client is absolutely god awful which is the only one I would consider using. It's a good game, but I couldn't really recommend it to anyone who isn't already playing let alone someone who's not planning on going the 360/ps2 route.
Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.
EAT ME MMORPG.com!
FFXI is my favorite MMO but I have to say.. I don't think anyone (who isn't already playing) should play it. Instead read up on and get excited about FFXIV... because that looks to surpass the great FFXI in almost every way
Your post is full of facts and lacks utter bias.
Now that the sarcasm is out of the way, FFXI is one of the only older generation MMO's showing a rather high player retention (and as of late player return) for a reason. SE is an adaptable company and they know how to update a game to match the market without completely destroying their current setup and playstyle. The game has become far more casual and solo-friendly as well as group-friendly over the years, while still maintaining a very hardcore and dedicated end game. I personally could care less about the end game, i'm enjoying the ride that is progression and grouping.
It really strikes me that you haven't played this game in years, if at all. Stop attempting to scare away potential players with your garbage and instead be constructive with your criticism. The game is not perfect, but it's a dying breed of gameplay style that focuses on group-oriented goals throughout the game.
Square Enix has already stated XIV is going to be a DIFFERENT game than XI, and it's focused on smaller groups and highly casual gameplay. They will be offering two similar but different game styles, and personally, I'm excited for XIV to release but I have my fears of the above. I'm playing FFXI because I'm tired of quest grinders and one of the devs mentioned a similar quest based system for FFXIV.
If this is the case, I see myself returning to FFXI indefinitely unless they offer a combined subscription plan (which I doubt).
Shitty endgame? FFXI has one of the best endgames of any MMO. Take WoW. All endgame consists of is PVP and the same style of raids, where you go through an area, defeat a boss, and your done. FFXI has that. Plus 100 floor dungeons with a boss every 10 floors, so only the more "hardcore" gets to the top. Dungeons where everyone starts with limits on them like no abilities, spells, no sub class, no weapons, no armor, etc, and as you progress you get very few items to unlock certain things, making it strategic, not counting named mobs that have went undefeated for 4 years and counting. Sounds shitty, right?

Grind exists no matter what MMO you play. Its all in what flavor of "grind" you want to endure it.
WoW and every other recent MMO takes the solo questing route. Whether your want to admit/like it or not.. your "grinding" in those games just as much as I'm grinding in FFXI. The only difference is, your reading some ho hum pointless quest text, and having to run back and forth the entire time. Sounds fun when you really break it down to what it is at its core, doesn't it? FFXI is the only game left where you get in a group and kill mobs. Not just instances, where the mob layout is exactly the same every single time you run it, but "zones" where the mobs roam randomly. The endgame in FFXI destroys anything WoW has to offer. Like has already been said. I find your comments on the FFXI endgame laughable at best. Most people never even get to end game to even comment on how good it is. Funny thing is, I wouldn't even comment on the endgame of FFXI because FFXI has always been about the "journey". Everyone is so wrapped in what you do when you get to the cap as fast as you can. What about all the fun you could have had along the way? FFXI has that, other games.. don't. Your not on a journey in other games.. your just doing quests until you hit level cap, and then you either raid or pvp.. thats it.
FFXI is one of, if not the only fantasy MMO left that doesn't hand hold you through the whole thing.

I have read up on FFXIV extensively, and from every source I read. I'm seeing a completely different game than FFXI.. one that is more akin to WoW and the current style of MMO than its big brother. Look at EQ and EQ2.. everyone thought that EQ2 was going to be the second coming of EQ.. and sorry to say, it was a huge dissappointment for those thinking it would be anything like EQ.. two completely different games. Most EQ players hate EQ2.. I'm not wishing that on FFXIV, but if they do what I've read they plan to do.. thats exactly what they'll have.

Most people don't seem to realize this fact, though. When they tack on a new number to a game release (EQ2, AC2, etc) the new one is going to more than likely be different. If it was exactly the same, they would only be attracting their current playerbase from the first one, if any. I was highly anticipating Asheron's Call 2 since the original was and still is my favorite MMO. Boy was I disappointed.
Take all the single player Final Fantasy games; how many of them are similar to the point they're identical? This is going to be the case for FFXIV, I'm just unsure if this new style will be for me or not. Time will tell.
well, i found the controls to be pretty easy, once you switch it up to compact mode (WASD etc) The game is easily my favorite MMO, and I would be glad to join that LS
I'm gonna work on getting that Linkshell up and going. I was just trying to see how many were interested before I toss out the gil for the shell.
I agree the compact keyboard makes it easier, but I feel right at home on my controller..

I played FFXI for 2.5 years and had four jobs at 75. I absolutely love this game. The main reason I left was the "elitism" that bigdaddysfe mentioned. For too many FFXI players the game appears to be their life and they expect everyone they play with to have the same level of commitment. I saw people get kicked from groups for not having a specific piece of equipment (which took days of NM camping or weeks of farming to get) or ridiculed for not understanding certain party techniques (ex SATA at the levels where the technique is first learned). Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of really great people that play the game. They are what kept me playing for 2.5 years. I guess my ability to deal with the numerous @##hats degraded the longer I played.
I went back awhile ago and I just couldn't do it. Being a huge Final Fantasy fan is what got me into the game but to be honest its nothing like final fantasy. The player base and dev team is nothing but a joke. Instead of me feeling stronger as i leveled i actually felt weaker and weaker. One day i'm fighting the "Shadow Lord" said to be this amazingly powerful foe. Then the next day i'm fighting "Imps" which are a much much harder fight than the Shadow Lord and yet i'm pretty sure story line wise they were just supposed to be his scouts.
Not only that but there arent a great deal of things as a melee to do in the game already but when you fight Imps they can silence you and/or take away all of your abilities which is all there is to do in the game for a whole minute. So all i'm doing is auto attacking for a solid minute...what kinda dev makes an enemy in the game that takes all of the joy out of it?! As soon as he debuffs me I just go take a dump and make myself a sandwich and come back and my character hasnt missed a beat. Even before that you fight birds that you cant use offensive spells on for like 8 levels. I mean what a joke! So no black mages in those parties...and in a game where soloing is either not possible or just takes godly amounts of patience and time why would the dev team even see this as a good idea?!
As someone who likes to RP and respect lore i just couldnt lie to myself any longer. I had to cancel my sub. I understand making the game challenging but no other MMO just puts enemies in a game that completely 100% shut down another job leveling at the same pace others do. Not only that but the player base only cares about leveling and getting to end game, they dont give a crap about the journey. As a THF I get skills like Mug, Steal, and Gil Finder. Which are totally useless unless you fight humanoid mobs but guess what...nobody that plays that game wants to group up to fight humanoids because they are tougher...ok thats fine but why hasnt this been addressed by the dev team? Why not let humanoid mobs give a larger bonus than killing bats in Garlaige Citadel at level 35...really? Bats no bigger than my hand are giving my entire group of 6 people a fight at level 35. That just makes me feel like a peon. If you enjoy the game thats fine...but thats my 2 cents on why i'm not playing anymore lol.
