Looking for a new game.

eldanesh117eldanesh117 Member Posts: 141

Been contemplating putting one of these up for a while... but I'm running out of options. So here I turn to.

Alright, here's the thing. No P2P games. I'm currently on a budget right now (and I've had to bid farewell to my 48 Cleric on Aion after the dough ran dry), so I'm looking for a new F2P game right now to hold me over.

Graphics:

Nothing cutesy-artsy like Fiesta or Flyff. In all honesty, they make me puke. The highest I'm willing to tolerate anime-style is with things like Ragnarok Online or Dragonica (which actually does feel like anime, not like some sicko 3D/2D anime demon-spawn brainchild). Other than that, I could care less what else it looks like. It could be an abstract painting for all I care. Oh, and having lowbie armor that looks really cool (why is Cabal the only game that I know of that has CAPES?! Really, capes look cool. Oh, how I wish I'd tried Champions/CoX).

Gameplay:

Not the most important, but still a high point. For one, the combat has to be fluid. It shouldn't feel like: walk to mob, stop, slash, skill, get hit by mob, pot, repeat. I utterly abhor those sorts of games (Last Chaos would probably be a good example of that). Partying should be optional, but should fare better than soloing in terms of experience. Crafting/housing/etc., is also optional. Might I mention that I've already tried Runes of Magic, and I dislike the dual-classing system. I hate having to juggle two classes, when I just want to be a pure healer class, but since I didn't dual class, I'm usually the last resort for parties when there are SO much other, more better healers around. /sarcasm

PvP isn't something that I'm really into, but something that I prefer to dabble in. GvG would be liked, but is not needed, likewise with having flashy skills/abilities. Dual-wielding class that isn't a rogue is also preferred (see: Dragon Age Origins - Juggernaut Plate Champion with dual blades).

Note: I prefer to play healer/support classes.

Community:

This right here is the clincher. I hate it when I'm playing a game and I feel like I'm surrounded by robots (and bots). I'm looking for a warm and friendly community who's willing to help a new player. I'm not as dense as a brick, and I usually pick up on a game's mechanics within an hour or so, but I'd like to get to know people and be able to get a guild and start partying from the get-go. Not really a serious sort of person, I'm laid-back when it comes to chatting things up.

Genre:

Fantasy, sci-fi, steampunk, I don't really care, so long as it fits within my graphics standards.

F2P Games that I've tried:

All Acclaim/Aeria/Nexon/IGG/ijji/Outspark/OGPlanet games. Which pretty much rules out... a lot.

It seems you're on the supreme search for the ultimate community as we all are.  I'd check this other thread out if that's the case.  It's the wonderful idea of a fellow mmorpg.com frequenter and is well on its way to hopefully addressing some of the community problem.

Edit: OOPS!  Big mistake.  I totally missed the whole "NO P2P " thing.  This may NOT be up your alley then!  Sorry!

Well, thanks for the offer anyways, Alamor. I might be able to check that all out (they all seem to be like-minded good people I'd like to play an MMO with) once I can get my whole budget problem sorted through, which might not be for a long while (see: college).

Ok, here is my recommended list for you:

    1. Guildwars. You will have to pay for the box but you can find it for like $10 for Prophesies or you can buy it with all expansions for something like 40 bucks, maybe less. It is the best game you can find for this kind of money, no cash shop, great story, good graphics (but it is 4 years old) and loads of content. You should really get it. Still the best arena PvP play and the 3rd largest MMO on X-fire, have sold more than 6 million copies and programmed by the dude who made Diablo and Warcraft 3.

    2. DDO. Classic dungeons and dragons game, F2P. Lotsa traps and quite interesting dungoens but not for anyone that likes soloplay.

    3. AO. Rather old but if you play it without expansions it is free to play. Still better than any regular F2P game.

    4. Runes of magic. The best F2P game out there, rather similar to Wow but not nearly in the class of the 3 games in top of it.

These are the only 4 games I can recommend without monthly fees. GW is the only one you'll have to pay a small sum initially but on the other hand isn't anyone running around with gear they bought for real money there.

Guild Wars is something I'm definitely willing to try out. Will definitely look into it over winter.

As for AO... = Anarchy Online? If so, I vaguely recall playing. It was quite mind-numbing to me. Just running around to places where I had no idea where I was, shooting random things, accomplishing quests which I didn't fully understand... I liked the idea, but it's just too massive for me (I'm quite a dunce), to fully understand how everything worked.

