I saw an interview that said this MMO will be more "modern." What does that mean? More machina? I've loved FF games but noticed theyve drifted further away from fantasy(IE summoning a Shiva motercycle instead of an actual Aion)...I'm not sure if this is what they mean by modern in this MMO. If so, I'm not sure if I'll like this one. I play video games to get away from reality not to submerse back into it. I will of course give it a shot as I am a big final fantasy fan. I just hope theyll be tons of magic and fantasy involved!

In my opinion, Final Fantasy has always been to me a feel of futuristic magic. It's just always given me that feeling since the first games.
Final Fantasy 6/3US was the best in my opinion, followed by 7 which we can all agree was a huge success, and BOTH were high in technology as well as magic, so to see FFonline games travel in this direction is very welcome to me.
Personally I prefer FFIV over FFVI. VII through IX (not sure about later ones) had a bad habit of having somewhat incoherent endings which sucked.

Well some people like to think about their endings, others prefer them gift wrapped. To each his own. Kind of a pointless post when considering the thread though.
From videos it still looks primarily fantasyish, so im not sure if by modern they were refering to the setting, or perhaps gameplay wise? (meaning easier to use interface/menu's, etc.)
It certainly doesn't look sci-fi-ish/modern
Square describes FFXIV as a fantasy/sci-fi game. FFXIV will have more Sci-fi elements then FFXI, but fantasy will still be the dominating element.
What they mean by this is that some cities will be more mechanical in nature, while some will be more natural. There will be airships ( though not controllable, at least not at launch) and there have been hints at usable Guns/Gunblades.
Just by reading interviews and viewing some pics, you can see where the game will have a more sci-fi element.

VII: ending is only incoherent if you didn't take time to find out the whole story and/or didn't pay attention to some of the smaller details that are important for plot. Like who Zach is or the fact you only fight Sephiroth at the very end of the game. Any other time you do it is the shapeshifting JENOVA ... small things ...
VIII: ... Rinoa = Ultimatica
IX: Necron is the creature that lives inside the crystal which is shattered when Kuja casts Ultima. Not very well explained, but it is all there in the story (probably a lot lost in translation). They needed one more cut scene to really do it justice.

Well, with VII I meant more that last fight at the end with just Cloud and Seph that lasts for one hit and is sort of there for no reason. Heh, I don't remember VIII very well, but I remember it felt kinda the same. As for Necron, apparently that isn't explained well AT ALL even in the original Japanese. Those games, at least, just kinda had a bad habit of tossing something in at the end that made little sense and that's all I was getting at.

Yes, Drachasor sometimes makes off-topic posts, usually they are pretty good though. Now for the low price of only five installments of $19.99 you can enjoy Drachasor's greatest off-topic hits, including "hoverboards don't work over water"! ACT NOW!
FF has been more "modern/sci-fi" since the 6th one (3rd in US), from what I remember. I really think the euphemism used is that they are aiming at "modern MMO philosophy/tech" that caters to people with time-constraints and learning disabilities. That worries me a bit as a player that appreciates some hardcore aspects and heavy learning curves, but the old-school choices of the last game (poor wording since the game IS 6 yrs old now) made it hard to stomach for players without the patience to wait on groups. I personally feel that the way they are taking the guild structure of the new game, as well as the player-made quests that guilds can hand out, will make players more interested in finding good LS' (or whatever) in order to find easy groups and content. Really, it's smart imo, because guilds would tie in as the sure-fire way to find groups, trumping the waiting at zone entrances like old days... I just wonder if you can be part of multiple guilds this time around too. That would allow you to poach many chat lines for any chance of action.
Also it's obvious there are teleportation crystals all around, so travel time to the quest location is cut down immensely (at least if you've been there before, I assume).

while what you are saying is true (the whole its gunna play more like "modern games" what they ment in that quote was the actual time frame of the game, in which they ment it has more of a futuristic setting then FFXI, not by alot, but more technology like the small personal flying vehicals or citys having more steel and whatnot in them, though the game is VERY much still fantasy then anything else. For ther FF series its nothing new, SE tends to bounce back and forth alot, probly to make it less stale.
The devs have already confirmed magicite and magitek to be in the game (both taken from FF6). For those that don't know Magitek is basically mechanical technology powered by a condensed form of dead espers (summons). They've also confirmed a large number of enemies will be mechanical in nature.
I think we're going to see a reinvention of FFVI's story in FFXIV. The lore behind the evil empire that invaded Eorzea in the past states they are highly advanced beyond the playable races. On top of that the playable races seem to primarily use magic (such as using magicite crystals to teleport). This would also explain the importance of the summons in the storyline that the devs stated was the reason for not having a summoner class.
So the playable races won't use much of the technology themselves, but instead will mostly be fighting against it. At least for now anyway.
Oh, and first post!
(I lurk too much, hehe.)
Whaaaat? I don't get a battlesuit!? There go all my Robocop jokes...
