With the lack of information coming from Cryptic about the Klingon Faction in STO. I bet an annoucement will be made shortly after Xmas stating that the Klingon faction will NOT be available to play at launch but will be included in a free patch later on. Reason,  just not ready for release!

All the information Cryptic has given us has been about the Federation including 90% of the pictures and video footage. If there is a no Klingon Faction to play at release after supposedly a few hours of gaming and completing the tutorial. The STO Klingon fan base will label this game as a failure and it wont recover.

I hope the heck I'm wrong!

You know what? I would not be surprised in the least if that came to pass.

Lol the only diffrence is the klingons will be half arsed like Villans was at launch for COH. They arnt the focus, and will get pritty ships and silly heads and thats it.

If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude; greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.

Actually, City of Villains was way more developed than the Klingons are looking to be. At least Villains got its own tutorial zone.

I would argue that it's partly the immersion factor and partly the different play styles the devs want with the Klingon faction.

When I play City of Villains I am a villain. I'm not coming from Heroes, I don't have any contact with heroes unless I'm beating their asses in PvP.  But, with the way STO is set up now, a Klingon player has to start as their enemy before they can become what they really want to be. It won't really feel all that "Klingon" for those players.

Not only that, but what about the storyline? In City of Villains your villain starts the tutorial breaking out of prison! This is not only the exact type of thing a real villain would do, it also ties into the storyline of City of Villains. It's a great way to introduce someone to the game and that faction. With STO your Klingon will be assigned to a bird of prey after graduating from Starfleet Academy. What? That doesn't seem like anything a Klingon would do at all.

Cryptic is half assing the Klingon faction and half assing this entire game.

  • levin70levin70 Member Posts: 87

I'd take it a step further and say that the entire game won't be ready for the Feb 2 release.

It's nothing more than a train wreck at this point.

Expansion! I'd just like  to see so more updated information on the Klingon faction. IMHO Cryptic must be in bed with Funcom or should I say "Failcom". Yet some will say "no news is good news" yet in this case no news usually means content not ready.

    I hope I'm wrong!

That's pretty rude... and I can be that way too when speaking about a subject where I know I'm right.  Alas when speaking of STO that just makes you a dumbass, this game is pure failure in the eyes of anyone with common sense.  Hm lets see... we have Star Trek here and we are getting what?

    1.  theme park space shooter

    2. Only two factions out of the how many throughout the series? (yes I know they are adding in later... but common that's a huge chunk to just "add in")

    3. Everyone is a captain? you're joking right? I don't recall there being thousands and thousands of ships in ST, the only thing I see somewhat right in this game would be fleet battles... and even they'll be balls since the universe is only 2.5 D and not 3D.

ST deserves to be a huge sandbox game much like EVE, not the shit they are doing to the already suffering series...

I know. no big deal.  I just see people throwing "Trekkie" around in here as an insult as if being a Trekkie is any less geeky than being a member of this website is.  I just figured I would put everyone back in their place where they belong. :)

I agree with you.  I think Star Trek is an awesome IP, even if I am not a die hard fan of it.  This game has been a trainwreck since the original developers lost it.  Too bad. The ST Universe could make such a rich game universe.

Honestly I don'tt hink we'll really have a problem here.

They've indicated that you have to go through the tutorial with a federation character, and then after that you can make a klingon. I would think most people would be okay with this, because really the tutorial is gonna just be about teaching you how to play the game. Most people would really rather only go through the tutorial once anyways.

As far as them being in for launch, well i think they've promised it so much they can't really leave it out. It would be like WoW leaving out the Horde at launch. Granted I would like to see more information coming out about them, but I understand cryptic are pretty busy. They've set themselves an incredibly fast (I would say too fast) pace for the game, but it's up to them to deliver.

Considering that they've got klingons as enemies (apparently) in the game already, and presumably they have most of the starfleet stuff fleshed out, I imagine it wouldn't be that hard to stick in the klingons and get them filled in.

The point isn't whether or not one of the "sides" will be fully playable at launch, or not.

The point is that there are ONLY two playable "sides" from an IP where there could/should be many more.

Of course Cryptic (also know as Craptic) is going to get a lot of heat, from fans of a long running IP, when they are not doing it justice, in the eyes of many "normal" fans, let alone the fanatics.

This is not the IP to do another shallow, level based, linear, cash shop, gear grind with.

At least, not without getting a ton of flak.

Actually for the purposes of this thread, the point really was whether the klingons will be playable at launch.

Sure, they could add the romulans, dominion, borg, etc etc as playable factions, but that would take a lot more time/money/effort. Would you rather they put off the game another two years and possibly run out of resources like Perpetual did?

The thing is, Star Trek has always been about the Federation first. Frankly they could have gotten away with only starfleet being playable, but they decided to put the klingons in because it made more sense with where they were taking the IP. Not only that, but they have said romulans/borg/etc are possibilities with an expansion.

With the dominion war being more or less over (iirc), the romulans being basically devastated, and the klingons taking a more isolationist outlook, the fate of the alpha quadrant is really being decided mostly by these two power player faction, along with the borg looming in the darkness.

You should really read the Path to 2049 articles, they might provide a bit of insight into why they're having just the Feds and Klinks to start off with.

I've read that Atari wants Cryptic to follow WoW's lead and to try to release one expansion a year for all their games. I wouldn't be surprised to see a Romulan faction in the game in a year and a half. That is, assuming this game doesn't crash and burn.

I'll never get the fascination with Twilight but to each her own.

I'm actually suprised that some people thought Klingons wouldn't be playable at launch when it has been state many times that the two playable factions were Federation and Klingons. Some folks either don't pay attention to what is going on or just choose to ignore the obvious because they want reasons to bash the game.