DDO for me was just... eerie. Where's the music?

RoM, I've already stated my dislikes to. Though with a few content patches in, I might be willing to try it out again (though I have heard it is cash shop heavy--never really did like competing with the rich folk).

But thanks for the recommendations, Loke.

I suggest Wizard 101. I just started playing and really enjoy it.

Yeah, ROM is very cash shops heavy, so is almost every single F2P MMO. That is why GW is my the best choice, I played it for 1 1/2 year before I got burnt out on it.

AO have it's issues and is really od (yeah you are right) but it is still better than any F2P game. So is DDO.

Some people prefer DDO to GW, the big difference is that GW is made by Jeff Strain and you can feel some things from his earlier games (Diablo WC3 and Wow, mostly Diablo but with a good story instead of mindless killing). There is no real grind in GW either and if you want to PvP can you start with a max lvl character and good armor from start, you just can't PvE with that char. Prophesies and Nightfall have the best stories. Pro and EyotN is set in a classical western setting, Factions is in the orient (with some battlegrounds and guild control cities) and Nightfall is african based.

But the reason I mentioned ROM anyways was that it is still many steps up from any other F2P game, the only others worth trying is PW, Last chaos and possibly Atlantica, but they are all a lot worse than ROM and as cash shop based.

Upcoming GW2 is worth a look, finally a full budget persistent world MMO without monthly fees, there you have a game that will be really huge.

Try Allods online, new Free to play game coming out thats in closed beta right now but you wont have any trouble getting in.  been playing the last couple days and im pretty impressed.  The graphics are good, look like a mix between WoW and Final Fantasy graphics.  Community seems good so far.  Unique classes and races. Did I mention its free?

A lot of people said it was a WoW clone... not really sure if that's good or bad. Will keep that in mind, though.

WoW clone is a term given to any MMO that came after WoW (or at least people think came after WoW) that employs the classic class/level system of progression,  has your basic tank/healer/dps core of archtypes, has 3d graphics, and doesn't use twitch combat.

So in that sense, yeah you could call it that.  The Lore, Races, Classes, skills, ect are all unique to the game and done pretty well.  Its nothing groundbreaking or innovative, but so far its pretty fun

The only game that near enough fits all those requirements has got to be Guild Wars. Aside from the dual class thing which you said you don't like lol... however its much better in GW. (Cos you don't have to level up your 2nd class). I've spent well over 1000 hours on it over 4 years and I still regularly go back to it, theres plenty to do but like all games, you'll end up bored ( after a long while though i reckon :)). Unlike P2P though you can come back to it without having to worry about subs. I'd deffo recommend this to anyone.

Waiting for Guild Wars 2, SW:ToR and STO.
    Currently playing Guild Wars, LoTRO).
Played WoW, GW, CO, DDO, RoM, WAR, LoTRO, Allods (Beta) + Tons more that aren't even worth mentioning!

    I'd review the following 2:

    1. Atlantica Online

    2. Runes of Magic

Just wondering, folks, does the entire GW series come in a bundle? I want to buy the whole thing so I can have the whole experience, although I'm hoping it doesn't cost too much.

The trilogy is 50 dollars and includes Prophecies, Nightfall, and Factions. It really is a good deal.

Keep in mind there is a trial so you should really try that first.

If you buy the trilogy pack from the Guild Wars website, you also get the Eye of the North expansion for free right now.  So basically, 50 bucks, and never pay again.  Beats the hell out of the 100 or so I dropped on it :)

I still only have the original version of Guild Wars =)  I played it for a while when it came out and never really got *that* into it myself.  Not that it's a bad game - it's great and it really clicks with a lot of people.

The only reason I bring it up at all is because I think it's so cool that even now, after so many years, I can log in any time I please and play for free if I feel like it.

    I dunno..  I just think it's cool.

I'm the type of person that keeps a large amount of MMO games installed.  I patch them all periodically for when/if I go back to them for a while.  It's nice not to have to sit through the patching for a game when I'm actually wanting to log in and play it.  By doing it this way I can patch while having dinner or any number of other reasons I'm away from the computer.

    Anyway.. waaay off-topic.

    Shut up.. I'm tired.
